Mahasthangarh is one of the earliest urban archaeological sites so far discovered in Bangladesh. The village Mahasthan in Shibganj thana of Bogra District contains the remains of an ancient city which was called Pundranagara or Paundravardhanapura in the territory of Pundravardhana. A limestone slab bearing six lines in Prakrit in Brahmi script, discovered in 1931, dates Mahasthangarh to at least the 3rd century BC. The fortified area was in use till the 18th century AD.
Together with the ancient and medieval ruins, the mazhar (holy tomb) of Shah Sultan Balkhi Mahisawar built at the site of a Hindu temple is located at Mahasthangarh. He was a dervish (holy person devoted to Islam) of royal lineage who came to the Mahasthangarh area, with the objective of spreading Islam among non-Muslims. He converted the people of the area to Islam and settled there.
Mahasthangarh was the capital of an ancient locality in eastern subcontinential area named Pundravardhana. According to the Ancient Indian mythology, there was a Pre Aryan civilization founded by a mythological prince named ‘Pundra’ who was the son of mythological demon king ‘Bali’. King Bali had five sons who founded five civilizations in eastern Indian region named Anga, Vanga, kalinga, Pundra and Sumha; which was thought to be named after them. But there are several theories regarding the word ‘Pundra’. It was a civilization free from Aryan culture. And it was a powerful, rich and sovereign kingdom during Alexander the Great’s invasion. Alexander didn’t invade in Pundravardhana. An ancient sculpture found in Pundravardhana containing texts saying that it was ruled under the Mouryan Empire when Asoka the Great was the empire. It was also a very important city during the Gupta, Sunga, Pala, Sena dynesties. It was a very important city of the Gupta Empire. During the 400 years long Pala period when the Buddhist civilization flourished in this region, the largest Buddhist monastery in the South of the Himalayas, “Somapura Mahavihara”, and also the Great Nalanda Mahavihara were not so far from this city.
মহাস্থানগড় বাংলাদেশের একটি অন্যতম প্রাচীন পুরাকীর্তি। প্রসিদ্ধ এই নগরী ইতিহাসে পুণ্ড্রবর্ধন বা পুণ্ড্রনগর নামেও পরিচিত ছিল। এক সময় মহাস্থানগড় বাংলার রাজধানী ছিল। যিশু খ্রিষ্টের জন্মেরও আগে অর্থাৎ প্রায় আড়াই হাজার বছর পূর্বে এখানে সভ্য জনপদ গড়ে উঠেছিল প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক ভাবেই তার প্রমাণ মিলেছে। ২০১৬ সালে এটি সার্কের সাংস্কৃতিক রাজধানী হিসেবে ঘোষণা হয়।
প্রাচীর বেষ্টিত এই নগরীর ভেতর রয়েছে বিভিন্ন আমলের প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন। কয়েক শতাব্দী পর্যন্ত এ স্থান পরাক্রমশালী মৌর্য, গুপ্ত, পাল ও সেন শাসকবর্গের প্রাদেশিক রাজধানী ও পরবর্তীকালে হিন্দু সামন্ত রাজাদের রাজধানী ছিল। তৃতীয় খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দ থেকে পঞ্চদশ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত অসংখ্য হিন্দু রাজা ও অন্যান্য ধর্মের রাজারা রাজত্ব করেন। মহাস্থানগড়ের অবস্থান বগুড়া জেলার শিবগঞ্জ উপজেলার অন্তর্গত। বগুড়া শহর থেকে প্রায় ১৩ কি.মি. উত্তরে করতোয়া নদীর পশ্চিম তীরে গেলে এই শহরের ধ্বংসাবশেষ দেখা যায়৷
ইতিহাস:
সেন বংশের শেষ রাজা লক্ষ্মণসেন (১০৮২-১১২৫) যখন গৌড়ের রাজা ছিলেন তখন এই গড় অরক্ষিত ছিল। মহাস্থানের রাজা ছিলেন নল যার বিরোধ লেগে থাকত তার ভাই নীল এর সাথে। এসময় ভারতের দাক্ষিণাত্যের শ্রীক্ষেত্র নামক স্থান থেকে এক অভিশপ্ত ব্রাহ্মণ এখানে অসেন পাপের প্রায়শ্চিত্ত করতে। তিনি পরশু বা কুঠার দ্বারা মাতৃহত্যার দায়ে অভিশপ্ত ছিলেন। পরবর্তীতে তিনিই এই দুই ভাইয়ের বিরোধের অবসান ঘটান এবং রাজা হন। এই ব্রাহ্মণের নাম ছিল রাম। ইতিহাসে তিনি পরশুরাম নামে পরিচিত। কিংবদন্তি অনুযায়ী তিনি ছিলেন একজন অত্যাচারী।
রাজা পরশুরামকে উচ্ছেদ করে ইসলাম ধর্মের শান্তি প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে আসেন ফকির বেশি আধ্যাত্মিক শক্তিধারী দরবেশ হযরত শাহ সুলতান মাহমুদ বলখী (র:) এবং তার শীষ্য। ধর্ম প্রচারক শাহ্ সুলতান বলখী (রঃ) সম্পর্কে রয়েছে আশ্চর্য কিংবদন্তি। কথিত আছে, তিনি মহাস্থানগড় অর্থাৎ প্রাচীন পুন্ড্রনগরে প্রবেশ করার সময় করতোয়া নদী পার হয়েছিলেন একটা বিশাল মাছের আকৃতির নৌকার পিঠে চড়ে। মহাস্থানগড় পৌছে তিনি ইসলামের দাওয়াত দিতে থাকেন, প্রথমে রাজা পরশুরামের সেনাপ্রধান, মন্ত্রি এবং কিছু সাধারণ মানুষ ইসলামের বার্তা গ্রহণ করে মুসলিম হয়। এভাবে পুন্ড্রবর্ধনের মানুষ হিন্দু ধর্ম থেকে ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করতে থাকলে রাজা পরশুরামের সাথে শাহ সুলতানের বিরোধ বাধে এবং এক সময় সুলতান বলখী পুন্ড্রবর্ধনের শেষ রাজা পরশুরামকে (১২০৫-১২২০) যুদ্ধে পরাজিত করে পুন্ড্রবর্ধন জয় করেন।
অবকাঠামো:
• গোবিন্দ ভিটা, দুর্গের উত্তর পূর্ব কোণে অবস্থিত একটি মন্দির
• খুল্লনার ধাপ, একটি মন্দির
• মঙ্গলকোট, মহাস্থানগড় জাদুঘর থেকে ১.৬ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণ বা দক্ষিণ পশ্চিমে অবস্থিত একটি মন্দির।
• গদাইবাড়ি ধাপ, খুল্লনার ধাপ থেকে ১ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে একটি মন্দির।
• তোতারাম পন্ডিতের ধাপ, দুর্গের ৪ কিলোমিটার উত্তর-পশ্চিমে অবস্থিত একটি আশ্রম।
• নরপতির ধাপ (ভাসু বিহার), তোতারাম পণ্ডিতের ধাপ হতে ১ কিলোমিটার উত্তর-পশ্চিমে অবস্থিত একগুচ্ছ আশ্রম।
• গোকুল মেধ, (লখীন্দরের বাসরঘর), দুর্গের তিন কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে একটি মন্দির।
• স্কন্ধের ধাপ, গোকুল মেধের ২ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণ পূর্বে একটি মন্দির।
• বৈরাগীর ভিটা, ১৯২৮-২৯ সালে খনন করা বৈরাগীর ভিটায় দুটি মন্দিরের ধ্বংসাবশেষ পাওয়া যায়।

Lakshindar Behular Basar Ghar | Mahasthangarh,Bogra | বেহুলার বাসর ঘর, মহাস্থানগড়,বগুড়া
This is one of the greatest archaeological place of Bogra. It is an excavated mound in the village of Gokul. On top of this 5 metre high podium you can see a square temple with a porch. Actually its a Buddhist temple, and it was built for the prayer. This medh fully covered green grass and it looks very beautiful. During the Summer season, nice view from the clouds of sky. Local people believe that this was the bashor ghor of Behula Lakkhindar. People come here to see architecture of ancient Bangladesh.
Gokul Medh: Also known as Behular Basar Ghar or Lakshindarer Medh, situated in the village Gokul, 3 km to the south of the citadel, off the Bogra-Rangpur road, connected by a narrow motorable road about 1 km. Excavations in 1934–36 revealed a terraced podium with 172 rectangular blind cells. It is dated 6th–7th century. Local mythology associates it with legendary Lakshmindara-Behula. The village Gokul also has several other mound Kansr Dhap has been excavated
Having returned to Champak Nagar, Chand Sadagar managed to rebuild his life. A son was born to him. They named the boy Lakshmindara. At around the same time Saha's wife gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Behula. Both the children grew up together and were a perfect made-for-each-other, but when their horoscopes were tallied, it was predicted that Lakshmindara would die of snake-bite on the wedding night. However, as both the children were already devotees of Manasa and were so well matched that the marriage went ahead. In spite of all the precautions, Manasa had her way, one of the snakes, sent by her, killed Lakshmindara.
To get back her husband's life from the Gods in the heavens, Behula sailed with her dead husband in a raft towards Heaven. She faced many dangers during her incredibly long and difficult journey. After she pleaded with the goddess, Manasa said, “You deserve to have him back, but this can only be done if you promise to convert your father-in-law to my worship. Chand Sadagar reluctantly agree.
Chand Sadagar worshipped Manasa on the eleventh day of the waning moon every month. He could not forgive the goddess for all the suffering he had to go through. He offered her flowers with the left hand and turned his face away from her image. Manasa did not hold anything against him for that. From then on Chand Sadagar and his family lived in peace and prosperity. Chand Sadagar’s status and prestige ensured that the worship of Manasa became generally accepted and respectable

মহাস্থানগড় বাংলাদেশের একটি অন্যতম প্রাচীন পুরাকীর্তি। প্রসিদ্ধ এই নগরী ইতিহাসে পুণ্ড্রবর্ধন বা পুণ্ড্রনগর নামেও পরিচিত ছিল।[১][২][৩] এক সময় মহাস্থানগড় বাংলার রাজধানী ছিল। যিশু খ্রিষ্টের জন্মেরও আগে অর্থাৎ প্রায় আড়াই হাজার বছর পূর্বে এখানে সভ্য জনপদ গড়ে উঠেছিল প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক ভাবেই তার প্রমাণ মিলেছে। ২০১৬ সালে এটি সার্কের সাংস্কৃতিক রাজধানী হিসেবে ঘোষণা হয়।[৪][৫]
প্রাচীর বেষ্টিত এই নগরীর ভেতর রয়েছে বিভিন্ন আমলের প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন। কয়েক শতাব্দী পর্যন্ত এ স্থান পরাক্রমশালী মৌর্য, গুপ্ত, পাল ও সেন শাসকবর্গের প্রাদেশিক রাজধানী ও পরবর্তীকালে হিন্দু সামন্ত রাজাদের রাজধানী ছিল। তৃতীয় খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দ থেকে পঞ্চদশ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত অসংখ্য হিন্দু রাজা ও অন্যান্য ধর্মের রাজারা রাজত্ব করেন। মহাস্থানগড়ের অবস্থান বগুড়া জেলার শিবগঞ্জ উপজেলার অন্তর্গত।[৩] বগুড়া শহর থেকে প্রায় ১৩ কি.মি. উত্তরে করতোয়া নদীর পশ্চিম তীরে গেলে এই শহরের ধ্বংসাবশেষ দেখা যায়৷।

Behular Lakhindar Bashor Ghor Bogra at Mohasthangarh. This is also called Behular Medh. Here you can visit with your family because it is a historical place. Pundravardhana of Bogura (Now it is Mahasthangarh) was the first capital of this ancient Bengal of Bangladesh. This was one of the biggest structures in Bogura that were known as 'Behular Bashor Ghor' or 'Gokul', just 10 km North of main Bogra town and 2 km south from Mahasthangarh and middle of Palashbari and Ramshahar village.
