SECRETS OF THE STATES - TENNESSEE
Dennis Daily salutes each of the 50 states in a 50-day series of one-minute radio reports. Today he looks at a little-known aspect of TENNESSEE.
Old Grist Mills - Gresham's or Sixes Mill- Old Brick Mill
Gresham's or Sixes Mill
Located on Sixes Rd about 2/10 mile west of I-575. This is on private property and you can only take pictures through a fence.
The mill at Sixes has a history as long as north Georgia itself. Before the Land Lottery of 1832 divided the Cherokee Nation up to land-greedy Georgians, a group of men lived in the area and worked in relative secracy, perhaps for ten years or more. The area is known for its gold vein (part of the vein that created the Georgia Gold Rush in 1829).
This was also a military removal encampment for the Georgia Militia during the Trail of Tears in 1838. The current mill in this area, called by many names, was built originally in 1820 by gold prospectors and rebuilt in 1878 and 1880.
Although Cherokee County was originally organized in 1830, by that time gold mines were attracting settlers from the east. Sixes Mine, on the site of present-day Sixes Mill, was one of the first in the area. The gold from this mine was noted as some of the purest in the state. In fact, according to White's 1849 statistical abstract it was second only to the gold found in Carroll County. Other mining operations were in production along the Etowah River (Franklin Gold Mine) and the Little River.
Old Brick Mill in Lindale, GA
According to the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Brick Mill is also known as Jones Mill, Hoss Mill, Silver Creek Mill, and Folly Mill. It was listed on the Register in 1993.
A History of Rome and Floyd County, State of Georgia, United States of America By George Magruder Battey provides the following information:
One of the most picturesque in the county is on Silver Creek at Lindale. It was known in the old days as Hoss' mill; it has a large metal wheel which turns no more; water was carried to it in a race from the high ground. It was destroyed by the Northern troops during the war, and rebuilt by the owner, Capt. Jacob H. Hoss. For a time it was known as Barnett's mill.

Fishing Trout Streams @ MWR, Clarksville TN (Beaver Video)
MWR is part of the military base at Fort Campbell KY, but it is partially open to the public with strict guidelines. It is just outside gate 10 of the base, and is often patrolled by city police, military police, and soldiers. I have often been out fishing and officers will appear in the most remote areas when I am out wading the creeks. Weapons are not allowed since it is part of the base, but the area is pretty secure.
Required Permits include:
(1) MWR permit,
(2) TN Fishing permit, and
(3) a trout stamp.
They total about $75 - $80 altogether, and are good for a year.
You must stop at the MWR office each day to get paperwork for each stream you will be fishing. You are allowed to fish three locations each visit. You are not allowed out of your vehicle, except in the locations that you have registered paperwork for that day..
Trout see really well and scare really easily. That is why most ppl fish alone, or they split up. If you are new to trout fishing, you will want to scope out a cpl different spots in the same stream. Fish a while in one spot, and then switch back and forth to the other spot. That allows the water to calm down and puts the trout at ease again. Otherwise they will leave for a more quiet spot, or hunker down somewhere and stop biting.
I recommend getting a short handle fishing net with a stretch cord and attaching a clip to it. Clip it high on your waist when you are on the move.. and then let it down to hang ready if you need it.
Trout are fun to catch because they are evasive, and tremendous fighters if you catch one. They strike hard and sudden, and get off the hook with great ease. Be ready to lose several, lol. I won't fish without my net. I know ppl who prefer to take their chances of throwing them up on the bank.. but they lose several every time we fish =)
Trout have small mouths, so use small hooks. I like to use a #8. A #6 is a little larger, so I will opt for that if I know the fish in that creek are a little larger. You will never catch trout if you use a bobber, so don't. I have caught them using light shot sinkers, and letting the line move with the current. I have also used a heavy shot to slow it down or to hold it in one spot. It just depends on the creek and how the fish decide to bite that day.
Take lots of tackle.. hooks and shot sinkers. Have plenty of line on your reel. Be ready to lose it ALOT, and to restring your tackle every cpl of casts because trout like to hunker down in rocky bogged up low spots where the current is strong. If you are gonna get in there where they are, you are gonna have to be ready to lose alot of tackle. IT WILL GET FRUSTRATING, but it is just part of trout fishing.. embrace it.
In warmer weather.. If you can keep a cooler of ice handy, that is the best way to keep them fresh if you will be fishing most of the day. I use the metal clip stringer when I am gonna be a short bit, and then I move them to a cooler. Otherwise the stringers cause them to die faster, which is not a great idea if you are planning to fish most of the day.
I know ppl who use power bait, crickets, the really tiny MARTEN lures, and worms. Everyone swears by what they use. I recommend using several and deciding what you have the most luck with at each stream.
There are brown and rainbow stocked in the streams all thru this area.. the browns are more difficult to catch, fight harder, and fewer are stocked. There has been some cross breeding as well.. so some will have the dark dots of a brown and the hint of a rainbow stripe on their side. Last I heard they were talking about giving them a name of their own.. but nothing official that I know of.
Hope something I have said is helpful.. Have fun!
