Immerse Yourself in Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters
Marathon offers multi-generational visitors to the middle Keys an immersive experience with reef fish, invertebrates, stingrays and even sharks without having to go out in the ocean.
As a hands-on, interactive learning center, the unique attraction strives to inspire visitors about the importance of marine conservation and provide both education and discovery about the fragile and complex underwater habitats in the Florida Keys.
The signature feature is a coral reef exhibit and shark habitat housed in a massive 200,000-gallon interconnected saltwater aquarium for viewing. In-tank participants can immerse themselves to hover over a mock coral reef structure and interact with tropical reef fish, a variety of rays and other coral-dwelling marine species that are part of the in-tank ecosystem.
Other interactive aquarium encounters include shallow touch tanks that feature starfish, conch and horseshoe crabs as well as to allow feeding de-barbed stingrays and docile baby nurse sharks.
Marathon Key, Florida - Camping & Travel VLOG #9
#Florida #camping #nature #beautiful #travel #fitness #adventure
Marathon is a 10-mile-long family-oriented island community conveniently situated in the middle of the Keys island chain, comprised mainly of Vaca Key, Fat Deer Key and Grassy Key.
Residents, snowbirds and visitors enjoy Marathon’s fishing heritage, an old-Keys lifestyle and seafaring traditions, a theme celebrated in the area’s accommodations, such as private waterfront vacation homes, small hotels, beachside inns and tropical, family-style resorts; and annual seafood festivals and waterside restaurants that harvest fresh fish, lobster and stone crab claws from local waters.
For anglers, waters teem with offshore billfish and tuna in the winter, bridge-hugging tarpon in the spring and dolphin fish in the summer.
A Marine-Friendly City
Marathon is one of the Keys’ most marine-friendly cities with nearly 1,200 wet slips, 1,200 dry slips and major facilities to accommodate transient cruisers.
Marathon City Marina, considered the Keys’ jewel for cruisers, administers 226 mooring balls and has limited dockage. Both mooring balls and dockage are available by the day, week or month.
There are also special mooring and managed anchorage fields in Boot Key Harbor as part of a statewide environmental protection pilot program. Boats on a mooring ball do pay a fee.
Other features include two dinghy docks, storage, private showers and bathroom facilities, social center, coin-operated laundry and parking.
Florida Keys Marathon International Airport busily accommodates a full range of services for general aviation enthusiasts and corporate jet operators. Two full-service FBO’s offer fuel, maintenance, tie-down, pilot and passenger facilities. Ground transportation options are available including an airport shuttle, car rental agencies and taxi service.
Spectacular Boating
Marathon offers spectacular sailing, fishing, world-class wreck and reef diving and snorkeling, in addition to the island’s impeccably maintained beaches, eco-attractions and marine-based educational programs.
Iconic learning centers with educational focus where visitors can enjoy unique interactive experiences include The Turtle Hospital, which was the world’s first licensed veterinary hospital dedicated to the treatment of sea turtles, and Dolphin Research Center, a not-for-profit education and research facility since 1984.
Immersive Experiences
Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters features a coral reef exhibit and a predatory fish habitat housed in a 200,000-gallon interconnected saltwater aquarium.
Visitors can enjoy an immersive, interactive experience where they can touch, feel and feed reef fish, invertebrates, stingrays and even sharks.
At Crane Point Museum, Nature Center & Historic Site, visitors can hike through a wondrously preserved tropical hardwood grove and visit the home of an early 20th-century settler family.
Visitors to the five-acre Pigeon Key venture back in time to experience a tiny island that once served as a home base for workers building the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad.
A federally protected section of the United States’ only living coral barrier reef lies just a few miles offshore, at teeming formations such as Delta Shoals, Coffin Patch and Sombrero Reef, shallow sites popular for students learning to scuba dive.
In the deeper blue waters of the Florida Straits lie artificial reefs and the purposely-sunk wreck of the Thunderbolt.
On the north side of the island lie the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Bay and the Keys backcountry.

???? WILL HUNTER RIDE THE DOLPHIN?? ???? | THEATRE OF THE SEAS
Does Hunter get to ride the dolphin or sea lion?? Watch the video to find out!
We visited Theatre of the Seas to experience all this iconic Keys landmark has to offer. We watched a parrot show, sea lion show, and of course, a dolphin show. After all the shows, we went for a bottomless boat ride and did some snorkeling in their private lagoon. It was a GREAT experience! We highly recommend it to Keys visitors! Don't just drive by the big conch shell, come on in for a visit!
Theatre of the Sea
Theater of the Sea, established in 1946, is a marine mammal park located in the Village of Islamorada, Florida, United States. It is a tourist attraction located on Windley Key in the Florida Keys. Visitors can swim with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, and Sting Rays, or watch shows where they perform. In which dolphins swim in and jump through a hoop and ring a bell. The 17-acre (6.9 ha) site also has exotic birds, lizards, crocodilians, sea turtles, tropical, game fish, sharks, and other forms of marine life. Short cruises and bottomless boat rides are also conducted.
The park also engages in ecological conservation programs, including the first artificial flipper transplant on a sea turtle.
The property on which Theater of the Sea sits was formerly a quarry used to supply rock for construction of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad. When the railroad went bankrupt after the devastating Labor Day Hurricane, the property was sold by the receivership to a local for $800 (having no interest in the property, the local was offered a parcel stretching to Whale Harbor, about 0.2 miles to the west, for the same $800).
Theater of the Sea was opened in 1946

(We will) get a lot more (bad) weather out of this one so in turn the boat owners, I've checked with everybody and everybody is going to leave. So they are just going to secure their boats down. At six o'clock I'll stretch a cable out across the mouth of the harbour and then we'll have no boats coming or going after that. At that point everybody will be able to do the same thing that Dawn (a boat owner) is doing. They will stretch their lines out, pull their boats away from the docks so that the boats can rise and fall with the tides basically is what it is.

STORYLINE
South Florida residents were sent scurrying on Friday under new evacuation orders as powerful Hurricane Ivan, which has killed at least 33 people in the Caribbean, took aim at the state.
Traffic was about double normal levels leaving the Keys on the Overseas Highway, the lone road link to the mainland, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Long lines appeared at petrol stations and shoppers swarmed home building stores and supermarkets to prepare for a possible third strike in a month.
Tourists and residents of mobile homes were ordered to evacuate the Keys on Thursday, the third such order in a month.
Shelters were being set up at Florida International University in Miami.
Governor Jeb Bush said workers would redouble their around-the-clock efforts, even as they continued cleaning up after Hurricanes Charley and Frances.
The National Hurricane Centre said Ivan could hit the Keys - Florida's narrow island chain - as a Category 4 hurricane, with top winds of 131 to 155 miles per hour (210 kilometres per hour to 249 kilometres per hour), as soon as late Monday.
However, there was still a chance the storm would instead move out into the Gulf of Mexico.
If it does strike Florida, Ivan would add to the state's already deadly and costly hurricane season.
Charley, which hit August 13, and Frances, which hit on Sunday, killed at least 44 people and caused up to 20 (b) billion US dollars (16 (b) billion euros) in combined damage.
The state has not been hit by three hurricanes in a single season since 1964.
Both storms missed the Keys, however.
