Bellingham Washington Visitor Info - Bellingham Washington's Waterfront Welcomes Visitors
Bellingham Washington is known as one of Washington's most livable small cities. Located close to the Canadian border has made Bellingham WA is also popular with Canadian shoppers and day trippers from Vancouver and southern British Columbia.
The city of Bellingham WA has been placed on a number of national best places to live lists and its easy to see why. Bellingham has a wealth of outdoor recreational activities right at its doorstep from skiing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing in freshwater and saltwater, and much more.
The city of Bellingham's Squalicum Harbor is home to a fleet of commercial fishing boats, private yachts, Whale Watching excursion boats. Due to Bellingham's close proximity to the San Juan Islands it also hosts a substantial fleet of charter boats and yacht.
The city of Bellingham has been given a rare opportunity to redevelop a large portion of its waterfront due to the closure of a large paper products factory owned by Georgia Pacific. The large tract of land once owned by paper products giant has been donated to the city of Bellingham. The city lost a major employer but it gained what could be one of Washington State's most amazing new waterfront developments--that is if you could get people to agree on what to do with it.
Does the state really need another children's museum?
Does the state really need another cruise terminal?
Does the state really need another sea life park?
Does the state really need another shopping center?
Does the state really need more luxury condos?
It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens to the waterfront--Stand by.

'The Nature of Borders: Salmon, Boundaries, and Bandits on the Salish Sea' - 1/31/13
Historian Lissa Wadewitz to Present 'The Nature of Borders: Salmon, Boundaries, and Bandits on the Salish Sea' Jan. 31, 2013 at WWU
Contact: Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment at (360) 650-3520.
BELLINGHAM -- Lissa Wadewitz will present The Nature of Borders: Salmon, Boundaries, and Bandits on the Salish Sea, as part of Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 in Bond Hall, Room 105 on Western's campus.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is cosponsored by Western's History Department.
Wadewitz recently published her first book titled, The Nature of Borders: Salmon, Boundaries, and Bandits on the Salish Sea. The book explores the ecological effects of imposing cultural and political borders on a critical West Coast salmon fishery. Wadewitz's new research focuses on the history of Pacific whaling and the emergence of a Pacific World prior to the military expansion of the U.S. across the Pacific Ocean in the late 19th century.
In addition to her book, Wadewitz has published articles in The Pacific Historical Review and Environmental History, as well as chapters in anthologies published by University of Nebraska Press and Duke University Press.
Wadewitz received her doctorate from UCLA in 2004. She then spent a year as a post-doctoral fellow in Native and Newcomer relations at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. In 2005, Stanford University's Bill Lane Center for the North American West awarded Wadewitz a two-year post-doctoral fellow position. The Linfield College History Department then hired Wadewitz as an assistant professor in 2007; she now teaches courses there on U.S. environmental history, Native American history and the history of the U.S. West.
Anyone interested in these topics is encouraged to come and participate. The presentation will include a question and answer period. The speaker series is held by Western's Huxley College of the Environment to bring together the environmentally minded community and other interested members of Western and Bellingham's communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.
For more information, please contact the main office of Huxley College of the Environment, at (360) 650-3520.

Washington Park, Anacortes, WA, USA
Beautiful views of Guemes Channel and Burrows Bay as seen from Washington Park and also the park's famous leaning tree (one of Washington state's most photographed tree) in the historic town of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, Washington, USA during our trip on Sep. 3, 2011.
Washington Park is located on a peninsula at the western tip of Fidalgo Island. The 220-acre city park features camping, a boat launch, and day use picnic sites. The park juts into Rosario Strait on the western edge of Anacortes, offering territorial views. A scenic 2.3-mile one-way loop road winds through the park's forested hills and meadows with views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains. The park offers sweeping views of Guemes Channel on one side and Burrows Bay on the other.
At Sunset Beach, on the north shore, there is a boat launch, restrooms, reservable picnic shelter, playground and open play area. There are 75 campsites, restrooms, showers and laundry services in the overnight area. Picnic sites and car pullouts provide beach access along Green Point, the west shoreline. The loop road is used by cars, joggers, bicyclists and walkers.
Anacortes is the gateway to the San Juan and Vancouver Islands. Downtown Anacortes has over 125 life-sized murals painted by local resident Bill Mitchell. He painted the murals over the last 25 years from historical photographs. His art is on display all over Downtown buildings with depictions of historic scenes. Pick up a free mural map at the Visitor Center located at 819 Commercial Avenue as it is a wonderful way to discover Anacortes.
Anacortes is located 18 miles west of Mount Vernon and about one hour drive from Bellingham to the north and Seattle to the south.
