The 2019 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards
The Anisfield-Wolf Awards recognize books that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and human diversity. For 84 years, the distinguished books earning Anisfield-Wolf prizes have opened and challenged our minds. Cleveland poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield Wolf established the book awards in 1935, in honor of her father, John Anisfield, and husband, Eugene Wolf, to reflect her family’s passion for social justice. Presented by the Cleveland Foundation, it remains the only American book prize focusing on works that address racism and diversity.
The awards ceremony was held on Thursday, September 26, 2019, in the KeyBank State Theatre of Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.

Newsboys United Tour | Part 1
At the last minute my dad and my friend Heather both cancelled on me so luckily Chloe went. (Even though she’s not as religious as I am). But I had lots of fun and it was awesome to hear all the old and new songs from the Newsboys. I seriously recommend seeing them sometime! And because they sang 29 songs all together I split the concert into two parts.
Part 1: New Newsboys
Part2: Old Newsboys

Mr. J. Lynn Thompson, Director of Orchestral Studies
Please visit Christopher Newport University's Music Department:
J. Lynn Thompson's successful career in music and theatre includes more than 35 years as conductor, artistic leader, recording artist, performer and educator. He spent 27 seasons with Atlanta Lyric Theatre, a company he assisted in founding in 1980 where he served as Music Director/Conductor for 27 years and as Artistic Director for 17 years. Thompson was honored with the title Artistic Director Emeritus in 2007. A native of North Carolina and raised in Tennessee, Thompson came to Atlanta at the invitation of the late Robert Shaw, long-time conductor of the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus. Hired as a featured soloist for Shaw's production of Leonard Bernstein's Mass in 1976, Thompson's career blossomed under the care and tutelage of Shaw and others in the national orchestral, music theatre and light opera worlds. Thompson just completed his 27th season as Music Director with The Ohio Light Opera (OLO). With the OLO he has led over 1,100 performances of more than 90 different productions, including three world premieres, several American premieres and the complete works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Additionally, Thompson and the OLO have to their credit 18 full-length recordings of their productions -- many first-time recordings -- on the Newport Classic and Albany Records labels. In 1975, Thompson founded the orchestral studies program at the nationally recognized North Atlanta School of the Arts - The Atlanta Public Schools in Atlanta, Georgia. During his 26 years at the school, he developed one of the state's top programs, wrote and implemented most of the curriculum including Music History, Music Theory, AP Music Theory and Electronic Music. During Thompson's tenure, he also developed and implemented several after- school programs including a scholarship program for students to study with members of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and a tutorial program for area elementary school children to attend the school and work with high school students. Thompson and his students performed frequently on tour in the United States and in Europe and appeared in a special edition of 20/20 with Diane Sawyer. In addition to his work at North Atlanta, Thompson founded The Lyric Academy in association with Atlanta Lyric Theatre. The Academy recruited children of elementary school age from across school systems in the Atlanta area, and provided a unique experience by teaching music theatre skills through performance practice. Thompson developed a scholarship program -- privately funded -- to assist with the financial needs of some of the students so the program could engage the most talented children regardless of their socio-economic position. In 2002, Thompson was named a Lexus Leader of the Arts.
Students under his instruction have gone on to outstanding institutions such as The Juilliard School, Indiana School of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Oberlin, Northwestern, Florida State and the Curtis Institute. Many such as Jasmine Guy, Andres Diaz, Carmen Thomas, and Joseph Wise have achieved stardom and others boast careers as international solo artists, Metropolitan Opera performers, and as members of the New World Symphony, the Houston Symphony and the Atlanta Symphony. Thompson attended the University of Tennessee, graduated from Georgia State University -- receiving his undergraduate degree in Music Education and Masters in Orchestral Conducting and has studied with Robert Shaw, Robert Ward, Donald Neuen and Samuel Jones. He was under the tutelage of Pat Hardy during her tenure at the Juilliard School, and participated in the Conductor's Institute at the University of South Carolina. In 2007, Thompson, stepped down as Artistic Director for Atlanta Lyric Theatre and moved to Birmingham, Alabama to be with his wife Adelia, who accepted the position of Vice President for Advancement at Birmingham Southern College(BSC). While in the Birmingham area, he conducted the 80th Anniversary Gala Performance at Virginia Samford Theatre, and the opera productions of Gianni Schicchi and The Cabildo at Samford University. As an adjunct professor at Birmingham-Southern College he served as music director for The Consul, West Side Story, and Hair. In 2009, Thompson was appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Birmingham-Southern College as director of the string and wind ensemble. In 2012 Mr. Thompson joined the music faculty at Christopher Newport University where he is the director of the university orchestra and music director/conductor for Opera CNU and Theatre CNU productions.

Roaring 20s: Gus C. Edwards Orch. - Alabama Stomp, 1926
Gus C. Edwards & His Orchestra (A Benson Organisation) Vocal Refrain by Cliff Covert -- Alabama Stomp, Fox Trot (Henry Creamer -- Jimmy Johnson) Victor 1926 (USA)
NOTE: Gus C. EDWARDS (born Gustaw Simon, 1879 in Inowrocław, Poland -- d. 1945 in NYC) American songwriter and vaudevillian, owner of theatre companies and music publisher. When he was seven, his family moved to the United States, ending up in Brooklyn. During the day, he worked in the family cigar store, and in the evenings, he wandered looking for any sort of show business job. He found work as a singer at various lodge halls, on ferry boat lounges and in the saloons until he was employed at Bowery Theatre. His duty, however, was not singing but standing in the audience, and pretending to be completely overcome by the numbers, which were presented on the stage. In age of 17, Gus Edwards made his first stage appearing at Johnny Palmer's Gaiety Saloon in Brooklyn, after which he was contracted with four other boys to tour as The Newsboys Quintett. It's when he wrote his first song, to a lyric by Tom Daly, All I Want is My Black Baby Back. May Irwin sang the song in her act, and helped to popularize it. Soon, with the lyricist Will Cobb, Gus Edwards formed a parthership, that lasted for many years. He also performed as vaudeville singer, and later, he founded his own vaudeville company. He discovered Elsie Janis, Eddie Cantor, the Marx Brothers, Eleanor Powell, Hildegarde, the Lane Sisters and Ina Ray Hutton. He wrote the Broadway stage scores for When We Were Forty-One, Hip Hip Hooray, The Merry-Go-Round, School Days, Ziegfeld Follies of 1910. In the 1920s he founded the Gus Edwards Music Hall in New York, and also his own publishing company. His other popular-song compositions include By the Light of the Silvery Moon, I'll Be With You When the Roses Bloom Again, He's My Pal, Way Down Yonder in the Cornfield, In My Merry Oldsmobile. He also wrote all the music for The Hollywood Revue of 1929, with the exception of Singin' in the Rain. Bing Crosby played Edwards in a fictionalized version of his life in the 1939 film The Star Maker.
I never found any confirmation of Gus C.Edwards as professional leader of any sort of a dance orchestra. This very professional rendition of the very hot jazzy fox-trot, made by Gus C. Edwards Orchestra - member of some mysterious Benson Organization, had been recorded, as it seems, by famous Benson Orchestra of Chicago and Gus C. Edwards, perhaps, was invited to be a guest director of it (or, he co-directed the band).

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
