Sean Faircloth - A Plan for a Secular America
Sean Faircloth is author of Attack of the Theocrats! How the Religious Right Harms Us All — and What We Can Do About It, a book which offers a specific strategy for secular organizing.
Faircloth recently returned from a spring speaking tour of New Zealand and Australia, including speaking at the Sydney Opera House.
Faircloth served a decade in Maine's legislature, successfully spearheading over thirty laws, many pertaining to child welfare and women's rights.
Faircloth had a 100% voting record with the Maine Women's Lobby for all ten years in elective office, often successfully initiating related legislation. Faircloth served on the Judiciary Committee, the Appropriations Committee, and, in his last term, he was elected Majority Whip by his colleagues.
Faircloth was opening speaker for presidential candidate Barack Obama at the Bangor Civic Center in 2008.
Faircloth has served as opening speaker for Richard Dawkins on three tours of the United States. Prof. Dawkins is, by some measures, the most cited living scientist.
Faircloth had the idea for the Maine Discovery Museum, leading the four-year $4.5 million project from concept to completion.
Both in his book and in his work, Faircloth focuses on specific plans to organize secular citizens for a world based on reason and science. Faircloth has extensive experience in political organizing and lobbying at both the state and federal level.
Illustrating Thoreau's Maine Woods: A Photographer's Journey
Scot Miller discusses his seven-year project photographing northern Maine for his new book, The Maine Woods: A Photographic Journey Through an American Wilderness, which combines contemporary imagery with text from Henry David Thoreau’s classic essay collection, The Maine Woods (first published 150 years ago). He will also screen The Unexpected Journey, a short documentary about the making of the book.
Both Thoreau and Miller's journeys took place alongside the people and traditions of the Penobscot tribe, past and present. Special guest James Eric Francis, Sr., Director of Cultural and Historic Preservation for the Penobscot Nation, opens the evening with a presentation entitled, A Sense of Place: Henry David Thoreau's Wabanaki Perspective.

A police officer responding to a domestic abuse call in Flagstaff, Arizona, was shot by the suspect. The exchange was caught by the officer's body cam.
Normal school
A normal school is a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers. Its purpose is to establish teaching standards or norms, hence its name. Most such schools are now called teachers' colleges.
In 1685, John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, founded what is generally considered the first normal school, the École Normale, in Reims. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, normal schools in the United States and Canada trained primary school teachers, while in Europe normal schools educated primary, secondary and tertiary-level teachers.

She earned her medical degree from New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, and completed her residency in Family Medicine at New Hampshire Dartmouth Family Medicine at Concord Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. The aircraft was not considered fully operational until the 1949 F-84D model and the design matured only with the definitive F-84G introduced in 1951. In 1954, the straight-wing Thunderjet was joined by the swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak fighter and RF-84F Thunderflash photo reconnaissance aircraft.
The Thunderjet became the USAF's primary strike aircraft during the Korean War, flying 86,408 sorties and destroying 60% of all ground targets in the war as well as eight Soviet-built MiG fighters. Over half of the 7,524 F-84s produced served with NATO nations, and it was the first aircraft to fly with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team. The USAF Strategic Air Command had F-84 Thunderjets in service from 1948 through 1957.
The F-84 was the first production fighter aircraft to utilize inflight refueling and the first fighter capable of carrying a nuclear weapon, the Mark 7 nuclear bomb. Modified F-84s were used in several unusual projects, including the FICON and Tom-Tom dockings to the B-29 Superfortress and B-36 bomber motherships, and the experimental XF-84H Thunderscreech turboprop.
The F-84 nomenclature can be somewhat confusing. The straight-wing F-84A to F-84E and F-84G models were called the Thunderjet. The F-84F Thunderstreak and RF-84F Thunderflash were different airplanes with swept wings. The XF-84H Thunderscreech (not its official name) was an experimental turboprop version of the F-84F. The F-84F swept wing version was intended to be a small variation of the normal Thunderjet with only a few different parts, so it kept the basic F-84 number. Production delays on the F-84F resulted in another order of the straight-wing version; this was the F-84G.

Modified F-84s were used in several unusual projects, including the FICON and Tom-Tom dockings to the B-29 Superfortress and B-36 bomber motherships, and the experimental XF-84H Thunderscreech turboprop.
The F-84 nomenclature can be somewhat confusing. The straight-wing F-84A to F-84E and F-84G models were called the Thunderjet. The F-84F Thunderstreak and RF-84F Thunderflash were different airplanes with swept wings. The XF-84H Thunderscreech (not its official name) was an experimental turboprop version of the F-84F. The F-84F swept wing version was intended to be a small variation of the normal Thunderjet with only a few different parts, so it kept the basic F-84 number. Production delays on the F-84F resulted in another order of the straight-wing version; this was the F-84G.
