Interesting facts about Mida Creek:
The Mida Creek is a tidal inlet that expands across a large area and comprises of different types of habitats that are influenced by the tide, eg mangrove forests, mud and sand flats, and open shallow waters.
Mida Creek is a very productive mangrove ecosystems and is a recognized International Bird Area and together with Arabuko-Sokoke Forest forms a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is a paradise for national waterfowls. The migrating birds from Europe and Eurasia find a place to rest during their journey, while some choose to stay at Mida Creek to over-winter.
The Creek and its mangrove channels are important feeding and breeding grounds for many species of fish species including Jacks, Snappers, Groupers, Rabbit Fish, Parrotfish, Emperors, and Barracuda.
Equally varied in numbers and distribution is the aquatic flora of Mida Creek. 11 seagrass and 33 seaweed species are found here alongside 9 species of mangrove. Both sea grasses and mangroves serve to trap sediments - benefiting local coral reefs and provide an important habitat for many marine species.
The mud/sand flats are feeding and resting grounds for large populations of around 65 species of aquatic birds; some resident, others local or seasonal distant migrants. Mida Creek is an important passage and wintering area for Palaearctic migrant waders. Counts of over 6,000 waders have been made on Mida Creek including seven species which are regionally threatened. The mangroves around the edge of the creek are also important roosting places.
Interesting facts about the Arabuko Forest
With a size of 420 km2 Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is the largest remaining section of dry coastal forest found in Eastern and Southern Africa. It is a unique habitat characterized by an enormous array of flora and fauna.
It is a key site for the global survival of six bird species and three mammal species including the elehant shrew.
The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Guides Association has several expert guides who can accompany you on your forest walks. They are expert ornithologists and can help visitors find and see some of the rare and unique birds of the forest.
Over 260 species of birds have been recorded in the forest including the six globally threatened ones:
- Sokoke Scops Owl,
- Sokoke Pipit,
- East Coast Akalat,
- Spotted Ground Thrush,
- Amani Sunbird and
- Clarke's Weaver.
Many of these are found and observed regularly by visitors.
For those less keen on twitching and ornithology the forest is also lovely for a walk, and exciting too, considering there is a resident herd of elephant and buffalo! If you are generally interested in nature or like hiking, biking and camping, Arabuko-Sokoke is a good destination for you.
