Manitou Springs Colorado
Manitou Springs is a home rule municipality located in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The town was founded for its scenic setting and natural mineral springs. The downtown area continues to be of interest to travelers, particularly in the summer, as the downtown area consists of many one-story, adjoining, small shops, restaurants, and pubs, as well as a creekside city park with a children's playground made from unusual materials. Among other services, shops cater to tourist interests such as clothing, candy, souvenirs, and outdoor recreation. The main road through the center of town was one of the direct paths to the base of Pikes Peak. Barr Trail, which winds its way up Pikes Peak, is accessible from town. The subdivision Crystal Hills was added to the municipality in the 1960s.
General William Jackson Palmer and Dr. William Abraham Bell founded Manitou Springs in 1872, intending the town to be a scenic health resort. Dr Bell's home, Briarhurst Manor, is open to the public as a fine dining restaurant, which is listed on the National Register of Historic places. In 1876, the town was incorporated. Manitou Springs has been the quintessential tourist town since the 1870s, when visitors discovered the healing waters the Ute Indians had been drinking for years. Many of the town's mineral springs still function today and the water is free.

Honoring Loya Arrum and Family
A loving friend Loya has passed into the light. I am sending love and light to her friends and family. August 2014.
Loya Kaye Arrum, age 67, of Hilltop, passed away Aug. 27, 2014, after a year long battle with cancer. She was a “Warrior Woman” who fought to the end.
She was born March 2, 1947, in Ft. Duchesne, to Wilbur and Bobilene Colorow Arrum. A few years ago, she legally changed her name back to Arrum because there were so few left. She married Curtis Ray Cesspooch in Ft. Duchesne 37 years ago.
Loya attended BYU and went on to Weber State University where she graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in education and became a certified elementary school teacher. She worked as a teacher in the Uintah County School district for over 25 years. After retirement, she was the Ute Language Immersion teacher, Vice President of the Uintah & Ouray Historical Society, and was on the Education Board. She was very proud of her Native American heritage and spent many hours educating and consulting for others about the traditional values. She enjoyed traveling, and would often go to Pow Wows, Sundances, and Bear Dances all over the country. Her religious beliefs were tied to the Native American Church and their traditional ceremonies. To get away, she would often head to the mountains, and was renewed with the time she spent there. Her favorite pastimes were crocheting, reading, teaching, and her favorite show was the “Young and the Restless.” Her kind, friendly, and outgoing personality made it so that no one was a stranger. If she wanted to do something, she made a plan, and did it! She will be remembered for standing up for what was fair and right.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom called her “Majesty.” While teaching, she became a grandma to all of her students at Todd Elementary and Eagleview.
Loya is survived by her husband, Curtis, of Hilltop; her children, Michelle Reed, Yellowstone Subdivision; Mary (Jesus) Villegas, Tuttle, Okla.; Thomas Ray Cesspooch, Daniel Cesspooch, and Kerry Cesspooch, all of Ft. Duchesne; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and many other relatives.

Ghost Town History
Ghost Town Museum was created in 1954 to preserve a piece of Colorado's Wild West heritage.
In 1858 the cry Pikes Peak or Bust opened up the heartland of the Colorado territory to the gold prospector. Gold mining became a significant factor that led to the statehood of Colorado. The miners and the people who provided services to them quickly populated the western frontier of the United States. They needed transportation, and before long the twin steel ribbons of the railroads were pushing into the mountains to transport ore for processing.
Towns sprang up overnight and by the 1860's and 1870's people had blanketed the west. It was a rough and tumble time. Small encampments became small towns. Small cities along the rocky mountain Front Range provided a central location for supplies and services. The search for gold drove prospectors to every mountain valley, and every mountain peak. If gold or silver were not located, or if the mines played out, the towns were often abandoned to become ghost towns.
Little by little the raw spirit of the frontier died down. By the time gold was discovered in Cripple Creek in 1891, the frontier was almost gone. Today almost nothing remains of those exciting days of the old west. A scattered pile of old lumber, a tumbled pile of rocks marking an old mine, an occasional wagon wheel or a piece of equipment. The rip roaring camps of 100 years ago have become ghost towns now only a memory of a bygone era.
The Ames Monument - 2017 Narrow Gauge Convention
On the trip out to Denver, we stopped by the strange Ames Monument at what was at one time, the highest point on the Union Pacific. The Ames Monument has been called a 65 foot pile of steaming hubris.
***********************************************
Erected in 1880, the pyramid is a monument to the Ames Brothers, Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames, Jr., Union Pacific Railroad financiers. Oliver became president of the Union Pacific, as the story goes at the insistence of Abraham Lincoln. Brother Oakes was a congressman from Massachusetts.
*****************************************************
From the web:
The Ames Monument is a large pyramid in Albany County, Wyoming, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and dedicated to brothers Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames, Jr., Union Pacific Railroad financiers. The brothers garnered credit for connecting the nation by rail upon completion of the United States' First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Oakes, a U.S. representative to the United States Congress from Massachusetts, asserted near total control of its construction, whereas Oliver became president of the Union Pacific Railroad (1866 - 1871).[1] In 1873 investigators implicated Oakes in fraud associated with financing of the railroad. Congress subsequently censured Oakes, who resigned in 1873.[2] He died soon thereafter.
The Ames Monument marked the highest point on the transcontinental railroad at 8,247 feet (2,514 m] However, Union Pacific Railroad Company twice relocated the tracks further south, causing the town of Sherman that arose near the monument to become a ghost town.
***************************************************
The audacity of building a transcontinental railroad in the 1860s was today's equivalent of the mission to Mars: Big, expensive and impossible, according to University of Wyoming historian Phil Roberts. President Abraham Lincoln reportedly told Oakes Ames that if he could get the transcontinental railroad built then he would be the most remembered man of the century. Lincoln personally recruited Oakes after progress by and financial support for Credit Mobilier of America, the construction company charged with building the railroad, ground to a halt. The Ames brothers succeeded where others failed and completed the transcontinental railway. However, in 1873 charges of financial fraud were leveled at Oakes, tarnishing his and the Union Pacific Railroad Company's reputation.
Public outcry towards Oakes and other Kings of Frauds associated with scandal threatened the Ames family reputation and the Ames Company that dated back to 1774 when the company started making steel-edged shovels.[5] The Ames Company later sold axes and shovels to miners during the California Gold Rush.[7] The company continued its heritage as earth movers by supplying the government shovels during the Civil War, for excavating the Panama Canal, for mining Pennsylvania coal fields, and for digging the New York City Subway.[5]

Memory of the financial scandal that surfaced in 1873 had not been forgotten when the Union Pacific Railroad Company built the monument honoring the Ames brothers during 1881-1882.[6] The Union Pacific Railroad Board of Directors voted in 1875 to erect the grand Ames Monument, in part to help reclaim some of the company's luster lost during implications of fraud leveled earlier at Oakes Ames.[2] Union Pacific stockholders subsequently authorized the construction at a meeting held in Boston on March 10, 1875.[1]
The Norcross Brothers of Worcester, Massachusetts built the monument, employing some 85 workers who lived on site, where reportedly no liquor or gambling was allowed.[1] Workers cut the stone for the pyramid from a granite outcropping common in the area. They then used oxen teams to skid the stone a half-mile to the work site. The rough-faced granite blocks used to construct the monument in many cases weigh several tons.
*********************************************************
Workers constructed the pyramid about 300 yards south of the tracks on a small knoll. When completed in 1882, the Ames Monument stood 300 feet (91 m) south of, and 32 feet (9.8 m) above, the highest elevation of the original tracks of Union Pacific transcontinental railroad at 8,247 feet (2,514 m). President Rutherford B. Hayes underscored the importance of the transcontinental railroad and thereby the Ames brothers by attending the monument's dedication ceremony.
