Marin Coalition Lunch Dec 2. 2015 Arts in Marin County
“The Crisis in Arts and Cultural Funding in Marin”
The Role of Art in Quality of Life and How Should it be Funded
Guest Speakers:
Michael Barker, Director, Marin Theatre Company
Charles Brousse, Senior Theater Critic, Pacific Sun
Kristen Madsen, Director, Creative Sonoma
Luncheon and Speaker Program – Wednesday December 2, 2015
Marin takes pride in our vital arts and culture programs. For years, the Marin Community Foundation provided $1.5-2M in annual operating funds from the Buck Trust to non-profit organizations providing the life-blood for their activities. Recently, however, MCF changed funding priorities. Many nonprofits have fallen into a financial crisis. Our December speakers will address key questions: What is the role of arts and culture in a healthy community? Who should fund it? Specifically, going forward, should Marin County funds replace all, or part, of the financial support MCF has withdrawn? What are other possible options?
Michael Barker is the managing director of Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley, California, the leading mid-sized professional theatre company in the Bay Area. He was previously the general manager of Laguna Playhouse in Southern California, the managing director for the Los Angeles classical theater ensemble The Antaeus Company, associate managing director at Yale Repertory Theatre and managing director of Yale Summer Cabaret. He holds an MFA in theater management from Yale School of Drama and an MBA from Yale School of Management. He is the chair of the Mill Valley Arts Commission, the Outreach Chair at Christ Episcopal Church Sausalito, and serves on the board of the Yale School of Management Alumni Association.
Charles Brousse began his career in the arts working in the field of live theater as a critic (KQED-TV, Marin Independent Journal, Pacific Sun), playwright, and founding artistic director of Theater Artists of Marin, a San Rafael based production company specializing in new script development. Charles holds a BA in Political Science and a PhD in Political Science and History from Stanford University. He also was a fellowship student in political philosophy at the University of Rome, Italy, and worked briefly as an intern in the Political and Security Council Affairs Department of the UN Secretariat, N.Y.
Kristen Madsen is a 25-year veteran of the music and arts industries and is currently serving as the Director of Creative Sonoma. Creative Sonoma was launched in 2014 to bring together and advance the individuals, organizations and enterprises in Sonoma County whose work is creative at its core. Previously, she was Senior Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, two charities founded by The Recording Academy, both of which were named to the “50 Best Nonprofits to Work For” in 2011 by the Nonprofit Times. She began her arts career as a Booking Manager for the Repertory Dance Theatre, followed by six years as Community Development and Performing Arts Coordinator at the Utah Arts Council. Subsequently, she ran the California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies, working to ensure access to arts programming in local communities across the state.

The Invisible Peak (hidden in plain sight)
Mt. Tamalpais, sentinel peak of the San Francisco Bay Area, is considered sacred by many... native and non-native alike. In 1950, the military bulldozed the highest peak of the mountain to build an Air Force Station tasked with directing jet interceptors and short range Nike nuclear missiles against the potential threat of Russian nuclear bombers. By 1980 the base was obsolete and summarily closed. The military literally walked away from dozens of structures, leaving behind a huge toxic mess on the mountain. Through the use of historical footage, 3D reconstruction, interviews and breathtaking timelapse cinematography, this 20-minute film, narrated and co-written by Peter Coyote, explores the history of Tam's West Peak and how local citizens have been fighting to restore their mountain to a natural state. invisiblepeak.com © 2014 Gary Yost

A Waterfront Masterpiece on the San Francisco Bay. 1456 Sandpiper Spit Offered at $4,695,000
Rarely do you find a property on the entire San Francisco Bay like this custom built home.
This is one of the most breathtaking contemporary homes located on the water in the entire Bay Area and Northern California. A true boater paradise with approximately 134 feet of water frontage and complete privacy in all directions as the home sits on a combined two parcels at the end of a gated community.
Designed by architect Robert Nebolon from Berkeley and specifically guided from the owners desires; this home was a vision that then became a masterpiece. Perched prominently out over the San Francisco Bay the well-thought out home boasts a total of 5+ bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms.
Ideal for entertaining large groups as the home has a highly desirable open floor plan that highlights the views with the floor to ceiling glass windows on the entire waterfront side of the home. With two sets of gliding glass doors installed on both levels, one could open up both floors so the outdoor patios become one with the interior of the home. With the gliders completely opened, enjoy the sounds of life on the water including passing boats and vocal sea animals.
In addition to the 5 + bedrooms there is an executive dream office with built in mahogany desks with multiple work stations. When not working in the office; you can enjoy the use of the state-of-the-art movie theater with recliner movie seating and a 120-inch movie screen for your favorite Hollywood movies. There is also a hobby room with numerous built in shelves and tables for crafting arts. Amongst other features there is an elevator in the home, wine cellar and a great room that has soaring high ceilings.
Paying attention to the finest detail and the use of the high quality finishes this home was constructed ahead of its class. With unobstructed views in every direction; the layout captures breathtaking views from the San Francisco skyline, the city of Oakland, The Bay Bridge, the Bay, Point Richmond Marina, Angel Island, Marin County, Mount Tam and San Rafael Bridge. One can sit and relax by enjoying the views or one could get access to the entire San Francisco Bay with their own private 58+ foot deep water concrete boat dock. In addition, the boat dock has the capability to house larger size boats if one desires. The concrete boat dock was custom built and imported in order to suit the needs of the owner's favorite hobby of boating. This is a boat dock typically seen at local Marina's and not a dock that you would have at your own private residence.
The home provides an extensive outdoor area that is ideal for entertaining guests or allowing space for outdoor activities. There is an engineered outdoor space that consists of a built in BBQ with gas burners, an 8 person hot tub and a large play structure surrounded by child safe ground padding to ensure safety. All privately secured behind wind protected walls and glass railings to guarantee the quality of the view is not interrupted.
If you are looking for a world-class waterfront property that has it all; welcome to 1456 Sandpiper Spit located on the San Francisco Bay.

Cataract Falls, Fairfax Marin County during a flood (20 of rain on Mt Tam)
After months of drought a huge storm filled the gulch. Check this beautifully constructed bridge out. The old bridge survived the deluge however a smaller bridge lower down that crossed a feeder stream did not.
From KTVU: The rain was so intense that a group of hikers were stranded on a popular Mt. Tamalpais trail on Sunday, according to Marin County Sheriff's lieutenant. The sheriff's search-and-rescue team responded to a report of about 10 hikers who were stranded on the Cataract Trail near Alpine Lake at about 2:50 p.m., Lt. Doug Pittman said.Water from the heavy rain had washed out a footbridge that the hikers needed to use to get off the mountain, Pittman said. Rescuers were able to safely assist the group off the mountain by Sunday evening, he said. Pittman said the stranded party was initially part of a group of about 20 hikers who got stuck, but the other 10 took a different route to get out.
Scenic Ride Up Mt. Tamalpais, California - VTX 1800
Hey guys and gals - Come ride w/ me up Mount Tamalpais!
Mount Tamalpais is a hiking, picnicking, mountain and road cycling, horseback riding, and hang-gliding destination for residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, with over 100 miles (160 km) of trails and fire roads. With numerous trailheads, a well-networked trail and road system, and hikes of greatly varying length and difficulty, the mountain offers a compelling range of attractions. Marin Municipal Water District maintains several reservoirs on the north slopes of Mount Tamalpais, including Alpine Lake, Kent Lake, Bon Tempe Lake, Phoenix Lake, and Lake Lagunitas.
The western slopes of the mountain descend to the Pacific Ocean at Stinson Beach. The annual Dipsea Race traverses the mountain from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. Though backpack camping isn't allowed, walk-in camping exists at the Pantoll and Bootjack campgrounds. The historic Bootjack Campground was originally established in the early 1920s by the Tamalpais Conservation Corps, and the Civilian Conservation Corps further refined the campground facilities in the 1930s. Showing substantial signs of overuse, the campground was closed by State Parks in 1969. The Bootjack Campground and Trail were reopened on Thursday, June 5, 2014.
Trailhead parking within Mt. Tamalpais State Park is available generally with a self-service fee ($8). The scenic Ridgecrest Blvd. running along the ridgeline between the Rock Spring trailhead and Fairfax-Bolinas Road, with panoramic views of the summit, Pacific, San Francisco, Bolinas, and Point Reyes, is featured in many automobile and other advertisements, as well as being the local hang-gliding launch point. Mount Tam is also home to the Edgewood Botanic Garden and to the Sidney B. Cushing Amphitheatre where Broadway musical productions are performed every year by the Mountain Play Association. Monthly astronomy viewings and lectures are held at Rock Spring and Mountain Theater April through October.

Tupac interview at 17 years old-1988
Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in the East Harlem section of Manhattan in New York City.[14] His birth name was Lesane Parish Crooks, but in 1972, he was renamed after the last Incan emperor.[15][16][17] He was named after Túpac Amaru II,[18][19] the 18th-century Peruvian revolutionary who was executed after leading an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule.[20] Shakur was of African-American descent.[21]
His mother, Afeni Shakur (born Alice Faye Williams), and his father, Billy Garland, were active members of the Black Panther Party in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Tupac was born a month after his mother was acquitted of more than 150 charges of Conspiracy against the United States government and New York landmarks in the New York Panther 21 court case.[22][23]
Shakur lived from an early age with people who were involved with the Black Liberation Army and convicted of serious criminal offenses and who were imprisoned. His godfather, Elmer Geronimo Pratt, a high-ranking Black Panther, was convicted of murdering a school teacher during a 1968 robbery, although his sentence was later overturned. His stepfather, Mutulu, spent four years at large on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list beginning in 1982. Mutulu was wanted for having helped his sister Assata Shakur (also known as Joanne Chesimard) to escape from a penitentiary in New Jersey. She had been imprisoned for killing a state trooper in 1973. Mutulu was caught in 1986 and imprisoned for the robbery of a Brinks armored truck in which two police officers and a guard were killed.[24] Shakur had a half-sister, Sekyiwa, two years his junior, and an older stepbrother, Mopreme Komani Shakur, who appeared in many of his recordings.[25]
At the age of twelve, Shakur enrolled in Harlem's 127th Street Repertory Ensemble and was cast as the Travis Younger character in the play A Raisin in the Sun, which was performed at the Apollo Theater. In 1986, the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland.[26] After completing his second year at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, he transferred to the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet.[27] He performed in Shakespeare plays, and in the role of the Mouse King in the ballet The Nutcracker.[24] Shakur, accompanied by one of his friends, Dana Mouse Smith, as his beatbox, won many rap competitions and was considered to be the best rapper in his school.[28] He was remembered as one of the most popular kids in his school because of his sense of humor, superior rapping skills, and ability to mix with all crowds.[29] He developed a close friendship with a young Jada Pinkett (later Jada Pinkett Smith) that lasted until his death.
In the documentary Tupac: Resurrection, Shakur says, Jada is my heart. She will be my friend for my whole life. Pinkett Smith calls him one of my best friends. He was like a brother. It was beyond friendship for us. The type of relationship we had, you only get that once in a lifetime. A poem written by Shakur titled Jada appears in his book, The Rose That Grew from Concrete, which also includes a poem dedicated to Pinkett Smith called The Tears in Cupid's Eyes. During his time in art school, Shakur became affiliated with the Baltimore Young Communist League USA,[30][31] and began dating the daughter of the director of the local chapter of the Communist Party USA.[32]
In 1988, Shakur and his family moved to Marin City, California, a residential community located 5 miles (8 km) north of San Francisco,[26] where he attended Tamalpais High School in nearby Mill Valley.[33] Shakur contributed to the school's drama department by performing in several productions. In an English class, Shakur wrote a paper Conquering All Obstacles where he said, our raps not the sorry-story raps everyone is so tired of. They are about what happens in the real world. Our goal is [to] have people relate to our raps, making it easier to see what really is happening out there. Even more important, what we may do to better our world.[34] He began attending the poetry classes of Leila Steinberg in 1989.[35] That same year, Steinberg organized a concert with a former group of Shakur's, Strictly Dope; the concert led to him being signed with Atron Gregory. He set him up as a roadie and backup dancer with the hip hop group Digital Underground in 1990.[8][9][10]

As usual, we encounter the unexpected. From an impromptu Porsche Cayman chase à la Basic Instinct to trivia and banter that covers the gamut. Who knew that the color of the Golden Gate Bridge, or a look-a-like school bus from Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2 would all play small roles in our pre-show drive. At the Hop -REMIX- American Graffiti, George Lucas, Ron Howard, Paul LeMat, Cindy Williams, Dreyfus
No copyright infringement intended or implied. The At The Hop Scene in American Graffiti was filmed in Mill Valley, CA (Marin County) at Tam High School. The dance scene, the bathroom scene, and the Steve/Laurie dance (Smoke Gets in Your Eyes) were all filmed in one marathon all-nighter. American Graffiti, one of my top ten favorite films EVER made, all the more fascinating as it was made by a young moviemaker, on a limited budget, on a short shooting schedule, right here in my home, Marin County, CA.
American Graffiti is a 1973 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed and co-written by George Lucas starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Harrison Ford, C. Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins, and Wolfman Jack. Suzanne Somers and Joe Spano have cameos. Set in Modesto, California in 1962, the film is a study of the cruising and rock and roll cultures popular among the post–World War II baby boom generation. The film is told in a series of vignettes, telling the story of a group of teenagers and their adventures over a single evening.
The genesis of American Graffiti was in Lucas' own teenage years in early 1960s Modesto. He was unsuccessful in pitching the concept to financiers and distributors but found favor at Universal Pictures after United Artists, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Bros., and Paramount Pictures turned him down. Filming was initially set to take place in San Rafael, California, but the production crew was denied permission to shoot beyond a second day.
American Graffiti premiered on August 2, 1973 at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland and was released on August 11, 1973 in the United States. The film received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Produced on a $777,000 budget, it has become one of the most profitable films of all time. Since its initial release, American Graffiti has garnered an estimated return of well over $200 million in box office gross and home video sales, not including merchandising. In 1995, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
In early September 1962 in Modesto, California at the tail end of summer vacation, recent high school graduates and longtime friends, Curt Henderson and Steve Bolander, meet John Milner and Terry The Toad Fields at the local Mel's Drive-In parking lot. Despite receiving a $2,000 scholarship from the local Moose lodge, Curt is undecided if he wants to leave the next morning with Steve to go to the northeastern United States to begin college. Steve lets Toad borrow his 1958 Chevrolet Impala for the evening and while he's away at college until Christmas. Steve's girlfriend, Laurie, who also is Curt's sister, is unsure of Steve's leaving, to which he suggests—to Laurie's surprise—they see other people while he is away to strengthen their relationship. She is not happy with his proposal.
Curt, Steve, and Laurie go to the local back to school sock hop, while Toad and John begin cruising. En route to the dance, at a stoplight, Curt sees a beautiful blonde girl in a white 1956 Ford Thunderbird. She appears to say I love you before disappearing around the corner. After leaving the hop, Curt is desperate to find the mysterious blonde, but is coerced by a group of greasers (The Pharaohs) to participate in an initiation rite that involves hooking a chain to a police car and ripping out its back axle. Curt is told rumors that The Blonde is either a trophy wife or prostitute, which he refuses to believe.
Following a series of arguments, Steve and Laurie split, and John inadvertently picks up Carol, an annoying teenybopper who seems fond of him. Toad, who is normally socially inept with girls, successfully picks up a flirtatious, and somewhat rebellious, girl named Debbie. Meanwhile, Curt learns that the DJ Wolfman Jack broadcasts from just outside Modesto. Inside the radio station, Curt encounters a bearded man he assumes to be the manager. Curt hands the man a message for The Blonde to call or meet him. As he walks away, Curt hears the voice of The Wolfman, and, having just seen The Wolfman broadcasting, he realizes he had been speaking with The Wolfman himself.
