The Lost City of Machu Picchu is a mysterious wonder; the Incas built there a city of stone, without the aid of wheels or iron tools. ... They built more than 600 terraces to prevent the city from sliding down the mountain. They designed a water supply system with a length of about 1 km.

For the Incas the architecture was especially important. The temples which were built around the city are oriented to catch the rays of the rising sun. The slopes of the roofs reflect the Huayna Picchu, the mountain that emerges after them. However, Machu Picchu has kept its secrets well, hiding for over 400 years its true meaning and purpose.

Apparently Machu Picchu was divided into three main areas: the residential area, with the home of the wise men or amautas, trapezoidal rooms occupied by ñustas or princesses and the popular and sacred neighborhood. The sacred neighborhood was dedicated to his principal deity Inti, Sun God; is in this area where are the main jewels of Intiwatana, the Temple of the Sun and the Room of the Three Windows.
More than 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu is the most visited tourist destination in Peru. A symbol of the Incan Empire and built around 1450AD, Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Peru Travel Advisory - How To Avoid Peru Fake Travel Agency
The Peru Travel Advisory warns fake travel agency online and offline, this is one of the most common travel scams, especially when hot destinations (Machu Picchu, Cusco, Amazon) are on everybody's mind. Tricksters create great websites for “new” travel agencies offering amazing deals. Wouldn’t you like to brag to your friends that you went to the 7th wonder Machu Picchu for $350?
The scammers, usually using amazing pictures stolen from the Internet to promote their destinations, create fake travel agencies for a month at a time, get hundreds of avid tourists who pay on the spot, and then close down the business, another way is to capture new clients at the airport terminal and bus terminals.

Websites are created in such a high quality that is really hard to differentiate a real business than a shady one. The scammers then proceed to buy a bunch of Google AdWords or Facebook ads and close deals on spot. After a month of work 'in', they collect, shuts down the website, and create a new one. And the show goes on.
In a different variation of the scam, criminals create duplicate websites of real travel agencies. They use legitimate logos and offer amazing travel deals, luring the victims into filling out an application with their personal information, including credit card numbers which are charged right away.
In another variation criminals meet you at the airport or any local office you are offered incredible savings for a service, then you are given a low or different service and sometimes no service.
How to avoid: Before you book your next holiday vacation to Peru, search on-line for the name of the provider and submit it to PERUCS (Peru Customer Service). Use PERUCS recommendations from our local travel inspectors. Feel free to share your bad experiences and submit the names of the scammers, in the 'Comments' section.

Machu Picchu-Peru, A Peruvian Historical Sanctuary.
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on a mountain ridge 2,430 meters (7,970 ft.) above sea level. It is located in the Cusco Region, Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District in Peru above the Sacred Valley, which is 80 kilometers (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows.
Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacutec (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the Lost City of the Incas (a title more accurately applied to Vilcabamba), it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish invasion. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Inti Watana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of how they originally appeared. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored and restoration continues.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, both cultural and natural. Since its discovery in 1911, growing numbers of tourists visit the site yearly, reaching 400,000 in 2000. As Peru's most visited tourist attraction and major revenue generator, it is continually exposed to economic and commercial forces. In the late 1990s, the Peruvian government granted concessions to allow the construction of a cable car and a luxury hotel, including a tourist complex with boutiques and restaurants and a bridge to the site. Many people protested the plans, including Peruvians and foreign scientists, saying that more visitors would pose a physical burden on the ruins. A no-fly zone exists above the area. UNESCO is considering putting Machu Picchu on its List of World Heritage in Danger.
During the 1980s a large rock from Machu Picchu's central plaza was moved to a different location to create a helicopter landing zone. In the 1990s, the government prohibited helicopter landings. In 2006, a Cusco-based company, Helicusco, sought approval for tourist flights over Machu Picchu. The resulting license was soon rescinded.
Authorities have struggled to maintain tourist safety. Tourist deaths have been linked to altitude sickness, floods and hiking accidents. UNESCO received criticism for allowing tourists at the location given high risks of landslides, earthquakes and injury due to decaying structures.
Nude tourism is a recent trend, to the dismay of Peruvian officials. In several incidents, tourists were detained for posing for nude pictures or streaking across the site. Peru's Ministry of Culture denounced these acts for threatening Peru's cultural heritage. Cusco's Regional Director of Culture increased surveillance to end the practice
15 Things to do in Cusco Travel Guide
Many travelers to Cusco use the city as a launching pad to hike the Inca trail, visit Machu Picchu and/or explore the Sacred Valley. With so many travel options just outside of the city it is easy to forget that Cuzco has a lot to offer in and of itself. The following Cusco travel guide is our attempt to showcase what the city has to offer in terms of attractions, things to do, shopping, dining, museums and nightlife. In our opinion, you'll want to budget several days to take it all in and acclimatize to the higher altitude if you're thinking of going on hiking excursions afterwards.
Our visit Cusco travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Cusco city guide.

15 Things to do in Cusco, Peru | Top Attractions Travel Guide:
If you're planning to walk the Inca Trail or visit Machu Picchu, you'll likely end up spending at least a few days in Cuzco. With it's lively square, quirky museums, artisans markets and traditional performances, this is exactly the type of destination you'll want to linger in...plus let's not forget, it's also a good place to adjust to the altitude! The following video will showcase 15 things to do in Cuzco:
Cuzco Cathedral is a place you shouldn't miss. The cathedral sits on the site of Viracocha Inca’s palace, and it was also built using blocks from the nearby Inca site of Sacsaywamán. Inside you'll find impressive works of art done in the cuzqueña style.
In the evenings, you can go watch a traditional dance performance at Centro Qosqo.
San Blas
San Blas is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Cuzco and it is a great area to explore on foot. The neighbourhood is known for its bright blue doors and window shutters, and it has a nice little square with a church and a water fountain. The neighbourhood has some really cool lookout points with great panoramic views of Cuzco, so you'll want to bring your camera.
Plaza de Armas is the beating heart of Cuzco. The square is flanked by a Jesuit church and cathedral, and there are also plenty of bars, restaurants, and tour agencies around the perimeter. During the day you'll find locals and tourists hanging out in the square, and if you get lucky, you might just encounter a performance followed by a demonstration like we did.
The Inca Museum is one of the main museums in town and it has rooms dedicated to different periods of Inca and Spanish history. You can also see women weaving rugs and tapestries by hand in the central courtyard.
Qurikancha was an Inca temple built to the Sun God, Inti, and it is believed that the walls of this temple were once covered in sheets of gold. If the temple looks like it has various layers of construction, that's because when the Spaniards arrived, they demolished the original temple and used the foundations to build the Church of Santo Domingo on the site.
The Church of the Society of Jesus is a historic Jesuit church. It's worth a quick visit if you're in the area.
Templo de la Merced is another church located one block from Plaza de Armas, and it contains the tomb of two famous conquistadors.
And that's a wrap for Cuzco! We hope you enjoyed this video and that it showed you a few of the places you can visit while you're in the city. We recommend spending at least 3 days here, or perhaps a few more if you also want to tour the Sacred Valley. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do in Cuzco, feel free to share those in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano. The best of Comida Peruana and Cocina Peruana.

Machu Picchu is among 21 finalists vying to become one of the new must-see wonders. The campaign is hosted by a Swiss foundation led by filmmaker Bernard Weber.
Some of the other candidates include the Acropolis in Greece, the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, among others.
We are looking to collaborate with all Peruvians so that this could be a joint effort in achieving what all Peruvians want. We want Machu Picchu to be one of the wonders of the world, said Oscar Lozan a Lima city council member.
A voter said having voting stations in the city centre made it very convenient to vote as she too wanted Machu Picchu to be one of the seven wonders.

The Incas ruled Peru from the 1430s until the arrival of the Spaniards in 1532, constructing incredible stone-block cities and roads and developing a highly organised society that extended from modern-day Colombia to Chile.
Cuzco, 315 miles (505 kilometres) southeast of the Peruvian capital, Lima, in the southern Andes, was the seat of the Inca empire that ruled Peru.
The new seven wonders of the world will be announced in Lisbon, Portugal on July 7, 2007 or - 07.07.07.
