Manta Ray snorkeling aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona Hawaii Big Island
#mantarays #snorkeling #bigisland We took a snorkeling cruise aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The crew was very nice and professional. The boat was very nice. It appeared new and clean. The manta rays are attracted to the plankton, which are attracted to the lights, so all the cruises have snorkelers hang onto surfboards with handles affixed, and use pool noodles to support their feet and keep them level with the water. The manta rays were super cool! And as they feed at night, the only way to see or experience them is to book a tour like this.
Manta Ray Night Dive close to Kailua-Kona Hawaii with Big Island Divers and Manta Ray Advocates
Had a great Manta Ray Night Dive with Big Island Divers (bigislanddivers.com) on Big Island Hawaii, (second dive with them that day). First one (afternoon) was great too: dolphins, barracuda, manta's, garden-eels, great coral reef and so on. But this one was even more amazing, otherwordly, ......
These giant creatures are virtually harmless, feed on plankton (by filtering), are thought to be intelligent (high brain mass to body mass ratio) and can reach a wingspan of more than 5 meters (16 feet) - just some facts :)
We, as scuba-divers, sat on the oceanfloor (about 10 m / 30 ft deep), rocks on our laps, around a campfire of light having been positioned there by Big Island Divers at the start of our afternoon dive to attract plankton. We also used our flashlights. Snorkelers were also present at the surface looking down to enjoy this spectacular show. Mantas passed all the time, sometimes only cm/inches away, had to duck or lean/lay back often to prevent hurting them.
Thanks to Manta Ray Advocates(MantaAdvocatesHawaii.com) for this video.
Will post my own videos soon though they are of less quality of course :)
Visiting Hawaii?: Book this one!!! and buy the photos and video. Definitely worth the bucks.

Manta Ray Night SCUBA Dive Big Island, Hawaii
Video of the Manta Ray Night Dive off of Kailua Kona, Hawaii on the Big Island
Hawaii Big Island Night Manta Ray Snorkel
The west shore of Hawaii’s Big Island is the only documented place on the planet where you can snorkel with massive manta rays at night. Year-round the massive rays migrate out of the deep during twilight hours to the shallow, plankton-rich waters off Hawaii’s coast to feed. While the night snorkel started more than 35 years ago in front of the Sheraton Hotel, it’s now done in several shallow areas including adjacent to the Kona National Airport where we were.
Most operators leave port an hour before sunset, anchor up and watch the sunset before hopping into the water once darkness blankets the Pacific Ocean. At this point, anywhere from 15-30 boats unload their passengers, who hold onto PVC that’s attached to a surfboard. The surfboard floats, enabling visitors to hold onto it and watch the rays. The rays are drawn in by strong LED lights that are bolted to the board and facing the water. The light draws in plankton, which is the manta rays main food source.
You’ll see glow sticks attached to swimmers snorkels. Those are to identify which group swimmers are with and also to keep swimmers visible to boaters. The lights you see in the water on the video are divers on the bottom of the ocean. They shine flashlights, which also draw in plankton, giving the rays a reason to swoop down for food. Rays do show most nights, but this particular night was spectacular for several reasons: more than a dozen rays came to the campfire (the area where all the divers shine their lights and LED lights are shined into the water), the water was fairly calm (it can get rough here) and there were only 15 boats (25 plus is common during peak season).
Divers and snorkelers aren’t allowed to touch the rays. They also wear wetsuits. The rays are so large that when they swim in to feed they often brush against humans. If human bacteria gets on the ray’s skin it can be harmful. The wetsuit works to prevent that.

When too many boats visit the central viewing area there are additional safety issues, increased risk and liability to you as the guest and to the manta rays. 400+ people in the water at night is too many. Yes, the Pacific ocean is huge, however this central night viewing area for the manta rays can only handle so many boats on moorings.
Here along the coast of Kailua Kona, Hawaii we have a mooring ball system. What is a mooring ball? A mooring ball floats on the surface and is connected to a large, heavy anchor permanently attached to the seabed. Then there is a line with a loop at the end attached to the mooring ball. Mooring balls on our coast are usually found in 20 feet. This system was put in place to protect our coral reefs so boats wouldn’t need to anchor on the coral.
When all the mooring balls are taken at the Manta Ray viewing site the boats then anchor. Which can be on the coral. Not good for the coral and sea life. We have seen an anchor chain hit and hurt a manta ray.
New regulations would change this issue and it would protect our manta rays, reef and you!

Big Island Hawaii Deep Blue - Swimming with Mantas
Swimming with dolphins and manta rays in Big Island, Hawaii.
Pods of dolphins cruise along the Kona coast of Hawaii. They're quite playful, jumping and flipping out of the sea. Occasionally, they came to look at us :) The water is amazingly blue and clear here.
At night, we find giant manta rays! Bright lights shine into the water to attract plankton, which in turn attract the manta rays to come feed. They're massive (about the size of a car or truck), yet I'd never seen any creature so graceful.
Special thanks to Iruka Tours ( / Japanese site: for arranging the dolphin and manta ray night swims). Special thanks to WaiWai Tours ( for showing us the night-time volcano and a local tour of Big Island.
Captured on a GoPro Hero 4 Black and Nikon D800.

Swimming with Manta Rays in Kona on the Big Island in Hawaii
One of the most unique activities in Hawaii is found on the Big Island just north of Kona. Here the warm and cold water currents meet to form the perfect environment for plankton, the primary food for Mantas. Every evening around sunset, divers and snorkelers gather on the western most point of the island to view the manta rays up close and personal for an unforgettable experience with nature.
