The Atlantic Crossing #6: Taxi Tour in Funchal at Madeira Island
Crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise ship from Recife in Brazil to Lisbon in Portugal. First time in Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal!
Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. The city has a population of 100,526 and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Today Funchal is a major tourist town, with hotels, port, and an international airport Funchal Airport (FNC), located in the nearby municipality of Santa Cruz. Besides the city of Funchal, tourist destinations include: Ribeira Brava, Curral das Freiras, Porto Moniz, Santana, the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO Natural Site, in the center of Madeira Island and the beaches in Porto Santo island. There is also a passenger gondola lift (Funchal Passenger Ropeway), that transports people from the lower section of the city to the suburb of Monte.
The ship is the MV Bleu de France, owned by the Spanish company Pullmantur through its subsidiary Crossieres de France and in partnership with the Brazilian agency CVC. On this video, we pass by the city of Fortaleza.
The trip, also called the crossing, took 12 days. We departed from Recife, the main city in the Northeast coast of Brazil, with stops in Fortaleza (Brazil), Praia (Cabo Verde), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Ilhas Canarias, Spain) and Funchal (Ilha Madeira, Portugal), arriving early morning in Lisbon.
This Part 1 video only shows the night departure from Recife and following videos will show all the stops we made. Watch many videos of the Bleu de France cruise ship on youtube.com/diogok There is a video showing many areas inside the Bleu de France and others showing the beautiful places the ship has been during the last Brazilian summer season, like Recife, Fernando de Noronha, Natal, Fortaleza, Salvador and Maceio, before returning to Marseilles in France for the beginning of the European season. This is the last season for this ship as Bleu de France, as it was sold to the British company SAGA and soon will become Saga Sapphire.
The Republic of Cape Verde is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 kilometres off the coast of Western Africa. The Cabo Verde islands, covering a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi), are of volcanic origin and while three of them (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) are fairly flat, sandy and dry, the remaining ones are generally rockier and have more vegetation. Because of the infrequent occurrence of rainfall in Cabo Verde the overall landscape is not particularly green, despite what the country's name suggests (verde is Portuguese for green).
Madeira Airport To Funchal Transfers - Portugal
You can find out more information about airport transfers and the latest deals for 'Madeira Airport To Funchal Transfers' on our webiste:
Madeira Airport, is located just 21 kilometers, 13.5 miles, from Funchal itself. This makes transfers to and from the airport, very simple. There are several transfer options, available to passengers arriving, or departing from the airport in Madeira. One of the cheapest options, is the local bus service, that runs from the airport to Funchal. The bus number is 113, and runs at regular times throughout the day. The bus transfer time from Madeira Airport, to the center of Funchal, takes approximately 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on the bus, and the cost of a ticket is just a few euros.
Shuttle Buses
Shuttle buses, are another popular option with passengers, providing a convenient and viable option. Several companies provide shuttle bus services to and from the airport, and they all offer competitive prices. There are both shared, and private shuttles available. Obviously, the private shuttles are more expensive, but if there are several people travelling in your party, where the cost can be shared, then it is generally, quite a cost effective form of transport. The shuttle bus services, will meet you at the airport, and will then transfer you from the airport, to your hotel. They will then pick you up from your hotel and take you to the airport, on your day of departure.
Taxis
Taxis from the airport to Funchal, are one of the quickest, and most convenient forms of transport, but tend to be more expensive! Taxis are available from outside the airport throughout the day and night. If you intend taking a taxi when you arrive at the airport, It is advisable to ask the price, before you get in the taxi. Taxi fares are registered on the meter, but regardless of your destination, there is a minimal starting fee on weekdays, and an additional charge between the hours of 9pm, and 6am. This also applies all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and on holidays. Also Note, a small additional fee may be charged for luggage and animals. However, a very popular choice with passengers, is to pre book a taxi in advance. Pre booking your taxi in advance, eliminates all the stress, and worry, as your taxi fare will be paid in advance. Once again, if there are several people travelling, it can work out quite cost effective, if the cost is shared.
Car Hire
Car hire, provides a great form of transfer from the airport, with the added bonus of providing you with transport, for the duration of your stay. This means that you can explore the wonderful island of Madeira even more, at no extra cost, and you will have transport back to the airport, at the end of your visit!
Madeira (Portugal) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation travel video about destination Madeira in Portugal.
Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!

Madeira taxi tour with Carlos in November
Madeira taxi tour with Carlos in November. A whole day out with Carlos in his taxi around Madeira. Breathtaking views from Eira do Serrado over Nun's valley and a walk to Balcoes, Ribeiro Frio where birds will take food from your hand. Carlos speaks very good English and told us all he knew about the places we visited. He took us off the beaten track down quiet roads where wild fruits grow on the roadside. He even bought us some locally made chestnut cake. A fabulous day out!

Restored interesting old film of a visit to the capital of Madeira, Funshall by Holland America Line cruise passengers in 1926. Especially interesting are the taxi sledges drawn by oxes and the manually steared sledges that go down the hill back to Funshall (still in existence today!).
