Tom & Tanya Walk the King's Levada Sao Jorge Madeira
We are in Madeira and when in Madeira if you enjoy a walking challenge you have to walk at least one of the famous levadas. If you have never experienced a levada walk it is probably best to go with one of the various walk tours. After this you will probably know what to expect and you may want to branch out on your own and use the local cheap and cheerful bus service to get around. This means you will be able to walk at your own pace and stop and start where and when you like. It does mean that if you get into difficulty you are on your own and you will missthe company and craic of doing the walk with folks from all over the world.
We walked with the Madeira Explorers Group. The provided us with a door to dood service hotel to levada and back. They also gave us a lady tour guide who filled us in about all the things we were looking at and a bit of history etc. Our guide was very good. I would very much recommend this company.
( Estrada Monumental 284 Centro Comercial Lido Lj. 24 1º Piso 9004-541 Funchal Portugal )
We chose to walk the King's Levada up in the north of the island in the Santana Sao Jorge region. The minibus ride there also gave us a chance to look at the Madeiran hinterland.
What in interesting day. We were well pleased with ourselves. The walk was around 11k and was rated as moderate difficulty but we found it quite easy. There were a number of narrow places that it looked straight down over high cliffs so safety is always paramount. I was very impressed by the 15th and 16th century feats of engineering that were behind the levada construction. Quite amazing for so many centuries ago without mechanical help etc
Levada is a Portuguese word derived from the word levar - which means to carry and is roughly translated as carriageway, but more correctly defined as mini-canal. The mini-canals are irrigation systems developed to distribute water from the rainfall heavy and wet regions on the north of Madeira island to the drier sun parched regions of the south. The water is usually stored in reservoirs or tanks, or captured directly from natural fountains to be redirected and channeled across a wide network of winding canals. These narrow water carriageways deliver precious water along far distances to banana plantations, vineyards, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens, as well as to hydro-electric power stations dotted around the island. The levadas criss cross the mountains and cover a total distance of 2500 km, and date back to as far as the early 16th century.
The Levada Walks are walking trails along the maintenance paths beside the Levadas. Although the Levadas were constructed primarily for agricultural/industrial use they are just as important for tourists and local people alike who want to enjoy outdoor adventure activities inaccessible by cars.

Madeira - levada walk
A walk along one of the most beautiful levadas of Madeira from Ribeiro Frio to Portela.
Along the footpath by the levada we will marvel at the display of light and shade filtering through the laurel and heather trees.
Near Lamaceiros, we enjoy the views over Porto da Cruz and Eagle's rock far below.
The Madeira Islands are an autonomous region of Portugal situated in the Atlantic oceans subtropical zone south of the Portoguese mainland, west of North Africa and north of the Canary Islands.
BEST OF MADEIRA - 7 days on an amazing island
New to Travelons? Don't forget to subscribe! :-)
This video is a summary of our BEST footage from our trip to Madeira. There are so many things to do on Madeira, but this is what we did during our travel.
We stayed at the amazing hotel Rocamar, east of Funchal (10 min drive). The FIRST day we did some snorkeling outside the hotel. The water was clear, plenty of fish and things to see under water. I even saw an octopus that said hello. See our video just from that experience:
Hotel Rocamar is perfect if you want to stay super close to the sea, with a fantastic view, beautiful sunrises and great service. We even saw dolphins and whales from the balcony of our room!
The SECOND day, we went to hike the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço. Really beautiful with friendly lizards along the way. Remember to bring sunscreen and light clothes - it can be very hot.
The THIRD day we went to Funchal, the capital of Madeira. We bought a combination ticket with the cable cars to the Botanical Garden Jardim Botanico. It costs around €30 per person, so it's quite expensive - but totally worth it. If you suffer from fear of heights, the cable cars can be a bit scary. The botanical garden is massive, with a lot of variation. The cacti were really cool.
Later the same day, we went to Cabo Griao - the highest cliffs in Europe! They have a glas skywalk you can walk out on - awesome! We also went to Ponta do Sol.
The FORTH day we went to the northern parts of Madeira. I did some snorkeling close to Ilheu da Ribeira da Janela - a beautiful cliff in the sea. The waves were quite big, so you should be carful going out here even if you have a lot of experience.
Further west we came to Porto Moniz. They have a really cool area with natural pools. You only pay 1.5€ per person to get in!
The FIFTH day we did some hiking along Levada do Caldeirão Verde (green waterfall). This was amazing! One of the most beautiful and different hikes we've done. It's 6.5km long (13 km back and forth) and the path can be very narrow sometime. Remember to bring a flashlight since there are several pitch black tunnels you have to go though (mind your head). The end of the hike takes you to a magnificent waterfall with crystal clear (but cold) water.
The SIXTH day we wanted to do some more hikning, but the weather was not good at Pico do Arieiro. We wanted to walk from Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. If you want to do the same, check the weather before going! Search for Pico do Arieiro webcam so the the conditions right now ;) We went back to the hotel, to do some more snorkeling and swimming at the hotel pool.
The SEVENTH and last day, I got a surfing lesson from Carlos in Seixal harbor. A black sandy beach with smaller waves - perfect for surf beginners. Even if you don't plan to surf, Seixal is really beautiful and they also have natural pools you can swim in.
We did some other stuff, like the volcanic grotto tour in Sao Vicente (which was great), but we decided to only show the best footage from of our trip to Madeira.
We will come back soon, 7 days is not enough ;) We hope you enjoyed watching our video. Give it a thumbs up, comment and subscribe for more awesome videos!
