State theater opening magic trick
Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

Heinold's First and Last Chance, Oakland CA - Bucket List Bars
Find out about our new book at
Sitting prominently in Jack London Square on the Port of Oakland, is one of the oldest and most well preserved bars on the West Coast, and even in the whole country: Heinold's First and Last Chance.
This bar was opened by German transplant Johnny Heinold in 1883 and has been serving continuously ever since. It is most famous for helping to launch the career of one of America's most beloved authors, Jack London.
London practically grew up in this bar, and would frequent it from the age of 10 years old. He was befriended by the owner who bought him his first dictionary and even lent him money to attend the University of California.
This place could be a museum. It's full of artifacts and relics that reflect its 113 year history as a bar, including items from both world war and general California period history.
The best part about it though, is that it's still a bar--serving drinks to locals and tourists a like. It gets crowded. It can get rowdy. But it is definitely a place to put on your bucket list!

Crowd Sourcing Wildfire Detection | Graham Kent | TEDxUniversityofNevada
The ALERTWildfire network of early detection fire cameras has been successful in helping
fire fighters reduce response times to wildfires. In many cases, this response time can be reduced through public participation further by simply using the ALERTWildfire public web portal
to scan cameras, especially during red flag days when every minute counts. Battling the
“New Normal” requires innovative approaches to ensure that large destructive wildfires are rare and not commonplace.
Dr. Graham Kent is Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno. He attended San Diego State University, where he studied Geophysics and graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1985. Thereafter, he entered graduate school at Scripps Institution of Oceanography receiving his PhD in 1992. After a 4-year-long appointment at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Graham returned to Scripps to continue his work in geophysics, with an emphasis toward seismic studies, ranging from magma chambers beneath mid-ocean ridges to fault hazards and tsunami at Lake Tahoe. In 2009, Graham moved to Nevada, where he helped the lab move toward the Internet of Things (IOT) approach to rebuilding the seismic network, and more recently, leading the design and build out of the ALERTWildfire camera network. He is also involved with the Great Nevada ShakeOut earthquake drill and earthquake early warning in California, while setting the stage for adoption in Nevada. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
