Scenic PeruRail Train Ride to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes)
We took a very scenic PeruRail train ride to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, which is the town closest to Machu Picchu. During the ride, we traveled over the rivers and through the foothills of the beautiful Andes mountains. On the way back, we saw a fashion show in our train car, along with a performance by a person dressed in a very strange costume.

Train Machu Picchu Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo Peru 3
How to Get to Machu Picchu from Cusco: Sacred Valley, Peru
If you think you can fly into Cusco and then easily get to Machu Picchu from there, you’re wrong. You have to take a bus and then a train to a small village at the base of Machu Picchu. This video shows you the journey from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, through the Sacred Valley to the basecamp for all visits to Machu Picchu.
**What's going on?**
I'm on a business trip with some friends from school. We're visiting a lot of companies and learning about business in Peru and all of Latin America. Between business visits, we're exploring and eating all the food. :)

**How to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu**
For even more details, read our blog post:
No matter how you go, you will travel through the Sacred Valley. It is gorgeous, so I highly recommend traveling during daylight hours so you can appreciate the beauty.
Option 1: Train only. $75-$115 USD, 3.5-4.5 hours
There is a train straight from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu), but it’s usually more expensive than the bus/train combo and less flexible, and the main train station they depart from is Poroy, a 30-minute taxi/uber ride from Cusco. Try to book a train from San Pedro station, which is only 8-minutes from Cusco.
Book your train ticket in advance:
Option 2: Bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu). $5 USD bus + $65 USD Train
Walk 10 minutes south from Plaza de Armas in Cusco to Pavitos street. On Google Maps, look for the “Estacion de colectivos.” It’s a yellow building that says “Real Inka” on it. The colectivos are minibuses and they leave as soon as they’re filled, which can be anywhere from 20-40 minutes between buses. Buses leave from 2:30am to 7pm and they’ll bring you straight to the train station in Ollantaytambo.
We recommend booking your train in advance and then planning backwards for when to get on the minibus in Cusco. The bus is always the same price, but the train tickets vary wildly, from $65 USD to $195 USD. Trains depart Ollantaytambo for Machu Picchu from 5:30am to 10pm.
Real Inka buses:
PeruRail:
Option 3: Private bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu). $140 USD (for 14 pax) for the bus + $65 USD train
This is what we did because we had a large group and we needed to stop at a few places to make the trip educational (hence the textile “factory” and the salt mines. You can book a private tour through Real Inka or any number of other tour companies.
Here are some time stamps:
Bus Trip (Cusco to Ollantaytambo)
0:23 – Chinchero textile stop
1:46 - Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras)
3:08 - Ollantaytambo
Train (Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu)
4:01 – Train through Sacred Valley
Aguas Calientes
4:55 – Arrival and room tour
5:17 – Exploring Aguas Calientes
5:48 – Plaza de Armas, Virgen del Carmen church
6:38 – Market

Three Miles High: Peru Rail Journey
From BBC Manchester Miles Kington Great Railway Journeys of the world 1980 from Lima to the High Andies via Punto Ferroviario, Huancato by steam to Hauncavelica by bus to Cuzco & Mactchu Picchu to Ayaviri
Should you hike Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu?
Hi Guys,
In this video we explore Machu PIcchu, Wayna Picchu and the Gran Caverna with it's moon temple.
We left Cusco the day before we planned on hiking Machu PIcchu. We took a 2 hour private taxi from Cusco to the train station. We then boarded the Inca Rail and spent another couple hours on the train before arriving in the Aguas Calientes. We spent the night in Aguas Calientes and planned on waking up at 4AM to get ready to take the first bus up the mountain.
We we're on the second bus and we're one of the first people to enter Machu PIcchu. We payed extra for premium tickets that would give us access to Wayna Picchu. These tickets are very popular and should be booked 4-6 month's in advance as there are only 400 of them available per day.
We entered Wayna Picchu at 7:30AM, this is when the trail opens up and if you are one of the first people to start the hi it's ideal as it's very difficult and you don't want to get stuck behind someone slow.
After a 2 hour hike up, we decided to extend our hike and visit the Gran Caverna and the moon temple. This extension is 2-3 hours depending on your speed and the weather. It's likely you can expect rain on this trail as you circle the wetside of the mountain. The views are spectacular and there is plenty of wildlife including parrots. We highly recommend taking this route back if you have the energy.
When we got back to the main fortress of machu Picchu there we're people everywhere. We did a quick tour through the ruins, took some photos and headed down the mountain by bus.

Beyond Machu Picchu. The Sacred Valley of Peru: Cuzco, Urubama, Ollantaytambo, Pisac.
Visitors of Machu Picchu often overlook the cute and charming historic villages in Sacred Valley. This vlog is about my visits to these villages.
I decided to spend my first night in a small village named Ollantaytambo because it would help reduce the high altitude sickness (compared to Cuzco, which is at a much higher elevation) and it's much more affordable in terms of lodging than Cuzco (Cusco). There are plenty of decent accommodations in Ollantaytambo. Also, catching a train to Agua Caliente (a town at the base of Machu Picchu) would be less expensive from here. This is particularly true if you use colectivo to travel from Cuzco to Ollantaytambo.
** CORRECTIONS to typos in the video: 1- Collectivo should be Colectivo.
2- Capella Lodge should be Capilla Lodge
Colectivo is a shared taxi that costs a fraction of regular taxi fare, especially for long distance. This is how the locals travel. There's no set schedule for departure. The colectivo would depart when the number of passengers reaches to a go-point (usually means when the vehicle reaches its capacity). The station for Cusco-Ollantaytambo is located at the corner of Calle Pavitos and Av Grau.
More travel tips...
1. If you want to save some money and know what you're doing, catch a taxi parked outside of the airport's parking lot, instead of ones that park along the curb right outside of the arrival gate.
2. Almost all hotels offer free cocoa tea (in dried leaves form). Take advantage of it. It may help your body to cope with the high altitude sickness. But remember not to overdo it because the high dose of this stuff is considered as 'narcotic' in the US, and thus, is illegal. So, don't even bother packing kilos of them home unless you want to get to know the DEA up close and personal.
3. Most motorcarros in Peru do not have smog control. That means air pollution can be a problem if you are sensitive to exhaust fumes. Pack a breathing mask (like ones used for bike riding) if you're uncomfortable to exhaust fumes.
4. Ollantaytambo's power often goes down when it rains in the evening for a short duration (about 20 minutes or so). Carrying a flashlight (one on your smart phone would do) could save you some hassles. During the power failure, which happens frequently, ATM machines in town would also quit working.
5. I found independent travel to be the best way to see more of the Sacred Valley. Group tours don't work for me. You can hire a taxi from Cuzco's main square for about US$30 for the day. That includes the driver and the vehicle itself. You can go anywhere that's the drive agrees to take you in or outside of Cuzco. Note: Quoted price is for the date of own travel.
6. From Ollantaytambo you can catch a train to Agua Caliente. This is the train terminal for Machu Picchu. To get to Machu Picchu, you'll have to purchase a separate bus ticket. Staying overnight in Agua Caliente is recommended if you don't want to rush your visit to Machu Picchu. There's a French bakery named La Boulangerie de Paris, located near the Agua Caliente train station that serves great French pastries. They open quite early in the morning. It's owned by a French lady who lives up to the great tradition of French bakery!
Bon Voyage!

PERU: ULTIMATE San Pedro Market + STREET FOOD Tour in Cusco | Peru 2019 Vlog
San Pedro Market in Cusco, Peru as some of the best street food, groceries and incredible gifts. #Cusco #Peru #PeruvianFood #streetfood
The San Pedro Market in Cusco, Peru is very close to Plaza De Armas. It's about a 10 minute walk.
Peru is know for having some of the world’s great cuisines, and we were so excited have a chance to visit Peru to learn about and taste the food. In this video, get ready for an ultimate tour of San Pedro Market and all her glory ..including her street food.
Here’s everything included in this tour:
*** I mispronounced the fruit smoothie I had it's not Lume it's Lúcuma, or in Quechua Lucma which is a native Andean fruit, with a flavor that is deep and reminiscent of meat or some say sweet potato like, while still sweet and fruity. Peruvian government has named it a signature fruit of Peru.
San Pedro Market - If you love vegetable markets, I don’t think anywhere else in Cusco is as colorful, energetic, and vibrant. This place is unreal we fully enjoyed walking around and seeing the diversity of ingredients from around Peru all in one busy wholesale Market.
Breakfast and Coffee - We can't remember the name of the shop but there's a section specifically for breakfast and coffee. Just ask for the cream sandwich made from the milk. They'll know what you're talking about.
Smoothies - There is a section dedicated to smoothies. Many stands worked by women who will basically shake a menu in your face to get you to order from their stand which all had numbers in front.. It's pretty incredible how this is done. The smoothie I had was made with the Amazon fruit called Lucma, con leche. Dave had a mango and passion fruit smoothie. Both extremely fresh tasting and delicious. Highly recommended.
Ceviche- This is one of the most common of all Peru street food. Ceviche is caught daily and should always be consumed by early afternoon. We were impressed with how fresh tasting the fish was. We didn't have ceviche at the San Pedro Market but a place called Cevicheria & Tiburoncito was pretty busy so we're assuming it's good.
Caldos de Gallina
The chicken soup they served here was huge. They put all kinds of tasty ingredients and spices along with the chicken and sometimes they even serve that chicken with the feet. So if you don't want to see chicken feet in your soup then go ahead and tell them when you place your order that you don't want the feet. Maybe you like the feet. We don't.
Textiles - There are so many stations of textiles for you to chose. Don't be afraid to negotiate on the prices. They shops all start their prices high, especially if they know you're a gringo. So definitely do some negotiating. They totally expect that.
In this video we'll give you some great tips and advice if you and/or family plan to visit San Pedro Market.

The Machu Picchu Railway, Peru 1997
In 1997 I had the opportunity to visit the famous Machu Picchu in Peru.
To get there I went via the city of Cuzco by air. From Cuzco there was a 3' narrow gauge railway to Mach Picchu. At the time of my visit on October 14th of 1997 the railway was still operating passenger trains from the central station in Cuzco. The climb out of Cuzco was spectacular with our train having to negotiate a steep climb into the surrounding hillside, by means of a series of switchback turns known locally as the zig zag.
Today tourist take a 20 min drive to pick up the train at Poroy and avoide the zig zag.
The train next stops at Poroy before descending into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The railway then follows the Urubamba river along the Gorge by the same name.
The final stop was Aguas Calientes (hot waters) which is only two km from Machu Picchu. The last two Km is done by mini bus to the summit.
I was very impressed with Peru, it's people, it's music (check out the sound track, I bought the music - a cassette- from a local band at a live performance) the hospitality, the accommodation and of course the Railway.
The railway was very busy and seemed to be the lifeline of the community. At the time of my visit, there was a new railway station under construction at Aguas Calientes. A very short clip of this is to be seen at the end. Today this station is in full use providing the arriving tourist with much improved comfort and convenience.
For the railway enthusiast and just about every one else, Machu Picchu is well worth a visit.

Machupicchu Cusco Peru - Trip from the United States - Travel to Peru American
Hello, my name is Jeffrey Reed. I came to Cusco in Peru from the United States and I think Cusco is a very cultural and rich place. I think the most important message is that there is more to Cusco than Machupicchu. I think that most people find out about Cusco when they make their travel plans to visit Machupicchu and I think that it is a shame! More people need to learn about just coming to Cusco and Scheduling tours in 360 degrees; all around the city of Cusco there's something interesting to do something different, a different aspect of traditional culture. Tipón is one that comes to mind which is the ancient water temple, there are just so many beautiful things to do here and the culture is alive and well the traditional culture; it goes back thousands and thousands of years, it is very strong here in Cusco and different parts of Peru generally. I am very happy to be part of it and to have known this area and you have to come here to understand it!

Cusco - Machu Picchu - Highlights of Peru
Cusco is 3,400 meters above sea level in the Andes and a beautiful city, but also the starting point for visits to the world famous ruins of Machu Picchu. Arriving at these altitudes, nearly everybody feels mild to severe symptoms of the altitude sickness.
The Coca-products cannot be missed in Cusco. But contrary to all expectations, the tea, biscuits or chocolate don’t have a noticeable intoxicating effect.
Around Cusco there are many Inca ruins and beautiful viewpoints.
From the Estación Poroy outside of Cusco, it goes slowly by train from 3,486 meters above sea level down to 2,038 meters along the Urubamba River to the town Aguas Calientes, the starting point of the visits of the ruins of Machu Picchu. The railway track begins in the open plateau and goes deeper and deeper into the canyon of the Río Urubamba.
Starting point for the multi-day hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a suspension bridge over the Rio Urubamba.
Aguas Calientes with its big tourist market is the base camp for tourist trips to Machu Picchu in the mountains above the city.
From Aguas Calientes, the buses go on an unpaved winding road up to Machu Picchu. And there it is, the world famous and impressive city of Machu Picchu.
Aguas Calientes and Train back to Cusco
After walking around Machu Picchu for one last time I head back down to Aguas Calientes to look around the Market and catch my train back. The train ride lasts for 1.20 hours then I get a minibus for another 2.20 hours back to Cusco. I check back into the Sol Plaza Inn Hotel and get an early nights sleep.
