Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers online
This video presents lectures from several scholars of historical digital research delivered at the National Digital Newspaper Program Awardee Conference in September 2013. Ed Ayers, president of the University of Richmond; Ryan Cordell and David Smith of Northeastern University; Ahmed Johnson of the Library of Congress.
The National Digital Newspaper Program is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of Congress, and state projects to provide enhanced access to United States newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. NEH awards support state projects to select and digitize historically significant titles that are aggregated and permanently maintained by the Library of Congress. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers, a prototype of the digital resource being produced through NDNP, is freely available to internet users everywhere. Users may search the digitized pages contributed by funded state projects and LC as well as consult a national newspaper directory of bibliographic and holdings information to identify newspaper titles available in all types of formats. The directory was compiled through an earlier NEH initiative, the United States Newspaper Program.

Ben Carson Says There Are Bigger Problems Than Race in the U.S.
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson toured Ferguson, Missouri on Friday. He was looking into efforts to rebuild the riot-weary St. Louis suburb and offering advice on how to mend racial divisions in the United States. In August of 2014, Ferguson and surrounding communities were thrust into the national spotlight after a white Ferguson policeman shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. On Friday, Carson said he does not see racial issues as being as much of a problem for America as other social problems are--such as education inequities and a breakdown in values.

What is the alt-right?
Everybody has an opinion about it, but nobody seems to know exactly what
it is. So, I took it upon myself to find out.
I took a deep dive into alt-right culture. I read their books, listened to their podcasts, watched their videos, followed their blogs, and spoke personally to their leaders.
Here’s what I learned:
First, they’re really small... like, your high school reunion small. That “big”
national alt-right gathering in Charlottesville, in August 2017? Yeah—that
attracted all of about 600 people...and that’s on the high end of estimates. And that infamous torch rally on the evening of August 11? There were maybe 100 tiki-torch carriers.
But however small it is, the alt-right does have a belief system—a worldview. It’s right there, in their name. The alt in “alt-right” means “alternative.” The alt-right is an alternative to American conservatism.
So, it’s no surprise then that the alt-right has far more in common with the
left—another alternative to conservatism— than it does with the traditional American right.
Let me try to untangle this.
Both the left and the alt-right are obsessed with race and identity politics—the belief that a person’s value is linked to their racial heritage. The left wants special status for racial and ethnic minorities. The alt-right
wants special status for the racial and ethnic majority.
Since America, according to the alt-right, was founded by white Europeans, and was built by white Europeans, it should belong to white Europeans. America’s success, in their view, is a product of race and geography—or, as the alt-right likes to put it, of blood and soil.
So, in the alt-right’s view, the moral ideals of the American Founders—like,
“all men are created equal”— are naive and misguided.
The man who coined the term “alt-right” is a white nationalist named Richard Spencer, who runs alternativeright.com as well as the National Policy Institute, the self-described think tank of the alt-right. According to Spencer, the movement is “dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States.”
Jared Taylor, the editor of the white identity website American Renaissance, holds that, “Any attempt to create a society in which race can be made not to matter will fail.”
Other alt-right leaders include:
Sam Francis, the late syndicated columnist and forefather of the movement who famously called for a “white racial consciousness.”
Theodore Beale, the blogger known as Vox Day, who, in his manifesto, “What is the Alt-Right” cites the white nationalist motto, “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”
And Paul Ramsey, a white nationalist who produced and starred in a video entitled, “Is It Wrong Not to Feel Sad about the Holocaust?”
Another area of agreement between the alt-right and the left is that both ultimately reject God. The alt-right admires Christendom for uniting the European continent, but rejects Christianity for its offer of salvation to all people, irrespective of race. The movement’s favorite philosopher—just like the Nazis of yesteryear—is Friedrich Nietzsche, who famously claimed, “God is dead.”

ObamaNation Billboard Draws Attention
BLUE SPRINGS, Missouri (Kansas City) -- Drivers on Interstate 70 can barely see the billboard but once they do the message has been gaining attention.
The billboard is located along I-70 between the Adams Dairy Parkway and the Grain Valley exits. The billboard reads, How do you like your change now? Obama-Nation. They are coming for you! The Taxpayer. The sign features the hammer and sickle, a symbol of communism
and insinuates that Obama will jeopardize the first and second amendments to the Constitution, which are free speech and the right to keep and bear arms.
People said they might not agree with the sentiment of the sign, but they felt it was a matter of free speech. Others that KCTV5 talked to said it is offensive and should come down.
A pastor who drives by the sign during his daily commute to his church said he lived in England for years and he agreed with the message.
We lived in a socialist society and I guess what I am seeing in America is that we are pushing to some of those ways now, he said. Especially the hospitalization. It's taken away some of our freedoms as Americans.
KCTV5 could not reach the owner of the billboard. The mayor of Blue Springs said his office has gotten calls and e-mails about the sign.
NBC Action News reporter Sloane Heller confirmed late Thursday morning the billboard is owned by William Cody, a metro small business owner. He lives by the stadiums and works in metal fabrication.
He says he isnt necessarily anti-Obama, but is against the policies coming out of the White House.
He calls the Federal Stimulus Package a waste and is equally upset over the bailout of the Big 3 Auto Makers.
Cody says this is his first billboard and he did it to vent. He says, We voted for change and this is the change we got?
Cody says he is working on another sign for the same spot. Its set to go up in December. He wont reveal the content except to say it wont have Obamas name on it.

September 11, 2013
Hosted by, Healthy Rivers Partnership at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater.
The Missouri River is a direct source of drinking water. This month, David Stous will take a peek below the river, at the mysterious and very large quantity of water that flows through the sediments of the Missouri River flood plain. And they’ll look at some the technology used to access this valuable water resource.
David Stous, P.G., P.E. has made a career of exploring the alluvial aquifer of the Missouri River valley for Burns & McDonnell.
