Food in the Garden 2014: The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes region was integral to the War of 1812, a front for several naval and land conflicts such as the assaults on Ft. Meigs and the Battle of Put-in-Bay. Once referred to as the Eden of the West, the Great Lakes region included hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness, rolling rivers, and dense forest encompassing modern day New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. The region was home to the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Iroquois tribes, who valued the waterways as a means of life. With the increasing demand for elbow room, European-Americans began to extend their reach westward into relatively unfamiliar territory with the hope of thriving off of abundant, fertile land. With them came exotic and—in some cases—invasive species never before seen in the region such as apples, peaches, swine, and other fare that would come to define the region. How did the introductions of new plant and animal species affect the cultural foodways of the people who lived there and continue to live in the region today?
200 years later, this region is the cultural center of the Midwest with over 32 million people living along the lakes. Although early settlements have come and gone, many heirloom seeds native to this region have stood the test of time and there is an ever-present effort to preserve them, not only for consumption but for their cultural significant as well.
Panelists: Jodi Branton, National Museum of American Indian; Rick Finch, interim director of the Glenn Miller Birth Place Museum and former site manager of Fort Meigs: Ohio’s War of 1812 Battleground; and Tim Rose, geologist at the National Museum of Natural History and cider maker with Distillery Lane.

Saginaw Michigan - Lefty Frizzell (with lyrics)
I was born in Saginaw, Michigan.
I grew up in a house on Saginaw Bay.
My dad was a poor hard working Saginaw fisherman:
Too many times he came home with too little pay.
I loved a girl in Saginaw, Michigan.
The daughter of a wealthy, wealthy man.
But he called me: That son of a Saginaw fisherman.
And not good enough to claim his daughter's hand.
Now I'm up here in Alaska looking around for gold.
Like a crazy fool I'm a digging in this frozen ground, so cold.
But with each new day I pray I'll strike it rich and then,
I'll go back home and claim my love in Saginaw, Michigan.
I wrote my love in Saginaw, Michigan.
I said: Honey, I'm a coming home, please wait for me.
And you can tell your dad, I'm coming back a richer man
I've hit the biggest strike in Klondyke history.
Her dad met me in Saginaw, Michigan.
He gave me a great big party with champagne.
Then he said: Son, you're wise, young ambitious man.
Will you sell your father-in-law your Klondyke claim?
Now he's up there in Alaska digging in the cold, cold ground.
The greedy fool is a looking for the gold I never found.
It serves him right and no-one here is missing him.
Least of all the newly-weds of Saginaw, Michigan.
We're the happiest man and wife in Saginaw, Michigan.
He's ashamed to show his face in Saginaw, Michigan.

Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are electronically generated noises that resemble speech, but are supposedly not the result of intentional voice recordings or renderings. Common sources of EVP include static, stray radio transmissions, and background noise. Recordings of EVP are often created from background sound by increasing the gain (i.e. sensitivity) of the recording equipment.
In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. Descriptions of the apparition of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible wispy shapes, to realistic, life-like visions. The deliberate attempt to contact the spirit of a deceased person is known as necromancy, or in spiritism as a séance.
The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices—funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic—are specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted.
Ghost Hunting is the process of investigating locations that are reported to be haunted by ghosts. Typically, a ghost hunting team will attempt to collect evidence claimed to be supportive of paranormal activity. Ghost hunters often utilize a variety of electronic equipment, such as the following types: the EMF meter; digital thermometer; handheld and static digital video cameras, such as thermographic (or infrared) and night vision; digital audio recorder; and computer.
Traditional techniques such as conducting interviews and researching the history of a site are also employed. Some ghost hunters refer to themselves as a paranormal investigator.[1]
While many groups claim to utilize scientific methods in their search for the ghosts, no scientific body has been able to confirm the existence of ghosts.[2][3] Ghost hunting can be classified as a pseudoscience.

A daredevil performed a heart stopping leap off the top of a 105-foot-high bridge.
Brave Dylan Balog clambered on top of the iron girders - the same height as the Tower of London - in Masontown, West Virginia, USA on August 16.
The experienced bridge jumper psyches himself up before throwing one of the stones into the river below.
Having launched his other three rocks to break the surface tension and give himself a landing spot to aim for, Dylan steps out and begins to plummet.

Choke Points: Global Water, Food and Energy Crises
GRCC, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan, presents Keith Schneider, Circle of Blue and Liz Kirkwood, FLOW (For Love of Water)
Water outlines Michigan’s geography and culture. And, with climate change and national water scarcity, it could define a much greater share of our economy. Mr. Schneider reports on the mega trends influencing global water supply and use. Demand for energy and food in an era of diminishing fresh water reserves has weakened national economies, destabilized governments, touched off civic rebellions, and put pressure on the world’s biggest financial institutions.
Executive Director of FLOW (a water law and policy center), and an environmental lawyer, Ms. Kirkwood highlights water, energy, and environmental governance issues. She was the leading force in shaping the “Oil & Water Don’t Mix” campaign to address the Line 5 pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.
Both hailing from Traverse City, our panelists illustrate the challenges posed by significant water risks here in Michigan and beyond.
