This is a great cycle ride through the lower Manifold Valley, along the former route of the Leek and Manifold Light Railway in Staffordshire’s White Peak area.

Thors Cave Peak District Places to Visit in UK North England
Thor's Cave Peakis a natural cavern located Wetton, Ashbourne DE6 2AF in the Manifold Valley of the White Peak in Staffordshire, England. It is classified as a Karst cave. Located in a steep limestone crag, the cave entrance, a symmetrical arch 7.5 metres wide and 10 metres high, is prominently visible from the valley bottom, around 80 metres (260 feet) below. Reached by an easy stepped path from the Manifold Way, the cave is a popular tourist spot, with views over the Manifold Valley. The second entrance is known as the West Window, below which is a second cave, Thor's Fissure Cavern.
Thor's Cave was served by a railway station on the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway from 1904 to 1934; the disused line now forms the Manifold Way.
This Peak District walk starting from Wetton explores the hills and dales either side of the Manifold Valley. First we visit the rocky tor above Thor’s Cave with views over to Ladyside Wood, Grindon and north along the Manifold Trail to Wetton Mill and beyond. The walk then descends to view Thor’s Cave with its massive 60ft high entrance before descending further to the Manifold Valley Cycle Trail. The River Manifold is often dry here as it sinks down swallow holes reappearing a few miles away at Ilam.

Beautiful Village in the Manifold Valley with what I call 'Gingerbread Houses' that look like they came out of a Hans Christian Anderson story
Ilam is best known as the location of the neo-Gothic Ilam Hall, a stately home built in the 1820s, and now a youth hostel owned by the National Trust. It is set in large parklands that are open to visitors.
Ilam is about 4 miles from Ashbourne at the entrance to the scenic Manifold Valley. Ilam is very picturesque, with its Swiss chalet style houses and matching school house. It also lies close to the popular Dovedale valley.
While most of the buildings in the village are from the past two centuries, Ilam dates from Saxon times or earlier.
It is in the Chapel of St Bertram, built in 1618 by the Meverell, Port and Hurt families, that the remains and shrine of the St Bertram (or Bertelin) can be found. St Bertram was an 8th-century son of a Mercian king who renounced his royal heritage for prayer and meditation after his wife and child were killed by wolves. He is said to have converted many to Christianity, and his shrine became a point of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, it being reputed to be able to work miraculous cures.

Staffordshire canals Bike ride 2. The Leek branch.
Todays ride I took the Trent and Mersey and Caldon Canals to the end of the Leek branch on a blustery day . (Gopro chestcam angles will be fixed) I asked the question do other cyclists listen to music at any point on their rides?. Also an interesting find in the water.

Continuing our short three-clip feature on trains on the Cheshire Lines Committee lines in April 1956 we initially see anotherGCR class D11/1 approaching Mobberley before moving on to Knutsford where the arrival of a Stanier class 4 tank on another rake of crimson liveried multi-door stock reminds us that, though the CLC lines were notable for the presence of Great Central trains, the CLC was itself a combination of ownership by the Great Northern, Great Central and Midland Railways, each owning one-third. Thus through the Grouping years it retained its independence and LMS trains continued to run over its metals, this also continuing in BR days. After we watch a connecting bus depart the Stanier tank leaves under the road bridge.’

Thor's Cave, Manifold Valley, Staffordshire, Lair of the white worm
This is Thor's Cave, Staffordshire, which was named after the old Norse god. Excavations have shown that the cave was occupied as long as 10,000 years ago and this occupation probably continued until Roman or Saxon times, making it one of the oldest sites of human activity in the Peak. Stone tools and the remains of a range now extinct animals were found within the cave.
Most importantly this was used in the filming of Ken Russells 'The Lair of the White Worm

Tissington Trail: Ashbourne to Parsley hay
I decided to record my cycle ride on the Tissington trail from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay.
It had been snowing earlier that day which can be seen getting thicker the further north i cycled. I would advise anyone who is going for a cycle ride in this type of weather to take a pair of gloves with them due to my hands turning blue and numb from the cold.

Peak District Walk - Thor's Cave & Manifold Dale
In this video we head out with the DJI Phantom 4 to visit Thor's Cave in the Staffordshire part of the Peak District. We walked down Manifold Dale from Hulme End and then sent the drone up to battle with the winds of storm Doris. We headed back via Ecton Hill and the old mines.

A Quaint Little Railway (1930)
This short, silent film captures one of Britain's minor little railways: the Leek and Manifold Light Railway on the Staffordshire Moorlands. The railway opened in 1907, linking the villages of Waterhouses and Hulme End, and was built mainly for agricultural traffic, with a passenger service being a secondary consideration. Its route went through beautiful countryside in Staffordshire, and it is unfortunate that the intertitles state it as being shot in Derbyshire!
In 1934 the entire line was closed by the North Staffordshire Railway. There is little in the way of recorded film material of this quaint little train, so this gem gives an invaluable insight into the railway. (Stuart Smith, Midlands Railway Centre)
