The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site
The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm is just a quick drive down I-35 to 1200 Kansas City Road in Olathe. One of the few stagecoach stops left on the Santa Fe Trail, the Mahaffie Farm is the only one open as a public historic site. The site offers visitors a glimpse into farm life in the 1860s. Once you've gone through the exhibits at the Heritage Center and walk toward the farmhouse, you step back in time 150 years.

Cooking at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm
Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop has been one of my favorite places since I moved to Kansas and now, it is one of Chef Walter Staib's favorite places. I cannot express how gracious the staff, Alexis, and Tim, and all the folks at the Stagecoach Stop were to Chef Staib and ourselves while we were working on these episodes, and you're going to love this segment.
The kitchen of the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and historic farm site was warm and cozy. The fire crackled in the newly restored stove, spices lined the shelf, venison and Buffalo on the table waiting to be cooked, chestnuts already boiled and peeled. Katie Lange dressed in her 1860s finest welcomed Chef Walter Staib and his crew. Invited by the Santa Fe Trail Association to be part of the trail's bicentennial, Chef Walters visit had come to fruition. Katie and chef commenced cooking.
Chef Walter is host of the multi-Emmy award-winning PBS series A Taste of History. He operates the City Tavern in Philadelphia and intertwines history with a passion for food, real food, historic food.
James and Lucinda Mahaffie came to Kansas before it was a state and settled in Olathe. By 1865, they had built the fine stone house that still stands on the Santa Fe Trail. Though they always considered themselves farmers, a stage line contracted with the family to provide meals and other necessities for the stages passing by. Lucinda's reputation for tasty meals was spread up and down the trail. Katie and Chef Walter recreated one of those meals while the cameras rolled. They chopped, and sampled, and reveled in their mutual love of food and history. The bounty of the land, whether from hunting, or gardening, and raising livestock was brought to the table, seasoned and stewed.
In the interim, Chef Walter got a ride on the stagecoach, took a tour of the historic home from Alexis Woodall and learned a bit about oxen and hitching horses. Site director, Tim Talbott shared the story of the trail on this very spot. Katie and Chef Walter sampled their feast near day's end, bison stew, venison and chestnut pudding, a savory and complicated dish wrapped in dough and boiled, and a pie made from dried peaches. Simple foods for simpler times along the Santa Fe Trail.

Around Kansas - Butterfield Overland Dispatch Marker - Nov. 11, 2015
(Frank) Back again from Lecompton. (Deb) Wasn't that fun? (Frank) Yes it was. Yes it was, yes it was. (Deb) Yea, I love going to Lecompton. Well, this time we're gonna go to Atchison. We had...Michael and I went up to Atchison for just a wonderful event a few weeks ago and there's just so much history to talk about. And we also want to encourage people throughout the holiday season, don't just buy stuff, give people memberships. You know, in your historical societies and all kinds of organizations that need support and will help you learn. So, that's what this is all about. (Frank) It was a clear October afternoon, with just a hint of autumn's chill. Elton Beougher, president of the Smoky Hill Trail Association, took the microphone and introduced Mayor Jack Bower. Bower admitted to the history fans that until he was contacted about the placement of this marker, he had never heard of David Butterfield. So he did some research and was delighted to find that Butterfield represented many of the qualities for which Atchison prides itself including an entrepreneuring spirit. Jere DeBacker from Colorado, great grandson of the businessman, dressed in period clothing and told the crowd how pleased he was to be present for the dedication of the marker designating the beginning of the Butterfield Overland Dispatch route. Jere grew up with family stories and has been researching the Smoky Hill Trail and the BOD for most of his life. He is a founding member of the organization. The unveiling of the BOD marker along the Missouri River was a highlight of the 2015 Smoky Hill Trail Association Conference. Speakers Dr. Michael Olson, Lee Whiteley, Stanley Copeland, Paul Basgall, Tim Zwink, and Leo Oliva illuminated the rich history of the eastern piece of the trail. Each year, the location changes to enable different aspects of trail history to be interpreted and enjoyed through presentations and tours.

The Santa Fe Trail: This historic route was first traversed by Indians who discovered the twists, turns & passes. Later, Spanish Conquistadors and fur trappers became familiar with the route. By the time it was called the Santa Fe Trail, caravans of pack mules, wagon teams, prairie schooners and stagecoaches were lumbering over it daily, carting goods and people between the Missouri River and the Pacific Coast. This route was instrumental in ending the Mexican--American Civil war and incorporating the territories of New Mexico and California into the United States of America. The Amtrak Southwest Chief Route owes its name to the original great Santa Fe iron horse, the Super Chief.

The Missouri River: Starting Point for the Western Trails, by Travis Boley

The Missouri River: Starting Point for the Western Trails, by Travis Boley, Association Manager for the Oregon-California Trails Association - Tuesday, October 27, 2015.

For many pioneers headed west, the Missouri River served as the
first leg in their journey to the Western Trails. Travis Boley,,
rethinks the Missouri River in terms of its unique status as a
waterway that doubles as a National Historic Trail.
He is already engaged in creating a 40 mile hiking/biking trail
in the shared historic corridor of the Oregon/California/Santa Fe
Trail from Sugar Creek, Missouri to Gardner, Kansas. It will
intersect with the Katy Trail Extension at 63rd and Blue Ridge
Blvd. in Raytown, Missouri making it possible for hikers and
bikers to easily access the Missouri River at the former Wayne
City Landing near present day Sugar Creek, Missouri.
His grander vision includes opening up wide swaths of the
Missouri River shoreline to allow similar non-motorized access to
our metro area’s riverfront, including trails that connect the
remaining historic sites from the Lewis & Clark Expedition and
the old riverboat landings for the wagon roads. This concept
would fully realize the idea that Congress established in the
1968 National Trails Act, which called for the building of
“retracement” trails in such corridors to forever preserve these
corridors.
