Everglades, Flamingo, Florida, United States
Eco Pond, Flamingo, Everglades National park, Florida, United States 2002 - bird watching, marina shore, before hurricane Katrina.
One of the perennial destinations for birding in Everglades National Park, Eco Pond sits near the end of the Main Park Road in Flamingo. During the 2005 hurricanes, a wave of salt water washed across the landscape, changing the pond’s salinity, affecting the wildlife living there. This loop still provides excellent birdwatching and wildlife sightings, but birds no longer blot out the sky while they jostle for a roost at dusk.

I don't know why but Bruce always wants to park in the sun so that is why he is backing up to put the van in the shade.

Everglades National Park
11-22-14: Then we moved on to our main destination: Everglades National Park. This whole area at the end southern tip of Florida was an area I had never been to before even though I had lived in Florida from 1998-2002. I had only been to the northern area with my sisters in 2001. So all of this was pretty new to me.
It was overcast, yet the temperature was pretty good with a breeze. We first hit the Ernest F. Coe Visitor’s Center and then started to check out the various hiking trails and boardwalks at Royal Palm (Anhinga Trail and Gumbo Limbo Trail), Long Pine Key, Pinelands, and Pay-hay-okee Overlook. Since it was getting late in the afternoon, we then headed down to the very end of the road to Eco Pond and Flamingo Visitor’s Center before it closed at 4:30 p.m. We were at the very southern end tip of Florida (not counting the keys). They had a “Mosquito Meter” there with a rating of “Horrible”. The mosquitoes were only bad at the Flamingo area though. And the strong breeze helped keep the mosquitoes away. Then we backtracked to West Lake, which had a wonderful boardwalk through mangroves. Finally, our last stop was Mahogany Hammock.
The sun peaked out at this point and seemed like it was going to get clearer. But… then the rain came back. But at least we got done everything we wanted to get done for the day.

Everglades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. In the United States, it is the largest tropical wilderness, the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River, and is visited on average by one million people each year. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.

Royal Palm
Royal Palm is one of the most popular places to visit in Everglades National Park. Just 15 miles away from south Miami, it features the Anhinga Trail and the Gumbo Limbo Trail. The Anhinga Trail winds through Taylor Slough and a sawgrass prairie. The Gumbo Limbo Trail is a self-guided paved trail winding through a subtropical hardwood hammock.

The Gumbo Limbo Trail leaves from the Royal Palm Visitor's Center and loops through a dense jungle hammock of Gumbo Limbo Trees. Also called the 'tourist tree' due to its red flaky bark and underskin, the Gumbo Limbo is fast growing and quite tolerant to salt and calcareous soils. The two largest Gumbo Limbo Trees in America are located in Key West, Florida and Captiva Island, Florida respectively.

Everglades – Itinerary Part 2 – Miami – Audio guide – MyWoWo Travel App
If you decide to make your way into the wild heart of the glades, you'll need to head south along Highway 9336; the first stop on the way is Homestead, where a visit to Coral Castle is a must. This rather unusual stone monument comprises a series of structures, including a sundial, a tower and huge walls. It is the work of the Latvian artist Edward Leedskalnin, and it is such a singular creation that there is a notice for visitors on a stone at the entrance: You will be seeing unusual accomplishment.
When you resume your journey, after Florida City and a stretch of flat terrain, it's time to venture into the actual Everglades National Park. Make sure you stop off at the Royal Palm Visitor Center for a stroll along the Anhinga Nature Trail, about a kilometer long, named after the anhinga, a black bird with a long neck that can be found in the area. An alternative, shorter trail is the Gumbo Limbo, which takes you into a stretch of grass, climbing plants and copses characterized by the presence of the gumbo limbo, a tree with a distinctive red bark. If you go another 20 kilometers or so, you can admire the largest mahogany tree in the United States, at the Mahogany Hammock.
Once you reach Flamingo, you should take a boat trip and, why not, in a canoe? It's the only way to explore the swamp…

Full Hike: A Family-Friendly Walk in Everglades National Park (Florida)
Hike Description:
The best way to experience the Everglades National Park is gliding—at speed—through the expansive sawgrass marshes on an airboat while pondering which to save: one's hat or one's life. But not too far from the Homestead park entrance is the much safer, walkable, family-friendly Anhinga Trail that offers an appropriate preview of what is to come. The trail itself is short but the wildlife is abundant: egrets and anhingas pose in the distance, cormorants dive for fishes then savor their meals, and well-camouflaged alligators idly sunbath without a care in the world. The accessibility and proximity to many other surrounding trails—for example, the adjacent Gumbo Limbo Trail—attract park visitors in troves. Amble parking, restrooms, vending machines, and interpretive signs round out the amenities.
Self Commentary:
I saw some gators but they were mostly far away; the one in the video was first spotted by other people, otherwise I would not have noticed it. Unfortunately, no close-up footage of an anhinga, either; there is a distance example at around 4:10 and photo through the link below. Note: cormorants and anhingas are similarly profiled bird species, but with a few distinctive differences. The hike itself is very easy to access, with more trails nearby to extend the experience. From Homestead, on the way going into the park, stop by a certain fruit stand with a peculiar backstory to sample the best that Florida has to offer.

What are Hammocks?
Hammocks are shady highland habitats that can sustain many hardwood trees. The Arawak peoples referred to Hammocks as sleeping place and they are what we see in most of the shady parks in South Miami. A great place for wildlife to call home and for migratory birds to rest as they take their long journeys through our peninsula.
