극장 광장에 있는 마린스키 극장은 150년의 전통을 자랑하는 러시아 예술의 본 무대다. 그 앞으로 림스키 코르사코프 음악원이 자리 잡고 있고, 그 옆으로는 림스키 코르사코프 동상이 있다. 림스키 코르사코프은 러시아 민족음악을 추구한 국민 음악파 5인의 작곡가 중 중심인물이다. 나는 차이코프스키를 비롯한 뛰어난 음악가를 길러낸 이 음악원을 방문하고 싶었다. 이곳은 1862년에 세워진 유서 깊은 음악원이다. 음악원은 콘서트홀과 연결되어 있다. 복도 중앙에는 이 음악원의 설립자인 안톤 루빈스타인의 석고상이 자리 잡고 있다. 2층 한쪽 방에는 이 음악원이 배출한 음악가들의 사진과 기록물 그리고 조각상 등이 있는 자료실이 있다. 러시아가 낳은 천재 음악가라는 찬사를 들은 쇼스타코비치 그리고 아이들을 위한 작품 『피터와 늑대』로 우리에게 잘 알려진 프로코피에프도이 음악원 출신이다. 상트페테르부르크 음악원은 이 음악원의 교수였던 림스키 코르사코프의 이름을 따, 1944년 개명하게 된다. 차이코프스키는 이 음악원의 1회 졸업생이었다. 차이코프스키는 내게 특별한 작곡가다. 그의 피아노협주곡 1번의 아름다운 선율에 이끌려 클래식에 입문하게 되는 계기가 됐기 때문이다.

Mariinskiy Theatre, also spelled Maryinsky, Mariyinsky is a historic theatre of opera and ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Opened in 1860, it became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. Through most of the Soviet era, it was known as the Kirov Theatre. Today, the Mariinsky Theatre is home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera and Mariinsky Orchestra. Since Yuri Temirkanov's retirement in 1988, the conductor Valery Gergiev has served as the theatre's general director.

The Easter Festival is an internationally renowned event among classical music lovers, traditionally opened in Moscow on Easter Sunday. Each year the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and its musical director Valery Gergiev travel across Russia - for the past 10 years now!
In 2012 we were given an exceptional musical gift: the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev performed the complete cycle of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and piano concerti - a composer with whom Maestro Gergiev and the orchestra seem particularly in tune.

In July, 2012, Japanese pianist-composer Nobuyuki Tsujii was invited by Maestro Valery Gergiev to perform at the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. On July 8, Mr. Tsujii gave a rousing performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Maestro Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, followed by a solo recital in the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall on July 10. Both performances were extremely well received by the Russian audiences.
The footage in this video is extracted from an excellent TV special Nobuyuki Tsujii x Tchaikovsky aired on Fuji-TV in Japan on October 6, 2012.

Blind since birth, pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii believes that “there are no barriers in the field of music.” At the age of twelve, he made noted recital debuts at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. In 2009 Nobu won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medal, his Carnegie Hall debut took place in November 2011.

The blind up-and-coming Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, an astonishing genius on his instrument, is playing for the first time ever under the Russian conductor Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. During the White Nights Festival -- dedicated to the season of midnight sun -- he interprets works by the Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich, including Tchaikovsky's famous Piano Concerto No. 1 and Shostakovich's gloomy Symphony No. 14. As a bonus Nobuyuki Tsujii performs his own elegy for the victims of the tsunami in 2011, a stirring and moving piece dedicated to his home country Japan. At the 9th of October, 2018, together with my daughter Victoria we have visited the classical concert at the Grand Hall of Saint Petersburg Philharmonia recently named after Dmitry Shostakovich.
The program of the evening was consisted of these concerts:

We came mostly for our favorite Sergey Rachmaninoff and his second symphony! It is definitely was a great evening!
