A meteor crashing in Russia's Ural mountains has injured at least 950 people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings.
Most of those hurt, in the Chelyabinsk region where the meteor fell, suffered cuts and bruises but at least 46 remain in hospital.
A fireball streaked through the clear morning sky, followed by loud bangs.
President Vladimir Putin said he thanked God no big fragments had fallen in populated areas.
A large meteor fragment landed in a lake near Chebarkul, a town in Chelyabinsk region.
The meteor's dramatic passing was witnessed in Yekaterinburg, 200km (125 miles) to the north, and in Kazakhstan, to the south.

A huge line of smoke, like you get from a plane but many times bigger
Sergei Serskov
Chelyabinsk resident
Eyewitness accounts
It was quite extraordinary, Chelyabinsk resident Polina Zolotarevskaya told BBC News. We saw a very bright light and then there was a kind of a track, white and yellow in the sky.
The explosion was so strong that some windows in our building and in the buildings that are across the road and in the city in general, the windows broke.
Officials say a large meteor partially burned up in the lower atmosphere, resulting in fragments falling earthwards.
Thousands of rescue workers have been dispatched to the area to provide help to the injured, the emergencies ministry said.
The Chelyabinsk region, about 1,500km (930 miles) east of Moscow, is home to many factories, a nuclear power plant and the Mayak atomic waste storage and treatment centre.
'Blinding
Chelyabinsk's health department said 985 people had sought medical treatment, including 204 children, Russia's Interfax news agency reports. Two people in the town of Kopeysk were in a serious condition, it added.
The governor of Chelyabinsk region, Mikhail Yurevich, was quoted elsewhere as saying 950 people had been hurt, two seriously.

Asteroids, meteors and meteorites
Asteroids are small bodies that orbit the Sun as the Earth does
Larger asteroids are called planetoids or minor planets, smaller ones often called meteoroids
Once any of these enters our planet's atmosphere, it becomes a meteor
Many meteors break into pieces or burn up entirely as they speed through the atmosphere
Once meteors or fragments actually impact the surface, they become meteorites
Q&A: Asteroid impacts
Can we know about every rock?
Mr Putin promised immediate aid for people affected, saying kindergartens and schools had been damaged, and work disrupted at industrial enterprises.
Many children were at lessons when the meteor fell at around 09:20 (03:20 GMT).
Video posted online showed frightened, screaming youngsters at one Chelyabinsk school, where corridors were littered with broken glass.
Chelyabinsk resident Sergei Serskov told BBC News the city had felt like a war zone for 20 to 30 minutes.
I was in the office when suddenly I saw a really bright flash in the window in front of me, he said.
Then I smelt fumes. I looked out the window and saw a huge line of smoke, like you get from a plane but many times bigger.
A few minutes later the window suddenly came open and there was a huge explosion, followed by lots of little explosions.
In Yekaterinburg, 36-year-old resident Viktor Prokofiev was driving to work when he witnessed the event.
It was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day, he was quoted by Reuters as saying.
I felt like I was blinded by headlights.
Debris also reportedly fell on the west Siberian region of Tyumen.
Governor Yurevich reported that the meteor had landed in a lake 1km outside Chebarkul, which has a population of 46,000.
A Russian army spokesman said a crater 6m (20ft) wide had been found on the shore of the lake.
Russia: New amphibious all-terrain truck swaps swamps for snow piles
A unique model of the amphibious all-terrain vehicle TGM-126 which combines the qualities of a civil car with the abilities of an extreme off-road truck, was tested outside the city of Miass, Chelyabinsk Oblast on Wednesday.
Designed and produced as an exclusive“ model by Ural Spets Mash the vehicle can float and ride through swamps, despite its massive weight and size and can navigate unstable grounds carrying up to ten passengers.
Artem Krasnov, Ural Spets Mash spokesperson (Russian): [We] decided to create a vehicle that would have all the qualities of a normal civil car such as good visibility, improved ergonomics and a large body space. So this is actually how this vehicle was created. It combines advantages of an off-road vehicle and a civil truck.
Artem Krasnov, Ural Spets Mash spokesperson (Russian): It is a multifunctional vehicle. It is used in the first place by lovers of extreme outdoors hunting or fishing. It can ride through swamps, unstable grounds; it can even float despite vehicle's huge size and that's really important. Moreover, it is used for good purposes, for example, it provides services to Russia's Far North full of impassable places where only such type of vehicles can operate in fields like oil and gas, geological exploration, as well as search and rescue operations. It can be used where an extreme cross-country ability is required.
Artem Krasnov, Ural Spets Mash spokesperson (Russian): This vehicle is really unique. It was developed according to the company's own project so that is why it's an exclusive [model].

Meteor cover mysteriously levitates by itself in Russian museum
The dome covering the meteorite in South Ural State Historical Museum spontaneously begins to levitate before freezing at a height of about 10 cm. We do not believe in mysticism. However the twin brother of the Chelyabinsk meteorite flew near the Earth recently… Coincidence?

Chelyabinsk region in 1950
Chelyabinsk Oblast is located in the southern Ural mountains region of Russia and is on the border of Europe and Asia.
During the 1930s, the regional economy and industrial output grew as Chelyabinsk Oblast became a key focus of the first Five-Year Plans. Key factories and enterprises that formed the core of the modern Chelyabinsk economy, including the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant and the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, were founded at this time. The economy continued to grow with the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, as industries were evacuated from the western parts of the Soviet Union to Ural, and Chelyabinsk Oblast in particular.
During the war, Magnitogorsk alone produced one third of all Soviet steel, while the city of Chelyabinsk became the main centre of Soviet tank production, earning the nickname Tankograd (Tank City)........

Massive meteorite chunk recovered in Russia from Lake Cherbarkul
Subscribe to ITN News:
A massive piece of meteorite has been recovered from Lake Cherbakul in Russia. It is the biggest fragment of space rock found after the meteorite exploded over the Ural Mountains in February. Scientists hope further tests will confirm their theories, but say some features indicate the more than 570 kilogrammes-heavy object is really the main part of the meteor.
Around 400 fragments were found in a two-day search of the area in February. All fragments have been sent to the university research centre 'Nanotekh for further research. The US space agency NASA estimated the meteor was 55 feet across before entering Earth's atmosphere and weighed about 10,000 tons. The main fireball streaked across the sky at a speed of about 19 miles per second, according to Russian space agency Roscosmos, before crashing into the snowy wastes. Report by Ashley Fudge.
