Malibu Community Takes A Stand Against Bulldozer Plan for Malibu Lagoon

Bulldozing 101: How To Ruin A Perfect Wave
(Saturday, April 23, 2010 - Malibu, CA) Local residents, environmentalists, students, parents and the extended community made some noise on Saturday to protest the approach and lack of foresight regarding the Malibu Lagoon Restoration and Enhancement Plan.
Point Dume State Beach-Malibu, CA
Point Dume is a promontory on the coast of Malibu, California that juts out into the Pacific Ocean.
Point Dume was named by George Vancouver in 1793 in honor of Padre Francisco Dumetz of Mission San Buenaventura. The name was misspelled as Dume on Vancouver's map and has never been corrected.[1]
Up to the 1940s Point Dume was a windblown, treeless bluff covered by native chapparal. Post-WWII the bluff was slowly settled by independent-minded folks, who planted trees and other non-native flora among their single-family homesteads. In 1968, Point Dume Elementary School was opened, but was closed in 1980. It reopened in 1996 and remains open today, known as the Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School. By 2007, many of the simple homesteads were torn down to make way for mansions and mega-mansions behind walls, many with expansive ocean views while other large homes were surrounded by mature trees.
The northwestern most tip of Point Dume was designated a California State Preserve, the Point Dume State Beach. Located along Cliffside Drive, very limited parking is available. Its beach is protected by the Lifeguard unit of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Street parking is available on Grasswood, a short walk from the headlands. The cove, located just south of the point, was once a popular clothing optional meeting spot in the sixties and seventies.

The city really worked with state parks and the Malibu Bay partners do contribute money to help them with permits and do whatever we could to make this a success.
12. Wide of people dancing at ribbon cutting ceremony
13. Medium of people dancing
14. Wide of band playing
15. Wide overhead of people on pier
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Pamela Ulich, Malibu mayor:
If you look at this, this is original. A lot of this work, but you have some of the new buildings at the end so we tried to keep the old, the history alive and work with state parks independent concessionaries to help fund this but make it public, make it free have fishing so it's a beautiful place and we work to keep it kind of to the original look. They way it used to be to reflect that.

19. Wide of Zuma Jay surfboards shop
20. SOUNDBITE (English) Jefferson Wagner Zuma Jay, Manager of Malibu pier:
Originally the pier was just one single extension out about several hundred feet and it was a wharf for fishing and for trading goods and services that could be done through the pier because there was no Pacific Coast Highway so the pier was the asset at the time. In time it developed to become more of a public access in which it was expanded so that we had buildings on it and restraints at one time there was a gas station so those facilities are now on the pier.
21. Old photo of pier in fifties
22. Photo of sunbathers in fifties
23. SOUNDBITE (English) Jefferson Wagner Zuma Jay, Manager of Malibu pier:
They'll get a quick history on the pier about the pier. They'll be able to experience something from the forties and the fifties. It was used in a lot of films, some people may recognise it in some old films and then for today's perspective they're going to have the ability to have some pretty decent food, a drink. They can go fishing. they can rent equipment. It's a full service pier now.
24. Set up Claudia Taylor, Malibu born resident
25. SOUNDBITE (English) Claudia Taylor, Malibu born resident
We're from Malibu. We were raised here. I've lived her since 1962. I've lived all up and down the coast. Alice's was a great memory to us but this is another wonderful reincarnation and to sit here and watch where we actually surf each and everyday. My daughter surfs. My husband surfs. We paddleboard. My lawyer lives three doors next door. We're here and it's alive again.

They're going to get a true southern California experience. I think the sun, the nature, the people, the generosity of the people and especially three locals. I think the locals have been waiting for this pier to be as special as it is for those who have lived here a long time and have grown up on the pier when they were children I think for many people who live outside of Malibu and Santa Monica and Los Angeles. I think that's the excitement that they can relive their childhood with their children and their grandchildren.

USA: MALIBU: BEACH MADE FAMOUS BY BAYWATCH IS BLACKLISTED
English/Nat
The beach made famous by the popular Baywatch TV-series has been blacklisted.
Considered one of the world's best surf beaches, the beach at Malibu faces closure to the public because of the untreated sewage spewing into the bay.
The pollution has been making surfers and swimmers ill - even so, they have been shocked by the news that a scientific study has called for the shutdown of the beach.
Bodies, surfboards and suntans - these famous sights at Surfrider beach in Malibu are just what you would expect from a California postcard or an episode of Baywatch.
The popular beachside TV series is filmed here, giving the world a glimpse of southern California's beach culture.
But there is something out here that even the real Baywatch patrol can do little about - and it's making swimmers and surfers angry.
SOUNDBITE:
I've had ear infections and sore throats all the time. Two days after surfing you get it. It's awful.
SUPER CAPTION: Poppy Deanda, Surfer
SOUNDBITE:
Diarrhoea, ears and throat, eye problems. One person I know of had hepatitis as a result of all this. That was traced directly to the water here.
SUPER CAPTION: Cary Weiss, Surfer and activist
SOUNDBITE:
The pollution runs straight into the ocean here so it screws everything up, so yeah, it's
a big problem.
SUPER CAPTION: Brian Horowitz, Surfer
The environmental group Heal the Bay recently conducted a study in cooperation with Los Angeles county to find out just how polluted the beaches around LA are.
They found several popular beaches contaminated enough to endanger health.
SOUNDBITE:
Now the Beach Report Card identifies areas like Surfrider Beach, Will Rogers Beach, Santa Monica Pier, Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey and Cabrillo Beach. These are the locations that will make people sick and these are the locations that people should avoid.
SUPER CAPTION: Roger Gorke, Heal the Bay scientist
The team traced the Surfrider beach problem, in part, to the rich and famous tucked away in their exclusive Malibu homes.
Many use septic tanks for sewage.
And the waste from the (m) million-dollar homes makes its way to the sea - and into the bodies of swimmers and surfers.
SOUNDBITE:
The powers that be, the people that live out in the colony there, have septic tanks that leak into the lagoon. Couple of weeks ago we had raw sewage floating out in the water, in the line-up. This is probably the premiere point break in the US, if not the world and its a great place to be and surf.
SUPER CAPTION: Cary Weiss, Surfer and activist
SOUNDBITE:
I think you are going to find that the immune systems of surfers have probably been compromised at this point because of habitual exposure.
SUPER CAPTION: Mark Gold, Heal the Bay scientist
Activists have been pushing the county to stop using untreated storm drain outlets.
Officials say they are aware of the problem but it will take time to fix.
They say that most of the water off the Los Angeles coast is safe for swimming.
Despite being aware of the problems, many surfers refuse to leave Surfrider beach.
SOUNDBITE:
Why not, its a great wave. If we can get this water cleaned up then we should do it but until then I'm not going to stop surfing here.
SUPER CAPTION: Brian Horowitz, Surfer
Warning signs have been placed near the water.
But for surfers - and Baywatch fans - the blacklisted beach will remain one of the Golden State's finest.

The family-friendly Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa features five resort pools, a five-acre waterpark, a flow-rider surf simulator. If you’re interested in making a splash at their amazing resort pools, summer time offers the best room rates at under $200 a night.
