Twelfth Night celebration in Biloxi kicks off Mardi Gras
The holiday lights at the Biloxi Lighthouse were turned off Monday and the lights at the Mardi Gras Museum were ignited to symbolize the start of the Mardi Gras season.

Mardi Gras Parade in Mobile Alabama Fat Tuesday celebration Home of the Original Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras in Mobile is the oldest annual Carnival celebration in the United States, having begun in 1703, The festival was a French Catholic tradition, reflecting the French colonial status of the first capital of La Louisiane. Settlers celebrated until midnight on Fat Tuesday, before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Carnival and Mardi Gras in Mobile have evolved into a citywide multi-week celebration.

Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 forever changed the landscape of South Mississippi. In one day the wind and storm surge destroyed homes and trees that stood for generations. In the trunks of those dead trees professional wood sculptor Marlin Miller of Fort Walton Beach, Florida saw feathers, fins and beaks. For three years he donated his time and talent and carved a trail of Katrina Sculptures that stretches for 40 miles.

Car Show at the BBQ Thowdown in d'Iberville Ms.
Each year d'Iberville Ms. plays host to a BBQ competition and people from all over the U.S. come here to be part of it. This year they also had a car show. It was sort of like a (very) mini Cruisin' The Coast. There were, at a guess probably 60 cars there. I was particularly fond of the Chevy 'vert pickup you'll see towards the end......

나는 도착하자마자 바로 다운타운의 버번 스트리트로 향했다. 바로 오늘이 핼러윈 축제이기 때문이다. 이른 저녁이지만 벌써 거리에는 축제를 즐기기 위해 나온 사람들로 발 딛을 틈이 없을 만큼 인산인해다. 슈퍼영웅, 알카포네, 만화캐릭터 등 세상의 모든 캐릭터들이 다 모인 듯하다. 역시 음악의 도시답게 곳곳에서 길거리 공연이 하나 둘 씩 시작된다. 거리의 사람들은 그 음악에 맞춰 몸을 흔들기 시작한다. 이렇듯 축제는 거리의 공연예술가들에겐 많은 대중 앞에서 자신의 재주를 맘껏 뽐낼 수 있는 최고의 기회이기도 하다. 유독 사람들의 관심을 끄는 의상이 보인다. 바로 미시시피 강 하류에 살았던 나체스 인디언의 전통의상이다. 지금은 사라진 인디언이지만 핼러윈축제에서만큼은 만날 수 있는 것 같다. 거리의 네온사인들은 핼러윈축제를 위한 최고의 소품처럼 느껴진다. 밤이 깊어지자 거리에 화려한 퍼레이드가 시작되었는데 그 끝이 보이지 않을 정도다. 죽은 자들의 영혼을 달래기 위한 그 옛날 유럽 켈트족의 작은 풍습이 지금 전 세계가 즐기는 핼러윈 축제가 되었다고 하니 참 놀라울 뿐이다. 나는 이 곳에서 특별한 시간을 보내고 있는 노부부를 만났다. “뉴올리언스의 핼러윈은 모든 사람이 현재를 잊고 휴식을 취할 수 있는 기회입니다. 내 아내가 말하길 1년 동안 받았던 유방암 치료를 잊고 그저 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있는 기회라고 하더군요. 내가 어디 있는지 누구인지를 완전히 잊고 노는 겁니다.” 뉴올리언스에서의 첫 번째 밤은 이렇게 핼러윈 축제와 함께 흘러간다.

Former athlete for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Louisiana State University, Doug Thompson is a native of Biloxi. In 1997 he was the winning pitcher in LSU’s National Championship game at the College World Series. Thompson was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 1998 and stayed with the organization for six seasons, reaching the AAA level. He is now a radio broadcaster for LSU baseball.
