America's Independence! St. Pete Beach Florida Summer Vacation
St. Pete Beach Florida is a beautiful location to celebrate this wonderful holiday. Special thanks to everyone for coming out. The storms rolled in later in the day but we hunkered down and waited them out. The rain gave way to one of the most beautiful sunsets of the season. The fireworks show started shortly after dark around 9:10
In 1776 our founding fathers decided we would no longer be under British rule and on July 4th John Adams Wrote a letter to his wife Abigail: Today will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. So far he was right.
Lakhta Center. Multifunctional Building
Tower of the public and business Lakhta Center is the symbol of new St Petersburg. It is very spectacular, but the complex wouldn’t be so harmonious without the multifunctional building. It’s become the second architectural dominant, not vertical but horizontal. MFB looks like open hands. It is the carefully calculated balance between the vertical and horizontal lines that creates the unique harmony in the architecture of the entire complex.
MFB is more complicated structurally than Tower. Its northern and southern wings rise to the sky like two waves in the Gulf of Finland. The smooth facades with negative slope angles, the building height changing from 7 to 17 floors, the complex shape of the roof, all conspire to make MFB look as if it was light and aery. But the total weight of all steel structures of MFB is comparable to the weight of an ocean cruise liner at about 24 thousand tones.
The Multifunctional Building is more complex than the Tower not just in terms of design. It offers far more functions: there are spaces for various events, sports, recreation, education, restaurants and cafes.
The North and South Blocks are connected by bridges that serve as observation decks. In its southern part all kinds of the most unusual expositions and performances can be organized. And the most spectacular facility in the main pedestrian gallery is the planetarium sphere.
It is an 18-meter metal sphere, three quarters of which are plunged in the glass facade. The sphere is made up of polished stainless steel triangles that are installed in a pipe frame which sits on a load bearing concrete structure. However, the carefully thought-out design solutions give the impression that the planetarium sphere is floating on air. The planetarium will become part of the scientific and educational centre, a modern high tech space open to the public.
The complex also includes a health centre, a restaurant area and a small retail gallery. The sports centre is not only a gym for doing exercise; it also provides a spectacular view of the Gulf of Finland from the swimming pool.
Given this range of capabilities Lakhta Center will undoubtedly become a new truly multifunctional centre of gravity. It is a whole city where anyone can find something to do, capable of welcoming and wowing up to one million St Petersburg residents and visitors every year.

2x AMAZING! Old 1967 (rd Classic KONE early 1980s) T Elevs/Ls@AZIMUT Hotel***, Saint-Petersburg, RUS
There are 11 passenger elevators elevators inside the 3-star Azimut Hotel St Petersburg (former Sovetskaya hotel built in 1967) with about 1020 rooms. Out of the 11 elevators, 4 have been replaced by OTIS in 2008 and 2012 (18 floors), 2 have been replaced by KONE in 2003 (18 floors) and 5 elevators have been replaced by KONE in the early 1980s and haven't been modernized since then! (5-6 floors). The old classic elevators have been published on 8.August.
Here are the links to all the passenger elevators at the hotel:

(1967 replaced by KONE, with Delta fixtures in 2003)
(A group of two elevators from 1967, replaced by KONE with classic fixtures in the late 1970s or early 80s!)
(A group of three elevators from 1967, replaced by KONE with classic fixtures in the late 1970s or early 80s!)
This is filming two of the 5 amazing old elevators replaced by KONE with classic fixtures in the early 1980s (still about a decade before the fall of the Soviet Union!)
Location: AZIMUT Hotel St Petersburg*** (former Sovetskaya Hotel), Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Brand: Unknown
Replaced by: KONE
Type: Traction
Year installed/replaced: 1967 / late 1970s or early 1980s (~1978-84)
Floors served: 5 (*1*, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Serial: 014513 (left) & 014514 (right)
Capacity: 6 persons or 500 kg
Note: These two (out of five) elevators were replaced when this hotel was still known as the Sovetskaya Hotel and the city was called Leningrad, about a decade before the fall of the Soviet Union. This is really amazing, a great find, and everything is still completely original (only the cabs look refurbished) since the late 70s or early 80s (white buttons, lamp indicators, acoustic chimes, gray bumpers and awesome sounds from the machine room!). Totally recommended!

AMAZING 1988 KONE M Traction Elevator/Lift@Rocco Forte Astoria Hotel*****, Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Hotel Astoria (Russian: гости́ница «Асто́рия») is a five-star hotel in Saint Petersburg, Russia that first opened in December 1912. It has 213 bedrooms, including 52 suites and is located on Saint Isaac's Square, next to Saint Isaac's Cathedral and across from the historic Imperial German Embassy. Hotel Astoria, along with its neighboring sister hotel, Angleterre Hotel, is owned and managed by Rocco Forte Hotels and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel underwent a complete refurbishment in 2002.
The Astoria was commissioned in 1910 by the Palace Hotel Company, based in the UK, which owned the land. It was designed by Russo-Swedish architect Fyodor Lidval, who developed a style based on Art Nouveau and also influenced by neoclassicism, and was constructed by the German firm of Wais and Freitag. It was built to host tourists visiting Russia for the Romanov tercentenary, a huge celebration of 300 years of Russian royal rule in May 1913. It opened on December 23, 1912.
The luxurious hotel was used during the celebrations to house guests of the royal family, and was afterwards popular with the aristocracy. Rasputin was said to stay there with some of his married lovers.
The Astoria soon proved such a success that the neighboring Angleterre Hotel was set for demolition for a huge expansion of the Astoria designed by Lidval, mirroring the existing building. However the outbreak of World War I prevented this.
After the Russian Revolution, the Hotel Astoria housed members of the Communist Party. Lenin spoke from its balcony in 1919. During World War II, the hotel served as a field hospital during the Siege of Leningrad. Adolf Hitler reportedly planned to hold a victory banquet in the hotel's Winter Garden. He was so convinced Leningrad would fall quickly that invitations to the event were printed in advance.
The hotel was managed by the state-run Intourist group during the Soviet period, until it closed in 1987 for renovations. It reopened in 1989, completely restored. Rocco Forte Hotels purchased the hotel in December 1997 and spent $20 million on further renovations. The hotel was again renovated in 2012 for its centennial.
Rocco Forte Hotels also owns and manages the adjacent Angleterre Hotel. It is marketed as the business-class wing of its more luxurious sister, the Astoria. The upper guest room floors of the two hotels are connected. Source: Wikipedia.
This is inside the Astoria Hotel, which is one of the most expensive five-star hotels in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. It includes 3 KONE M 1988 guest elevators, and probably also a staff elevator somewhere. Very beautiful!
