TEA PLANTATIONS, HOT SPRINGS & SURREAL CRATER LAKE, Bandung, Java, Indonesia

In this travel video we show you the destination of Bandung in Java Island, Indonesia and give you a tour of the stunning tea plantations, natural hot springs (heated by underground magma) and the totally surreal, turquoise blue crater lake of Kawah Putih.
Bandung, Indonesia's 3rd largest city, also has a few points of interest within the city itself, including Bandung Zoo, Bandung Grand Mosque and a Jeans Street, but the real allure of Bandung is its surrounding countryside.
You should not miss Tangkuban Perahu, a steaming stratovolcano located 30km north of Bandung. You can go to the top of the volcano and peer into the colossal crater where the powerful smell of sulphur hits you like a ton of bricks.
You can check out the Taman Hutan Raya forest park, 9km outside Bandung where you can see the beautiful Dago Waterfall, Dutch cave (Goa Belanda) and bunkers.
There are tea plantations in several locations around Bandung. There is one at the foot of Tangkuban Perahu. The best known is perhaps the Malabar Tea planation, located about 42km South of Bandung in Pengalengan. However, the most beautiful tea plantation we found was one right beside Kawah Putih, the surreal turquoise-blue crater lake that you simply must visit. Walking or running through this tea planation will make you feel so alive!
The Sari Ater hot spring resort is located in Ciater, a little further North beyond Tangkuban Perahu. This is the perfect place to experience hot springs. They are very hot indeed with the water temperature hovering around 40ºC. People find them very therapeutic and great for improving blood circulation and you can even hire an Indonesian professional to give you a massage here also!
Kawah Putih, the undoubtable highlight of Bandung, is an extraordinary place, straight out of a fairytale. It's located 50km to the south-west of Bandung, beyond Ciwidey. This turquoise-blue coloured lake is so acidic that it burns skin so don't try to swim here. It's a phenomenal place for photography though. The stench of sulphur here is slightly overpowering and many visitors opt to wear the provided breathing masks.
About 24 west of Bandung, in Padalarang, you'll find the amazing stone garden, a hilltop covered in large limestone boulders, some of which contain embedded marine fossils, indicating that this valley once lay underneath a shallow ocean. This place is a landscape photographer's dream. Just a kilometre away, you can check out Gua Pawon, a cave where the fossilized remains prehistoric human beings were discovered.Inside Gua Pawon we also witnessed the most incredible display of bats we have ever seen; literally thousands of bats circling overhead. It was mind-blowing.

Tea Plantation and Factory Malabar, South of Bandung, West Java - INDONESIA
The history of Malabar dates back to the 1890 when the culture of Dutch began to flow into the highland of Pangalengan.
Pangalengan, known as the Swiss of Indonesia.
Malabar tea estate was established in 1896 and Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha was the plantation’s first manager. Later on, he was the General Manager to all tea estate in the Pangalengan region.

During his 32 years as manager of the tea estate he had accomplished his job enormously. He erected two tea factories in Malabar, one was near his residence also his office, called Malabar tea factory and the other was erected later (1905), called Tanara (now Malabar tea factory). The first Malabar tea factory is now known as the “Sporthall Gelora Dinamika”.

The tea picker gathered in the Malabar tea factory’s yard. The tree Ki Hujan on the left side was planted in 1931, signing the people hope that rainfall will come in adequate amount.
Both were built in the center of his tea plantation as to enable collected tea leaves reached the factory within fresh condition.
By that time, collected tea leaves were carried in baskets and tea pickers had to walk to the factory through tea bushes. Therefore, small paths were made crossing from every directions embracing the areas to facilitate its transport, maintenance, spraying and to do the figuring of production. To inspect those activities, a watch tower was built at the peak of Gunung Nini , which also used as a resting place.

To operate his machineries in the factories and light in houses, a power house of hydro-electric power-plant was built by the river of Cilaki, with 3000 HP. Up to now, the power house has been functioning, partly.
Presumably, Bosscha had chosen the right place to live. He loves his life in Malabar. He became a part of it. He didn’t even bother to get married. He died on the 26th November 1928 and was buried among his tea bushes in Malabar tea estate as he had requested. His simple tomb is still there, unspoiled.

Active Volcano, Tea Plantations, Sundanese Restaurant, Bandung, Java, Indonesia
The best part was when we went to see the inside of a caldera of a volcano. It was still smoking sulfur but wasn't lava active the day we went. So not sure if this would be considered active or dormant, as I'm not a volcanologist. But it was pretty exciting to know that you're standing above a once active volcano.
At the volcanic crater there were a number of peddlers trying to sell postcards, toys and other things. It was annoying as I only wanted to see the crater, not buy stuff while I was there. And the cards they were trying to sell were just plain photos of the crater stuck on postcard backing that had been taken at least twenty years previous, judging by the type of colours used in the images.
Even though this was a public area, to enter we had to pay per person at a boom gate. Then pay for a piece of paper guide to it, if we wanted that. A common and repetitive situation was that just about everything cost money to see and there were different prices for tourists and natives. We paid $2.50 to see some small waterfalls later on, and had to pay another $2.50 if we wanted to see the large waterfall!!!
We also went to a Sundanese restaurant as well as got to see Bandung at dusk. There was an opportunity to see bubbling mud, much like Rotorua, but it was over an hour round trip and cost about $6 each so we didn't have the time or the inclination to do it.
One of the things I wanted to see on this trip was true cultural differences. Being able to go to a traditional Sundanese restaurant and visit an active volcano was definitely something I couldn't do in Sydney so I really enjoyed this part of the trip.

[Wonderful PART 2] Malabar Tea Plantation, Like a Giant Green Carpet
Malabar tea plantation in Pangalengan, Bandung regency, has very beautiful scenery. Besides expanse of tea tree like a giant tapestry, there are also tombs and houses a relic of the Dutch KAR Bosscha.
Actually, our plan was just a morning stroll on Jl Ir H Juanda aka Dago. But when gathered in one fast-food restaurant, a friend suggested to go to Pangalengan. Finally our party drove to the south, using 3 motorcycles.
Distance from Bandung to Pangalengan about 40 Km, we traveled in a time of 2 hours due to traffic on Market Pangalengan. Got there we were confused by the attractions of the destination, and eventually decided to visit the Malabar tea plantation.
The plantation is located at an altitude of 1,550 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 16-26 degrees Celsius. The tea garden is also full of history, because there is a tomb and relics of KAR Bosscha home built in 1894. You definitely know his name, immortalized as the name of the observatory in Lembang, Bandung north. Located not far from the guesthouse Malabar.
The tomb was located in a small forest in the middle of tea gardens. Conditions are maintained, surrounded by a fence, colorful coleus plants decorate around it. Meneer residence Bosscha now it has been refurbished, plus a 11-room office. By PTPN VIII Malabar Pensions and Bed and Breakfast, the house was rented out to tourists. The price is also quite affordable.
Entering the Malabar tea plantation, a security guard greeted us at the gate. He explains the choice between turn right and turn left. But just the same, both directions was tipped in the tea garden.
Turn right, over a smooth track because it is commonly used by management officials Malabar (PTPN VII), it is suitable for 'tea walk'. Meanwhile, if you turn left, you will immediately meet with the tea pickers and cow milker. Hole course, because more often impassable trucks and cow milk or tea.
We decided to turn to the right. The first place we visited was the Malabar Tea Corner office complex estates. Tea Corner is selling tea, souvenirs, and a variety of souvenirs typical of Malabar. After a warm and delicious tasting tea plantations Malabar original products, we proceeded to the plantation area.
The beauty of the tea gardens can not be doubted. As far as the eye could see, the green expanse of the tea tree like a giant tapestry. We took a walk among the tea trees are ready to be picked. Not tired of it enjoy God's amazing grace is. Typical of the cool mountain air made us not want to move quickly.

Ciwidey Tea Plantation is one of West Java area that produces the best Indonesian black teas with export quality. Ciwidey is actually a small town in southern Bandung, the gateway to the beautiful highland in the slope of mount Patuha. The most visited places here are Kawah Putih (white crater) and Situ (lake) Patengan.
Along the ride we saw beautiful tea plantation, it is like a green carpet covering the hills. Especially when the early morning when the mist was spotted in the garden and the settlement became a fascinating natural treats. The smiles of the tea pickers will add to the atmosphere Ciwidey Tea Plantation more comfortable and friendly.

This is a short overview of the tea plantation that is located on the slopes of the active volcano, Tangkuban Perahu. This volcano is located 18 miles+- north of the city of Bandung, Indonesia. There is also a factory at this location that process the tea.

Malabar is an area in Indonesia in Java. It is in the province of West Java, in the Bandung District, south of the city of Bandung near Mount Malabar (Gunung Malabar), a stratovolcano. It was formerly well known as a hill station near to the town of Pangalengan for recreation during the Dutch period in Indonesia. Some of the tea estates in the area provide good facilities for tourists to stay overnight, walk through tracks in the tea plantations, and bath in nearby hot springs. One of the main tea estates in the area, the Malabar Tea Estate, was for many years (1886–1928) managed by K.A.R. Bosscha who was active in the development of the region.
