Immokalee, Florida - Part One: Outpost of Opportunity | Untold Stories
During the late 1800s, Seminole Indians living in isolated areas in Southwest Florida began developing relationships with European pioneers migrating inland. In 1885, William H. Brown and his family settled in the Immokalee Florida area 40 miles northeast of Naples and began trading with the Seminoles. Immokalee was named after the Seminole word for my home.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

Places to see in ( Jacksonville - USA )
Places to see in ( Jacksonville - USA )
Jacksonville is a large city in northeastern Florida where the St. John’s River meets the Atlantic Ocean. A regional business center, it has many museums and cultural offerings. Swimming and surfing are popular at nearby barrier island beaches such as Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach. Championship golf courses in the area include Ponte Vedra Beach’s TPC Sawgrass, headquarters of the PGA Tour.
Jacksonville is situated on the Atlantic coast of northeast Florida. It is the most populous city in the of Florida measured by the number of residents. But Jacksonville covers an enormous area, and is in fact the largest city in area in the continental United States. The city has a large area, but also has a low density rate. The metropolitan area extends beyond Duval County into Nassau, St. Johns, Baker and Clay counties and has a population of more than 1.25 million people. The city's metropolitan population is not the largest in Florida, it is exceeded by the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, Tampa, and Orlando metro areas.
Jacksonville is widely known as a hard-working, blue-collar city. While a substantial portion of Jacksonville's economy is supported by both of its large U.S. Navy bases (Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport), it is also a hotbed for the banking, logistics, insurance, and healthcare sectors. The downtown skyline, notable for its bridges of various styles and colors, spans along the St. Johns River with a pedestrian river walk located on each bank. Although the bulk of Jacksonville's population is suburban in nature and spread throughout Duval County, renewed development efforts are currently underway in the urban core along with preservation efforts in its historic districts. Jacksonville is nicknamed JAX, or 'The Bold City'
At a whopping 840 sq miles, Jacksonville is the largest city by area in the contiguous United States and the most populous in Florida. The city sprawls along three meandering rivers, with sweeping bridges and twinkling city lights reflected in the water. A glut of high-rises, corporate HQs and chain hotels can make 'Jax' feel a little soulless, but patient exploration yields some interesting streets, curious characters and a Southern-fried, friendly heart.
The city's museums and restored historic districts are worth a wander if you have the time, and the Five Points and San Marco neighborhoods are charming, walkable areas lined with bistros, boutiques and bars. The Jacksonville area beaches – a world unto themselves – are 30 to 50 minutes' drive from the city, depending on traffic and where you're coming from.

Jupiter Island from Florida Maps: Then & Now
Welcome to Florida Maps: Then & Now, an animated map series from the State Archives of Florida. This episode highlights historic maps of Jupiter Island.
Jupiter Island is often cited as containing some of the most expensive real estate in the entire country. With modern property values in mind, it is hard to imagine one person owning the whole island. However, that was exactly the case for Eusibio M. Gomez. This map shows land granted to Gomez by the Spanish government in the early 19th century. The grant included all of modern day Jupiter Island, from the St. Lucie River to the Jupiter Inlet.
At the time of first contact with Europeans and Africans, Jupiter Island and the surrounding area was inhabited by Native Americans known as the Jaega. To the South lived the Tequesta, and to the North the Ais. In the 17th century, the Spanish attempted to Christianize the indigenous populations South of the St. Lucie River, but with little success. One of the best accounts of the area during the colonial period came from a shipwrecked Quaker merchant named Jonathan Dickinson. In September, 1696, Dickinson and his traveling companions became marooned on Jupiter Island. The locals quickly took possession of the contents of their disabled vessel, and directed the passengers and crew towards their village. Dickinson described the scene:
After we had traveled about five miles along the deep sand, the sun being extremely hot, we came to an inlet. On the other side was the Indian town, being little wigwams made of small poles stuck in the ground, which they bended one to another, making an arch, and covered them with thatch of small palmetto-leaves... Night came on; the moon being up, an Indian, who performeth their ceremonies stood out, looking full at the moon making a hideous noise, and crying out acting like a mad man for the space of half an hour; all the Indians being silent till he had done: after which they all made fearful noise some like the barking of a dog, wolf, and other strange sounds.
Eventually, the tired and weary travelers were escorted to St. Augustine. The Spaniards arranged for passage to Charleston, and then Philadelphia, their original destination.
Little development took place on Jupiter Island until the 20th century, when the land was transformed from a narrow sandbar, skirted on the West by mangroves and on the East by the rolling Atlantic, to a haven for the wealthy, dominated by beachfront estates.

Calusa Indians Mound House ????⛰????????????????
Restored house museum atop an ancient Calusa Indian shell mound, with artifacts & cultural programs.
Calusa Indians dominated most of the southwest region of Florida as they assembled in small villages or fishing stations, as the first inhabitants of these barrier islands. It is believed Carlos was the paramount chief to rule from his Mound Key, seen above, within the waters of Estero Bay.
The Calusa were known as coastal people, and were fisher-gatherers whose sustainability depended on their rich and diverse habitat. They posessed a vast knowledge of seamanship, relying on tides and currents, and built seaworthy canoes and water courts with terraced mounds for higher and safer ground from high tides and hurricanes.
Archeologists and historians continue to piece together the stories of these native people, who made first contact when Ponce de Leon explored this area in 1513. By the 1750's The Calusa had vacated these barrier islands, followed by the fisherfolk, rumrunners and a pirate or two, who found refuge here.
Estero Island was surveyed and platted in 1876. Robert Gilbert filed his claim in 1898 to build the oldest remaining structure on the island known today at the Mound House.
