Norwottuck Rail Trail ????, Massachusetts
Beautiful 21.8 mile round trip bike ride from Northampton through Hadley and Amherst Massachusetts on the Norwottuck Rail Trail which is part of the Bay State Greenway.
Iris and I enjoyed this trail very much ... so much in fact, we would like to do this trail again during leaf peeping season this Fall.
The trail is well maintained, mostly flat with some minor elevations (perfect for us), completely paved with excellent rest stop / break areas.
We also enjoyed the stone markings identifying the wildlife in the area as well as the many vistas and farm views.
Definitely ranks #1 out of the 4 trails we have ridden thus far this year.

Not in Worcester. Over the past year or so I've seen more and more bikes painted on the road. As an experienced motorest, pedestrian, and cyclest I can say with authority that pianting a bike in the middle of the road does not a bike path make.

Bechertown to Northampton by bike on the Norwottuck Rail Trail
I rode my bike from Belchertown, MA, to Northampton, MA, on the Norwottuck Rail Trail today. The ride was 11 miles, and took about 60 minutes. It was about 70 F (21 C). It was a very nice day for a ride.
Norwottuck Rail Trail, is a 11-mile (18 km) combination bicycle/pedestrian paved right-of-way running from Belchertown, Massachusetts, through Amherst and Hadley, to Northampton, Massachusetts. It opened in 1992, and is now part of the longer Mass Central Rail Trail.
The trail was originally a train line which opened in 1887 under the control of the Central Massachusetts Railroad. It was later leased by the Boston and Maine Railroad and referred to as the Central Massachusetts Branch. Three round trip passenger trains were run in the 1920s, as well as numerous freight trains. Competition from cars and trucks caused a decline on the line, as passenger service was discontinued in 1932 and freight service managed to hang on for another forty-two years, primarily to deliver goods to a farmer's supply warehouse in Amherst.
The rail bed was acquired by the state in 1985 and developed into the trail in 1993, as its current name.

Whitinsville, Massachusetts: Visiting my Hometown
I grew up in Whitinsville, an historic industrial revolution era town in the Blackstone Valley, near Boston — and moved away as a young adult in 1975. These photos are from a visit to my origins in October, 2013 with my partner. They include my schools (St. Patrick's elementary, NHS JR/SR High, the church I grew up in, St. Patrick's, the 3 houses I lived in, my grandmother's house, and our mill town of duplexes and quads. Grateful to the history and beauty of the Blackstone Valley. Gratitude to Gregg for the visit, and the photos.
Northampton Bike Bridge
Manhan Rail Trail Construction: This new section of the Manhan Rail Trail starts at Ferry Street in Easthampton and ends at Earle Street in Northampton, for a total length of approximately 2.6 miles. The Manhan Rail Trail project is an important link in an expanding regional trail system, providing connections with trails in Northampton and to the Norwottuck Trail, which serves Northampton, Hadley, Amherst (with the Swift Bikeway connector to the UMass Amherst Campus), and Belchertown. The Trail is also an important component of the Bay State Greenway (BSG). The Manhan Rail Trail links two vital urban centers, Easthampton and Northampton, with their many businesses, transit connections, and residential areas. This trail is exemplifies MassDOT's GreenDOT Policy, with its emphasis on improving healthy transportation: bicycling, walking and transit.

W. Boylston: Hiking the Mass. Central Rail Trail: West Boylston Section

This adventure is hiking the roughly 3 mile stretch of the Mass. Central Rail Trail, the West Boylston section, West Boylston/Holden Massachusetts.
Along the way, we get to see Masachusett's tallest overpass system, standing over 70 feet (22.34m) above the ground. Not to be confused with bonifide bridges that do stand taller.
Past the midway point on the Holden side of the stretch is where an old mill and tenement housing once stood during end of the industrial revolution, with several foundation holes for the homes and the mill. Some in good shape, others not-so-much.
We end at the Holden parking lot, and called it a video.
