I know when you think of cool places to visit Little Rock may not be the first place that comes to mind but honestly if you live anywhere in the area or are an outdoor enthusiast it should be.

Little Rock, Arkansas sits on the banks of the Arkansas River located in the center of the state. And with a population of nearly 200,000 people, it's the largest city in Arkansas and definitely the place to find a good time at a great value.

Go actually find the “Little rock” little rock is named after. This can be found in La Petite Roche Plaza in Riverfront Park on the Arkansas River. Such a great place for kids to explore with a park that incorporates its surroundings into the playground and sights that will put a smile on everyone's face. (Free)

The arts flourish in Little Rock, Arkansas with the gallery at the Arkansas Arts Center, offering free admission and housing one of the most-acclaimed collections of works on paper in the country. (Free)

The Big Dam Bridge spans the Arkansas River and Murray Lock and Dam between Little Rock and North Little Rock and is open only to pedestrian and bicycle traffic, which is awesome if you love getting away from traffic like we do.. At 4,226 feet in length it is the longest pedestrian/bicycle bridge in North America that has never been used by trains or motor vehicles. (Free)

MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. Located in the historic Tower Building of the Little Rock Arsenal--the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur--the museum preserves the contributions of Arkansas men and women who served in the armed forces. Exhibits feature artifacts, photographs, weapons, documents, uniforms and other military items that vividly portray Arkansas's military history at home and abroad. (Free)

Museum of Discovery, not free, Adults $10, children $8. The museum has many fun, hands-on exhibits with a focus on STEM learning. They have the one of the world's largest bi-polar Tesla coils, a tornado ally experience and hands-on looks at geology, anatomy, and math. It's a great museum for kids and adults. We had one extremely rainy day in Little Rock so we were very grateful for the museum of discovery at that time.

Pinnacle Mountain is also supposed to be an pretty neat experience but on our personal trip we opted for the Big Dam Bridge instead due to wanting to drive less and children’s nap times.

1819-1836: A History of Territorial Arkansas Symposium

This Arkansas State Archives symposium, “1819-1836: A History of Territorial Arkansas,” took place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 26th, 2019, at MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History in Little Rock.

Speakers include Dr. Charles Bolton, history professor emeritus at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, presenting “Federal Aid and the Infrastructure of Arkansas Territory;” local author and historian Gary Pinkerton, who discusses Trammel’s Trace; Callie Williams, education outreach coordinator with the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, highlights Territorial era buildings; and Theo Witsell, chief of research and inventory of the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, discusses Thomas Nuttall’s exploration of Arkansas.

The symposium is among several events the Arkansas State Archives presented for National Archives Month 2019.

Arkansas Archives Month is meant to celebrate and raise awareness of the work archives and archivists do in preserving and making accessible Arkansas historical records and artifacts.

Episode 35, Russellville Writer, Bernie Babcock, is part of a made-for-radio series presented by Secretary of State Mark Martin. This episode reminds us of a very influential author and cultural visionary who grew up in Russellville.

In 1903, Julia Burnelle (Bernie) Smade Babcock published more than forty novels, as well as numerous tracts and newspaper and magazine articles. She became one of the country's leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln, writing five books on the tragic president. With a love of nature and history, she strived to build up the state's cultural treasurers, founding the Museum of Natural History in Little Rock, which is now the Museum of Discovery. She also was instrumental in renaming Little Rock's city park for General Douglas MacArthur.

Its name is of Siouan derivation from the language of the Osage denoting their related kin, the Quapaw Indians. The state's diverse geography ranges from the mountainous regions of the Ozark and the Ouachita Mountains, which make up the U.S. Interior Highlands, to the densely forested land in the south known as the Arkansas Timberlands, to the eastern lowlands along the Mississippi River and the Arkansas Delta.
Arkansas is the 29th largest by area and the 33rd most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state, a hub for transportation, business, culture, and government. The northwestern corner of the state, such as the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Metropolitan Area and Fort Smith metropolitan area, is a population, education, and economic center. The largest city in the state's eastern part is Jonesboro. The largest city in the state's southeastern part is Pine Bluff.
The Territory of Arkansas was admitted to the Union as the 25th state on June 15, 1836. In 1861, Arkansas withdrew from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. On returning to the Union in 1868, the state continued to suffer due to its earlier reliance on slavery and the plantation economy, causing the state to fall behind economically and socially. White rural interests continued to dominate the state's politics until the civil rights movement. Arkansas began to diversify its economy following World War II and relies on its service industry, aircraft, poultry, steel, tourism, cotton, and rice.
The culture of Arkansas is observable in museums, theaters, novels, television shows, restaurants, and athletic venues across the state. Arkansas's enduring image has earned the state a special place in the American consciousness. People such as politician and educational advocate William Fulbright; former President Bill Clinton who served as the 40th and 42nd Governor of Arkansas; his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; former NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark, Walmart magnate Sam Walton; singer-songwriters Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell; the poet C. Little Rock is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Arkansas. It is also the county seat of Pulaski County. It was incorporated on November 7, 1831, on the south bank of the Arkansas River close to the state's geographic center. The city derives its name from a rock formation along the river, named the Little Rock (French: La Petite Roche) by the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe in the 1720s. The capital of the Arkansas Territory was moved to Little Rock from Arkansas Post in 1821. The city's population was 198,541 in 2016 according to the United States Census Bureau. The six-county Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is ranked 78th in terms of population in the United States with 738,344 residents according to the 2017 estimate by the United States Census Bureau.Little Rock is a cultural, economic, government, and transportation center within Arkansas and the South. Several cultural institutions are in Little Rock, such as the Arkansas Arts Center, the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, in addition to the hiking, boating, and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Little Rock's history is available through history museums, historic districts or neighborhoods like the Quapaw Quarter, and historic sites such as Little Rock Central High School. The city is the headquarters of Dillard's, Windstream Communications, Acxiom, Stephens Inc., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Heifer International, the Clinton Foundation, and the Rose Law Firm.
