New Exhibit in 2010 - Artistic Traditions of the Anishinaabe and Expanded Special Event July 23 to 25, Connecting Cultures: Exploring the Lake Superior Fur Trade. Experience more than 300 hundred years of Island life from Ojibwe culture to the fur trade, missionaries to loggers and boat building to fishing. 2010 Hours: Open daily, May 29 through October 2,10am to 5pm. Family/group rates. Museum Store features books, handmade jewelry, Ojibwe crafts and other unique gifts. Owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

The Big Top Singers ferry across the bay to Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands to help celebrate Independence Day on the Town Green at the Madeline Island Museum. Here they deliver the traditional rousing National Anthem of Madeline Island - Over to Old LaPointe - a song from the Big Top presentation: Riding The Wind - A Musical History of the Apostle Islands. The LaPointe Independence Day Celebration was ranked in the top 8 in America in 2010 in a Fox News Report.

La Pointe was originally the site of a fortified French trading post from 1693--1698, and 1718-1759. Moningwunakuaning is the spot on which the Ojibway tribe first grew, and like a tree it has spread its branches in every direction(WP). La Pointe on Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands.

Big Bay State Park - Madeline Island, Wisconsin
Located in Lake Superior just off Wisconsin's North Coast, Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Island Archipelago. It is 14 miles long and 3 miles wide and is the only one of the islands with commercial development. Big Bay State Park is located 7 miles from ferry dock and features a sand beach, picnic area and camping.

The owner of this vehicle is extremely fortunate. The Ice Road from Bayfield to La Pointe on Madeline Island, Wisconsin, is safe though we travel at our own risk. Traveling off of the Ice Road is much more dangerous, especially near ice ridges as seen where this vehicle went through.
