The Sunriser with John Logan, WAGM TV-8, Presque Isle, ME
First, allow me to apologize for the poor video quality. The tape I recorded this onto (off air) was old to start with, and time has not been kind to it since. Still, despite the bad tape, this is an interesting little time capsule.
I used to work at WAGM TV-8, one of the smallest stations in the country at that time (market 206; only Alpina, MI was smaller at 214!). When I was hired, my first assignment was as a production assistant on The Sunriser. This was a 15-minute morning news and farm report that John Logan had done for years. There was a sort of tradition on the show, where every morning they'd have a goofy introduction for John, and somehow that fell to me. And boy, did I make goofy ones! I used to do all kinds of bad impressions and dumb comedy bits. Anyway, John seemed to like them. He never knew what they'd be beforehand, and they always seemed to make him chuckle. When the show came on, there were only four of us in the building; John, Pete Clowse (director), Gary (engineer), and me (setting up the studio, running the camera, etc.).
Here you can see how we began our broadcast day (minus the station's sign on). Every morning we had to play these Dayspring videos with a German nun wishing everyone a good morning with a vaguely religeous message. She always reminded me of a strangely cheerful Maria Ouspenskaya! These were completely outdated even at the time this video was recorded, but the station manager wanted us to play them anyway. Mother Basilea made us ironically smile, so I left it in here. Then, we'd have the goofy audio I made (here I do very bad impressions of Perry Mason and George HW Bush), and then John would say good morning and begin his show.
Based on the news items John read, I pinned this recording down to July 14th, 1990. At the time, George HW Bush was facing a scandal over the failure of Silverado Banking, which he and his brother had invested in.
John was great. He was a real pro, and so down to earth. Nothing ever seemed to phase him. What I like about this particular episode is how you can really see the personality of the man. He was very friendly, and he loved to laugh. Of course, he did take his show, audience, and farming very seriously, but he had a very cheerful nature.
Today, the market report, like Mother Basilea's Dayspring videos, is probably a thing of the past, since the audience for them has shrank considerably in the increasingly corporate world of farming. And that kitchen set! You probably won't ever see a local anchor doing his morning news and weather from a kitchen set! But John had the personality and the gravitas to pull it off. For local news-breaks during the CBS morning show that followed, he'd move to the actual news set and wear a sportscoat. But that early morning audience was mostly old timers, retirees, and farmers, and John offered them the things they wanted to know first thing in the morning; local/state/national news, the all-important weather, and the market report.
Everyone who spent any amount of time with John Logan still misses him, and that's a testament to the kind of man he was. Here you'll get a good sense of John's style, and that twinkle you'll see in his eye isn't from a video error from this beat up old VHS tape.
