Makalidurga is located about 60 km from Bangalore, and takes just short of two hours to reach the place. Makalidurga is situated at about 15 km from Doddaballapur.
As you reach Makalidurga, you are stunned by the stillness of the place. There are hardly any people around and a partly exciting experience to get away from the traffic and noise. It is best advised to carry your own food and water while coming for a day trek in Makalidurga.
The highlight of the destination is the Makalidurga fort which lies atop a granite hillock. While the trekking trail here may not be as popular as that of Savandurga, it is nevertheless worth the experience. And the best part is, you won’t find the trek to the top of the hillock too taxing.
It is a moderately difficult trek, and with some effort, you can easily climb the barren rocks and boulders. There are some directions on the boulders itself which you would do well to follow. The top of the hill gets you face to face with the ruins of a fort, which is spread across quite an area.
The view you get here of the lake which is located just a few km away from the destination is fascinating. And while at the top, don’t miss out on catching a sight of the train meandering through the hills at the bottom of the hill. The sight and sounds are definitely worthy of being caught in your camera.

Are you tired of your work life? Whatever your answer is, it will not make much difference for any excuse not to go through the thrilling experience within very reach. Makalidurga Hill – that’s the name, you hardly heard of. If you are in Bangalore, it’s a 2-3 hours of journey to quench your adventure craving. It’s an exemplary weekend destination for working people.
It’s approximately 50 KM from Bangalore just 10KM after Doddaballapur on the way to Gauribidanur, Karnataka.
Things to follow / Do's and Don’ts
1. Visit during Summer or winter season. At monsoon times, it will be slippery.
2. Weekends are crowded at morning time. So, it’s best to visit in week days mornings or afternoon time in weekends.
3. Don’t trash your plastic bags there.
4. Carry enough water. Minimum 1ltr/person. You may also carry glucose water or tablet with you. It will definitely help.
5. Avoid uncomfortable cloths.
Things to Carry
Plenty of water, Sunscreen, Cap, Glucose, Trekking shoes., Protein bars or Chocolate bars or other solid food items, Personal medication kit.
The Lake, rails, granite rocks, plateaus, blue sky, green graces, scenic views – all these together make Makalidurga a destination to chill out. Spend half a day here to maintain our fitness.

Lake View Trek: Makalidurga
This is Makalidurga, just 67 KMs off Silk Board after Doddaballapura. Park your vehicle, cross the rail lines, show the ticket and there you go. If you are far sighted enough, you might see South America in the south-west. By the time you realize that is a lake only, sudden passing by of train other side may astound you and the doppler effect of sound will reverb in your mind for sometime. Sounds like a movie script? Not at all. You can check in video all these things. Enjoy watching.

Makalidurga trek (banglore) 2017
Makalidurga is a hill fort situated near the village of the same name. It is 60 km north of Bangalore and 10 km after Doddaballapura on the way to gauribidanur. The Makalidurga trek is the nearest railway trek to Bangalore. It begins with a 2-km walk on the railway track from the station of Makalidurga. One can also ride bikes to the beginning of the trekking trail as well. A lot of refreshments is advised to be carried in case one wants to trek this hillock.
Makalidurga trek is of difficult level medium. There is a parking space created for vehicles in the base of the hill. One has to just cross the railway track and turn left. There is a small temple and some houses at the base of the trek. It is where the trek starts. Also, after a few meters, one can find a open ground with a view of the mountain. Turning right, would lead one to the trek path with markings all around. There are fort ruins and a temple at the top.

This trek was a surprise. I didn't know what to expect from this place but it turned out to be one of my favorite treks so far! This is based on the fact that it's still a little wild, and there aren't too many people yet.

KJM WDM- 3A hauled 16569 Yesvantpur (YPR)- Hyderabad Kacheguda (KCG) Tri-Weekly Express departs from Yelahanka Junction after completing a scheduled halt, and then heads towards Makalidurga Ghat section. The branch line that heads away from Yelahanka Junction is the Yelahanka- Chikkaballapura- Kolar- Bangarapet line. Meanwhile, we meet the 11448 GTL (Guntakal) WDM- 3D hauled 56504 Vijayawada (BZA)- Bangalore Cantt. (BNC) Passenger.
YELAHANKA:
Yelahanka is a suburb of Bangalore in the state of Karnataka originally envisaged as a satellite town of Bangalore city, but now part of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
The city of Yelahanka had been in existence prior to 12th century. The region was called 'Ilaipakka Naadu' during the rule of Cholas. A stone tablet of 1267 A.D found in Doddaballapur mentions Dechi Devarasa, ruling the region with Yelahanka as his capital under the aegis of Hoysala monarch 'Narasimha (Third)'.
Later, during Hoysala rein, the city came to be known as 'Elavanka' and gradually shifted to 'Yelahanka'.
Of the numerous Rulers of different dynasties who ruled with Yelahanka as their Capital, the Kempe Gowdas are the most acclaimed. Hiriya Kempe Gowda (Kempe Gowda the First) built a fort in the adjoining village of Bengaluru and developed it as his new capital, probably due to its strategic location and slightly cooler climate being at a higher altitude. It was his son, Immadi Kempe Gowda, who had the famous watch towers built in the four directions of the new city.
Some Temples in Yelahanka – like the Venugopala Swamy Temple – have remained as a testimony to its rich past. Although a Fort's remnant could not be traced, a street nearby the Venugopala Swamy Temple is still known as 'Kote Beedi' or 'Fort Street'.
MAKALIDURGA
Makalidurga is a hill fort situated near the village of the same name. It is 60 km north of Bangalore and 10 km after Doddaballapura on the way to gauribidanur. The fort at the summit has an old temple of Shiva with Nandi and in legend Markandeya Rishi performed penance here.
Makalidurga Fort stands at the top of a huge granite hillock, huddled up amidst the chains of hills, formed like a valley close to Ghati Subramanya, a well-known pilgrimage center. It has a fort on top, at the height of 1,117mts.

Ghati Dam also known as Sir M Vishweshwaraiah Dam at Doddaballapura, Bangalore Tourism is part of dams Karnataka Tourism. Ghati dam also know as Sir. M Vishweshwaraiah Dam, near Ghati Subramanya area about 60 kms from Bengaluru city. Ghati dam serves as a reservoir for irrigation purposes of surrounding area.
The Vishweshwaraiah dam was named after popular statesmen Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah .There is a narrow walkway above the dam, but has no railings, making it little risky to walk on. There are steps on the other side, through which one can access the other side of the dam. The rock bed of the dam is a nice place to enjoy the view of the dam and to enjoy the water flowing from the dam. Best time to visit is during the rainy season when the dam overflows, creating a magnificent view.
Ghati Subramanya is about 60km from Bangalore via Doddaballapura. Other place to visit near the dam are the Ghati Subramanya temple, kannada (ಘಾಟಿ ಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯ )is famous for the ancient Hindu temple and is a popular pilgrimage centre. Lord Subramanya’s form is that of a seven-hooded snake and it is believed that this is the region where he vanquished Ghatikasura, the demon. Makali Durga famous trekking spot, with ancient fort above it. Gunjur Lake appears in the shape of South America and is known for bird watching and enjoying a simple picnic. Over all an ideal place for silent, crowd free, weekend get away with family and friends. Makali Durga rail way station is the nearest railway station, which can be used to reach this place.

Makalidurga is a small hill located 60 Kms away from Bangalore. The Hill is know for trekking and is located right next to Makalidurga Railway Station. It is a medium level Trek which can be completed under 3 to 4 Hours.

Public transport is very limited. Renting a self-drive Car is one the best option. Trekking Time: 06:00 Hrs to 17:00 Hrs
