BAGAN - A SUNNY DAY
This video sharing beautiful scenes of 4 different payas (Buddhist temples) in Bagan including Dhammayangyi (Bagan's largest temple) , Mahabodhi , Gawdawpalin (the second highest temple in Bagan) & Shwezigon (gold plated paya in 1090). This video features the sweet voice of Myanmar female singer, Ni Ni Khin Zaw in the song Nin Lo At Khae Yin.
After murdering his father (King Alaungsithu who built Shwegugyi) & brother, Narathu built the massive Dhammayangyi in 1170 to compensate for his crime.
Mahabodhi was built by King Htilominlo in 13th century, taking its both name and inspiration from the Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya (in North India) where the Buddha reached enlightenment some 25 centuries ago.
With a height of 55 meters the Gawdawpalin is the second tallest temple in Bagan after Thatbyinnyu with 60 meters high.
The Shwezigon Pagoda was built by King Anawrahta who founded the Bagan Kingdom in 1044. The holy tooth, collar bone & frontlet relics of Buddha were enshrined in this paya.

Bagan Travel Guide - Myanmar Unique Moments
Bagan is an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. Bagan, located on the banks of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River, is home to the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world with many dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The shape and construction of each building is highly significant in Buddhism with each component part taking on spiritual meaning.
Bagan became a central powerbase in the mid 9th century under King Anawratha, who unified Burma under Theravada Buddhism. It is estimated that as many as 13,000 temples and stupas once stood on this 42 sq km plain in central Myanmar, and Marco Polo once described Bagan as a gilded city alive with tinkling bells and the swishing sounds of monks' robes. Approximately 2,200 remain today, in various states of disrepair. Some are large and well maintained, such as the Ananda Pahto, others are small tumbledown relics in the middle of overgrown grass. All sites are considered sacred, so when visiting, be respectful including removing shoes as well as socks before entering or stepping onto them.
Bagan's golden age ended in 1287 when the Kingdom and its capital city was invaded and sacked by the Mongols. Its population was reduced to a village that remained amongst the ruins of the once larger city. In 1998, this village and its inhabitants were forcibly relocated a few kilometers to the south of Bagan, forming New Bagan where you will find accommodation in its handful of cheap, quaint, clean hotels and religious centers.
There are many places to eat in Old Bagan serving the traditional Burmese dishes, especially good old noodle soup. Some of the buffets are excellent; for about USD 4 you can eat to your heart's content from dozens of different traditional dishes. Most accommodation nowadays are found in New Bagan or Nyaung Oo. In Old Bagan, only some government-involved, luxury hotels remain. The most visited temples (but not necessarily the best) are located along the northern stretch of Nyaung Oo Rd. or at Nyaung Oo township and downwards before you arrive in Old Bagan. Don't forget that Bagan area and its 3000+ temples streches over a 20km x 20 km perimeter; if you really want to see and appreciate Bagan you'll need to rent a bike or a taxi or a horse cart, you can't do it on foot. Nyaung Oo town has the most budget accommodations.
You can take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise through 2 companies in Bagan one is called Balloons Over Bagan, around US$ 320 per person and the other is called Bagan Ballooning, US$ 350 per person with less people in the basket. The 2 companies operate from October till April.

23 Myanmar: Bus from Monywa to Bagan
We Said Go Travel October 9, 2012 To travel from Monwya to Bagan we took the 9am and arrived at 12:30pm. (Our day started with a 7:45am wake-up, and 8am breakfast, after that we were off to the bus station for the 9am bus to BAGAN!)
We had bought our tickets the day before with the AGB bus company. My favorite part was when they put a bicycle on top of the bus! At one stop, I jumped off for a quick toilet stop. I ran through a restaurant and into the mud construction pile of dirt.
We went on the NEW BRIDGE. You used to have to stop in Pokukkua and switch to boat for an additional 4 hours of travel time so it took 7-8 hours for the whole journey, but our time 3 ½ hours!
The bus stopped outside of Bagan, and each foreignor was charged $10usd for a pass for seven days in Bagan. Buy the map for 1000K ($1.25usd) it is a good map.
When we arrived in Nyang U, they said a horse cart takes only 2 for 3000K and claimed a taxi would be more. Turns out that Moritz found a taxi that would take all four of us for 2000K.
We had booked ahead at Winner Guesthouse and the owner was shocked to see us before 1pm. She said, What time was your bus? as she knew we were traveling from Monwya in the morning.
See all about Monwya Caves, Standing Buddha and Thanbuddhay Pagoda in our other movies. More about this day on wesaidgotravel.com

Po Win Taung , Monywa - HD
Phowintaung , also spelt as Hpowindaung, Powintaung, Po Win Taung) is a Buddhist cave complex located approximately 25 kilometers west of Monywa and 10 kilometers southeast of Yinmabin, in Yinmabin Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Region, Northern Burma (Myanmar). It is located on the western bank of the Chindwin River. The name of the complex means Mountain of Isolated Solitary Meditation
The hill, a soft volcanic rock, It's a huge, multi-level Buddhist religious complex with about 800 rock-cut caves, which vary from a simple meditation cell to an imposing temple. The facades are decorated in low and high reliefs, with some entrances flanked by human or animal sculptures in the round. The interiors of the grottoes contain numerous statues carved into the rock and over 100 caves are adorned with mural paintings illustrating traditional scenes (the 28 Buddha of the Past, previous lives of Buddha, and the Life of Buddha Gotama) including scenes of daily life. For the most part, the creations of Po Win Taung date from the second Ava period (16th - 18th centuries), and to a lesser extent, to the colonial period (last quarter of 19th till mid 20th centuries).
This work defines the characteristics of the « Nyaung Yan » style, generally designated as the « Ava » style, a period which is little known to the oriental art world. The artistic treasures of Po Win Taung allow us to explore and comprehend this style to a much greater extent. They show a profound syncretism harmonizing local pre-buddhist beliefs and the fundamental teachings of Theravâda Buddhism as well as the different sources of inspiration
Myanmar travel: Sagaing–Monywa–Mount Popa
Next part of my photographic journey through Myanmar:
The first stop at Sagaing Hills, the ancient site of Sagaing. Then along an agricultural area to Monywa with the nearby giant 116 m buddha statue, the second tallest in the world, the famous Thanboddhay Pagoda and the Po Win Daung Caves. Another boat trip was necessary to reach famous Mount Papa, the home of the Nats, the Burmese ghosts.
Pyay, Myanmar
Video with images of Sri Ksetra an ancient capital of the Pyu kingdom near modern Pyay in a sharp bend of the Ayeyarwady River. The area was inhabited in the second century AD by the first Pyu settlers. Between the fifth and the ninth century the Pyu kings in Sri Ksetra ruled the surrounding area. The capital was an important entrepôt between China and India. It was located not far from the sea as the Ayeyarwady delta had not yet been formed. Trade with India brought deep cultural contacts. Sri Ksetra has yielded the most extensive remains of Buddhism. With the rise of Bagan in the ninth century the town lost its prestige. Then decline set in. In the middle of the eleventh century king Anawratha ordered the destruction of the extensive city walls which enclosed the city like a horseshoe. He also destroyed the palace and over one hundred monuments within the city walls.
The Pyu built many Buddhist stupas and other religious buildings. Characteristic for the Pyu stupas is their conical or cylindrical dome which reveals Indian influences and differs from later bell domes in Bagan. South of the city walls is the brick-and-plaster stupa of Bawbawgyi Paya. It was built in the sixth century and has the earliest cylindrical dome in the area. The solid zedi is built on five terraces. The top terrace is forbidden for women. Unlike structures of later centuries the dome has no decorations. Evidence suggests that Bawbawgyi Paya was one of four monuments to mark the corners that delineated Sri Ksetra. Only two other stupas are visible today: Payagyi and Payama.
The Bebe temple is a cube-based structure with a sikhar or mound-like superstructure atop the cubic base. Some sources say the temple was constructed in the tenth century. The temple looks like a prototype pahto for some of the temples at Bagan. Inside the temple is a stone tablet or plaque with a seated image of the Buddha and some of his pupils. Leimyethna Paya is wider and squatter than the Bebe temple. Its doorways have been blocked off to prevent destruction by looters seeking valuable relics. The vaulted ceiling is no longer accessible for viewing. It is supported by a pillar faced with original Buddha reliefs. The sanctuary reveals a stone tablet with a seated image of the Buddha between some structures.

Biking Bagan, Myanmar
Bagan certainly is one of the highlight of our trip to Myanmar! Visitors can explore the ancient city by car, foot, horse cart, ox cart, or hot air balloon. But the best way to get away from everyone and see the remotest temples and ruins is by bicycle.
We've spent several days straining our leg muscles - and it's so worth it. Watch Bagan through our eyes and see the temple city come alive.

Monywa, Myanmar
Video with images of the Hpo Win Daung Caves at Monywa a town in northern Myanmar on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River. It is the second largest town in northern Myanmar and serves as a major trade center for agricultural produce. Goods coming from India pass through Monywa on their way to other parts of Myanmar. Across the Chindwin River is a system of sandstone caves situated in a cleft in the Hpo Win Daung hills. The caves and the surrounding hills are named after U Hpo Win Daung, a famous alchemist who once lived among them.
The Hpo Win Daung Caves contain Buddhist statues, wood carvings and murals dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some of them may date as far back as the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. There are dozens of large and small caves in the area filled with old Buddhas. It is said that there are over four hundred thousand images in these and other nearby caves. In the Win Kaba cave several statues of a seated Buddha are placed in a row right at the entrances of the cave. The cave is guarded by chinthes or mythical griffins carved from the stone of the rock. In the Myint Mo cave decorative mural paintings are still visible behind the Buddha statues.
29 Day of Ceremonies and Thanaka, Bagan Day Five, Myanmar (Burma)
We Said Go Travel October 15, 2012 On this Sabbath day, we biked in the heat to Sulemani and there was a monk leading a service. Seeing the site being used for a ceremony was like having history come alive. At Maha Bodhi Pagoda, an Indian style temple, there are the seven weeks of Buddha's enlightenment. Both George and I got styled up with Thanaka, for beauty and protection.
For lunch we ate at Be Kind to Animals We enjoyed the traditional Tea Leaf Salad, Pumpkin Curry, Myanmar Tomato Curry, with rice, water, peanuts to start and tamarind flake candy to finish it was less than 7000K. They also had many juices like tamarind and mint but it the high heat we needed water.
We went back to Shwe Gu Gyi: which is one of the temples you can climb up. Quite a few do not allow it anymore. We had a bit of rain, great views, and were ready to view more temples. At Upalithein: it was all locked up but had great paintings. On the way back to town, we saw Hilo Milo and stopped for another sunset visit to Shwe Zigon Zedi.
At Shwe Zigon Zedi, the golden temple, I rung the bells for my birthday, and George made the birds fly away. For 1000K we each added Gold Leaf to the Buddha. It was a full day from 9:30am to 5:30pm of biking in the heat, a long hot sweaty day of seeing great sites and ceremonies!

Thanboddhay Pagoda in Monywa (Myanmar)
The Thanboddhay Pagoda in Monywa constitutes one of the primary tourist attractions in Myanmar. A rainbow of colours flash in the sunlight from the glass mosaic set in the surface of the spires gives it a magical aura. The main stupa contains Buddha images of all sizes, from inch-high ones set in rows upon ascending rows on all available wall space, both interior and exterior. Huge images are enshrined within. The total number of Buddha images in this pagoda complex is nearly 600,000, or to be exact, 582,363.
