Welcome to NYC. Planning a trip to the five boroughs can be part of the fun, but there’s also a lot of ground to cover—how to get here, what to expect from the weather, how to hail a taxi and much more.
New York City is composed of five boroughs. While Manhattan and Staten Island are islands, Brooklyn and Queens are geographically part of Long Island, and the Bronx is attached to the US mainland. The islands are linked by bridges, tunnels and ferries.
Manhattan is 13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide at its widest. Except at its northern and southern tips, the borough's avenues run roughly north and south, and streets run east and west. One-way thoroughfares are common, with traffic moving east on even-numbered streets and west on odd-numbered streets. Fifth Avenue divides the island into east and west sides (for example, locations on 57th Street west of Fifth Avenue are designated W. 57th St., and east of Fifth Avenue, they're E. 57th St.). As you move farther east or west from Fifth Avenue, street addresses increase, usually in increments of 100 from one block to the next. For north-south avenues, 20 blocks equals a mile, and the street numbers increase as you go uptown. Blocks can be a useful measure of distance, but keep in mind your direction: walking uptown from 1st Street to 6th Street is about a quarter of a mile, but walking the same number of blocks crosstown, from First Avenue to Sixth Avenue, is approximately a mile.

New York continues to be one of the world’s most famous cities, a true world metropolis and major symbol of the American Dream. Manhattan Island is the city’s most well known district and the Rockefeller Center in Midtown is often referred to as the heart of the New York. Nearby the Roman Catholic Saint Patrick´s Cathedral is the largest and most magnificent church in the United States. The Grand Central Terminal divides Park Avenue and is a huge station with which the railroad kings, the Venderbilts, left an indelible mark. The huge hall, with its magnificent vaulted ceiling in Beaux Arts style, has been the city’s central railway station for twelve lines since 1913. The confines of Chinatown are inhabited by a hundred and fifty thousand Chinese from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, most of whom are unable to speak a word of English. Chinese characters wherever one looks and restaurants and Asian stores on every street corner. The famous Wall Street was named after a wall which in the early days protected the growing city against attack by Native American Indians. However, the roots of its subsequent claim to fame were laid in 1792. The young state desperately needed investment and therefore the powers that be decided to issue bonds. Close by, on a small island, is New York’s most famous landmark, the Statue Of Liberty. The head of Lady Liberty leads to the crown from which there are stunning views from several windows. New York City is most certainly unique. A city that’s very much alive and kicking, self-confident and always a surprise!

The Big Apple and the Empire State are the focus of the 1950s travel film, “New York.” It opens with scenes of skyscrapers and bustling streets as the narrator explains how they are symbols of a great metropolis. Some of them famous around the world — such as the Waldorf-Astoria (mark 01:03) or Grand Central Station (mark 01:20). The film proclaims NYC as a mix of new and old, and we see scenes from an art show in Greenwich Village (mark 01:55) and St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery in the East Village (mark 02:25), which was consecrated in 1799. From here we go to Radio City (mark 03:07) and its outdoor skating rink and look at Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Heading Uptown, the film shows us Columbia University (mark 04:20) and the tomb of US President Ulysses S. Grant (mark 04:49). There is a ticker tape parade on Broadway and we view the neon lights of Broadway and Time Square before viewing the Statue of Liberty (mark 05:45) in New York Harbor and city’s many bridges and tunnels. There are several scenes of visitors enjoying all that Long Island has to offer before visiting the Hudson River (mark 11:35) and the United States Military Academy at West Point (mark 12:09) as cadets march in formation.
Before long the camera shows us Albany, the state capitol, and we learn of all it has to offer before shuffling off to Buffalo (14:10). Moving out of the big cities, there are idyllic views from Whiteface Mountain (mark 16:08) and later Old Fort Niagara (mark 18:25) originally built in 1678. Of course, there are breath-taking scenes from Niagara Falls starting at mark 19:35 as the narrator touts its natural beauty. After boasting of more of the state’s great outdoors, the film takes to the sky at mark 23:32 with a visit to Elmira — “glider capital of the world.” There are many scenes from state parks beginning at mark 24:55 and the Sant Lawrence River (mark 27:00) and the Thousand Islands (mark 27:27) which constitute an archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddle the Canada–US border. Seasons change as the film rolls on and at mark 29:10 shares snowy scenes as visitors ice skate and bobsled at Lake Placid (mark 30:00).

The 1960s Technicolor film by Owen Murphy, “All About New York” takes it viewer through the Big Apple and the Empire State. It opens with a view of the Empire State Building (mark 00:45) in New York City before sharing glimpses of a fisherman at Montauk Point, the Catskills, Coney Island, Lake Placid, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the United Nations, and Times Square. “New York can be many things,” the narrator assures the viewer, before touching on the state’s history and the roles of such explorers as Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain. Next is an aerial view of New York Harbor (mark 02:52) and a look at Manhattan, followed with a visit to Fort Ticonderoga (mark 04:22), as the narrator explains its importance to the region. Villages, towns, and cities began to grow in the area, the narrators tells us, as he explains how the Erie Canal, completed in 1825, helped transport goods between Buffalo and Albany (mark 06:21) and opened new avenues of prosperity. That was followed by the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad (mark 07:15), the first railroad built in the state and one of the first in the country. From there the film takes on a series of factory and manufacturing scenes promoting industry in the state that eventually grew into vast industrial centers (mark 09:00) and brought skilled laborers to New York. The screens flashes upon various trades including rug makers, silversmiths, glass makers, and fashion designers while the narrators praises each career. There is a visit to a “modern” food processing plant (mark 12:49) in Canajoharie, New York, and scenes of men and women working with everything from copper to leather to telephones. The film shows rows of telephone operators and military officers huddled around radar screens as the narrators explains such communication devices are made throughout the state, and how “IBM electronic wonders” are changing the face of industry (mark 15:52). “It’s understandable why New York became the industrial leader of the nation,” says the narrator, partly due to the high wages available in the state. Gigantic cargo ships fill the screen starting at mark 17:08 and we learn of New York as an import and export hub and NYC as a financial center following scenes from the New York Stock Exchange (mark 18:10). The camera pans the city skyline starting at mark 19:00 — a sight most people think of when New York is mentioned — then moves to apple orchards and dairy forms as well as many of the state’s scenic wonders like Seneca Lake (mark 22:12), Genesee River Gorge (mark 22:21), and Niagara Falls (mark 22:37). From grade schools to universities, the film touches on the many learning opportunities in the state, including Fordham University, Hamilton College, and the United States Military Academy West Point. The film nears its end with a look at New Yorkers visiting their respective places of worship, “where they find strength with the faith of their choice.”

Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with 469 stations in operation. Little Italy (Italian: Piccola Italia) is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, once known for its large population of Italian Americans. Today the neighborhood consists of only a few Italian stores and restaurants. It is bounded on the west by Tribeca and Soho, on the south by Chinatown, on the east by the Bowery and Lower East Side, and on the north by Nolita.
Little Italy on Mulberry Street used to extend as far south as Worth Street, as far north as Houston Street, as far west as Lafayette Street, and as far east as Bowery. It is now only three blocks on Mulberry Street. Little Italy originated as Mulberry Bend. Jacob Riis described Mulberry Bend as the foul core of New York's slums. During this time period Immigrants of the late 19th century usually settled in ethnic neighborhoods. Therefore, the mass immigration from Italy during the 1880's led to the large settlement of Italian immigrants in lower Manhattan. The results of such migration had created an influx of Italian immigrants which had led to the commercial gathering of their dwelling and business.
Bill Tonelli from New York magazine said, Once, Little Italy was like an insular Neapolitan village re-created on these shores, with its own language, customs, and financial and cultural institutions. Little Italy was not the largest Italian neighborhood in New York City, as East Harlem (or Italian Harlem) had a larger Italian population. Tonelli said that Little Italy was perhaps the city's poorest Italian neighborhood. In 1910 Little Italy had almost 10,000 Italians; that was the peak of the community's Italian population. At the turn of the 20th century over 90% of the residents of the Fourteenth Ward were of Italian birth or origins. Tonnelli said that it meant that residents began moving out to more spacious digs almost as soon as they arrived. Such a vastly growing community impacted the U.S. labor movement in the 20th century by making up much of the labor population in the garment industry.
After World War II, many residents of the Lower East Side began moving to Brooklyn, Staten Island, eastern Long Island, and New Jersey. Chinese immigrants became an increased presence after the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965 removed immigration restrictions, and the Manhattan Chinatown to Little Italy's south expanded. In 2004, Tonelli said, You can go back 30 years and find newspaper clips chronicling the expansion of Chinatown and mourning the loss of Little Italy.

Thousands of people welcomed the new year in New York City at Time Square where they counted down till the ball drop at midnight. This year's ball drop ceremony was led by journalists from various news organizations in the United States.

On Day 30 of my Round The World Trip for Food my wife and I decided to make a food trek to Brooklyn to eat one of the best pizzas in New York City. The pizza restaurant: Di Fara Pizza. We then went to Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine to eat some fantastic Trinidad cuisine. It was another good day of food in New York City.
1:35 Di Fara Pizza - When you do any kind of searching for the best pizza in New York City, it won’t take you long to find Di Fara Pizza, a family run restaurant in Brooklyn known for their incredible pizza. Also, when I went to NYC, many of you recommended that I needed to try Di Fara, so I decided that a pilgrimage was must. I arrived before they opened for lunch, and was first in line. I was a little torn as what to order, but finally just went with the classic round pie with half pepperoni and half cheese. The pizza took about 15 minutes to make and it came out of the oven hot and fresh. As soon as it came out, he chopped on some fresh basil. That first slice of pizza I had was one of the best pieces of pizza I’ve ever had. Everything tasted so pure and so balanced. The crust was right, the sauce and cheese were perfect. All the ingredients they use to make their pizza at Di Fara are from Italy, and so that’s part of the reason their pizza is so expensive. Is it the best pizza in New York City? I’m not really qualified to answer this as I haven’t been to all the famous pizza places in NYC. But what I can say is that Di Fara pizza is mind-blowingly good. Pizza price - $31
9:45 Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine - After finishing the pizza we moved on to Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine, a restaurant in Crown Height known for serving Caribbean food and especially mostly Trinidadian food. I decided to order the curry chicken meal while my wife ordered the curry fish meal. Both of the meals were huge and came with sides, rice, and vegetables. The curry chicken and curry fish were both excellent, full of spice flavor. This was my first time to have Trinidadian food, and it’s made me want to go to Trinidad immediately. For excellent Caribbean food in New York City, Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine is a friendly restaurant. Curry chicken meal - $11, Curry fish meal - $13.
And that was basically it for the day. Ying wasn’t feeling too well, so we headed back to our hotel and rested. It was another great day of food in New York City!

Greenwich Village is a small area below 14th Street and west of Broadway. It is famous to have been the home to rebels, nonconformists, beatniks, bohemians and starving artists for over 100 years now. New York Habitat ( ) offers features today a video tour of this great area.

Starting in the late 1800s, Greenwich Village became the epicenter of art and music in New York. Artists and musicians from all over flocked to the Village where they found camaraderie, inspiration and affordable housing. The paths of many famous musicians' writers and actors passed through the eclectic streets of Greenwich Village including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Allen Poe, and Mark Twain.
Washington Square Park:
A great place to start our tour of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park. It is home of the famous Washington Square Arch, which was built in the late 1800s to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States.
The interesting thing about Greenwich Village is that the starving artists were the ones who brought charm and appeal to the area. Ultimately the very appeal they created started attracting wealthier New Yorkers, which drove the prices up and, eventually, caused most starving artists to relocate elsewhere in the city.
Luckily, the charm remains strong in the Village and it's a great place to rent a furnished apartment during your next trip to New York. New York Habitat has tons of apartments throughout the Village and all over New York City.

Cafe Wha? - at 115 Macdougal Street
Located at 115 Macdougal Street, Cafe Wha? is a club in Greenwich Village that has been home to various musicians and comedians.
West 4th Street Courts:
At the West 4th Street Courts, also known as The Cage, you will find some of the finest street ball players in the country.
The Speakeasy - 106 Perry Street
In the time of Prohibition back in the 1920's, secret bars known as speakeasies sprung up all over the city. Many were located right here in Greenwich Village. American author Henry Miller opened a short-lived speakeasy in the basement of his home at 106 Perry St.
The Friends Building - 90 Bedford Street
If the names Joey, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe mean anything to you, make sure you visit the corner of Bedford St. & Grove St. in Greenwich Village to pay homage to the Friends' Building. This is the building where the Friends supposedly lived in the hit sitcom we all know and love. In fact, before the producers decided on the title Friends, the working title of the show was Once Upon a Time in the Village.
Narrowest House in NYC -- 75 ½ Bedford St
Coming in at nine and a half feet wide, you'll find the narrowest house in NYC at 75 ½ Bedford St. The Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there for a short while.
