We are driving right now on the scenic Skyline road which runs the entire length of the Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
The winding north–south road was built between 1931 and 1939. On September 22, 2005, Skyline Drive was designated a National Scenic Byway.
But today we will be driving only half of this epic road; we will descend at Hwy 211 crossing and we will be visiting Shenandoah cavern.
Shenandoah Caverns was discovered in 1884 during the construction of a local railway.
It opened to the public in 1922. Because it features an elevator and its one mile tour is quite flat, it makes it one of the easiest caves to explore in the area.
Virginia has no less than 4,000 caves! We can say that Shenandoah Caverns it is for sure in the top five in term of its beauty.

Day 11: The Wilderness Road (part 2)
After visiting Sycamore Shoals and Elizabethton I drove north to Bristol Tennessee to begin the 1 st portion of the Wilderness Road. Upon leaving Bristol you are quickly in Virginia heading west towards the Cumberland Gap. The first portion of the Wilderness Road takes you through Virginia to the Cumberland Gap at the junction of the Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia state lines.
I made it to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (VA), and spent the night at the Cumberland Gap Wilderness Road Campground. The next morning I would start the drive through the Gap and on to the end of the Wilderness road at Fort Boonesborough near Lexington Kentucky.

Lexington and Natural Bridge in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia 1957
Lexington and Natural Bridge in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia - Time capsule from 1957. Jefferson's Natural Bridge is not only sublime, the Bridge is the 'narrator' in this Lexington Chamber of Commerce promo feature! For it is I the bridge... The Natural Bridge tells you about Rockbridge County, Virginia, All these natural beauties my county offers you today as it has since time immemorial.
No doubt, some 'interesting' words issue forth from Virginia's Natural Bridge, the 1950s ethos is the 'rock' of this text.
As a fan of Thomas Jefferson and the Bridge he purchased from his favorite guy, King George III :) on July 5, 1774, I thought this video a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era. The content, the sound, images and description of Rockbridge County are reflections of the time period of the 1950's, it seemed interesting to pull out of the archives this historical artifact and present it for historical purposes.
Perhaps the image of Natural Bridge seems unchanged, but what is says would be different today. Every generation may have their own words to put into the rolling tones of a Natural Bridge narration. In his book, Notes on the State of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson called his bridge sublime. What would Thomas Jefferson have wanted his Bridge to say?

Shenandoah River Millville WV Dam - 1906
The Flow at the Dam on December 27, 2014 was 1.1 Billion Gallons Per Day
The Shenandoah River is a tributary of the Potomac River, 55.6 miles (89.5 km) long with two forks approximately 100 miles (160 km) long each merging at Front Royal, Virginia, in the River flow through the States of Virginia and West Virginia. The principal tributary of the Potomac (approximately 20 percent), the river and its tributaries drain the central and lower Shenandoah Valley and the Page Valley in the Appalachians on the west side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in northwestern Virginia and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
