Jeep trails through Mark Twain National forest. Lewis and Clark Adventures
Lewis and Clark Adventures. A chilly April overcast day we set out to find some jeep trails in the portion of the Mark Twain National forest that sits in Christian County. 2015 Jeep Wrangler 2dr. Lewis and Clark Adventures travels around the Ozarks finding spots that remain mostly untouched since people followed Lewis and Clark out west. If Lewis and Clark would have started their journey a little to the south, this is the landscape they would have seen.

How Science Created The Most Legendary Road Trip
The classic road trip. Your molded grandma’s car, your gruffy friends, a trunk filled with camping gear and canned beans, Bruce Springsteen blasting through the speakers… and no idea where you are going. Stop yourself there. It is better to make a plan and when you are at it: why not plan the ultimate, optimized and most legendary road trip ever to take place?
Randy Olson is a PhD student at Michigan State University, and some time ago - after being snowed in - Randy decided to design an algorithm that effectively solves the braincracker Where Is Waldo? Not long after that Tracy Staedter, editor of Discovery News, contacted Randy if it would be possible to apply this technology to a potential road trip.
Tracy created a list of the 50 must see stops in the States, and the the rules for the road trip are as follows:
1. The trip must make at least one stop in all 48 states in the contiguous U.S.
2. The trip would only make stops at National Natural Landmarks, National Historic Sites, National Parks, or National Monuments.
3. The trip must be taken by car and never leave the U.S.
Next step: Randy adds all the stops to the genetic algorithms. The genetic algorithm starts with a random itinerary, and then tries a bunch of small, random changes to it - maybe moving the Oregon stop in between the California and Washington stops, for example. Eventually it creates the optimized and fastest route, in the right order, through the USA.
See here the interactive version of the road trip. Curious for the hotspots that Randy and Tracy recommend? Here is the full list:
Here’s the full list of landmarks in order:

MIDWEST HOLIDAY 1952 TRAVELOGUE FILM CHICAGO LAKE MICHIGAN MISSOURI NEBRASKA WYOMING 62354
This short 1952 travelogue, presented by Standard Oil Company and produced by Wilding Picture Productions, Inc., follows a road trip though the American Midwest by a Chicago reporter back from assignment in Europe. The film opens with a shot of a street and buildings in Chicago, IL, followed by the door to the Editorial Office of a newspaper. The reporter, Dale Bennett, returns from vacation an meets with his editor to discuss his vacation. Bennett drives his station wagon down a highway (02:10). Bennett swims in Lake Michigan, and then he watches beach cars (dune buggies) racing on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. He walks into a woman painting at an easel on the beach. Bennett pulls into a Standard Oil gas station (03:30), where he buys a finished painting from the woman from the beach (Connie). He pulls up on the side of a road where Connie and her father are stranded with their car and trailer. Bennett gives the car a push start, but Connie’s dad leaves the car without putting it in park, and it rolls down the hill and off the road, crashing into a tree. Bennett pulls the trailer with his station wagon, and the trio arrive at Interlochen, MI. Kids play various instruments at a music camp (07:06). Connie and Bennett sit outside the trailer and chat. A bugler plays “Taps” at sunset with the lake in the background (09:18). Next, they visit Spring Mill State Park, IN, where they see an old water wheel. That is followed by a visit to New Salem State Park, IL featuring the restored old log buildings from the days of Abraham Lincoln (10:12). Viewers see a tugboat on the Mississippi River, a bridge taking the trio into Hannibal, MO (11:00) and the childhood home of Mark Twain, the War Memorial in Kansas City, MO and a view of the city’s skyline, the state capitol building in Lincoln, NE (11:47), Boot Hill Cemetery, and the oil derricks of Oklahoma City (12:20). From there, Bennett, Connie, and her father pass Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains next to Colorado Springs, CO. They drive through Rocky Mountain National Park (12:40), and they take in the views from an alpine lake. There is a good panning shot from Trail Ridge Road (13:18). Next, the film goes to Grand Teton National Park, where the rocky peaks loom over what appears to be Jackson Lake (13:40). They arrive at an entrance to Yellowstone National Park (14:48); footage shows Upper Yellowstone Falls, Old Faithful (15:20), and a black bear next to a road. The ride horses at a dude ranch in Montana and fly fish on a river. Viewers see a wheat field in Montana (16:30), as well as several combine harvesters as they drive through the field. The film shows shots of Mount Rushmore (17:03), South Dakota’s Badlands, and another wheat harvest (in North Dakota). The next place they visit is Minnesota’s Itasca State Park (17:43) with its massive pine trees. Kids play at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Viewers see the Mesabi Iron Range where iron ore is mined (18:07), Duluth and its port on Lake Superior, and a scenic overlook from a Wisconsin highway featuring a lake. A boy and his dog push off from a dock in a canoe (19:05). The trio see more sights, including small falls on Wolf River, Wisconsin Dells, and a dairy farm. The film then shows the entrance to the Iowa State Fair (21:18): Connie and Bennett walk around the grounds, ride a Ferris wheel, and watch a livestock show. Bennett pulls his station wagon and Connie’s trailer into her hometown, a small midwestern town. The film cuts back to the newspaper editor’s office, where Bennett shows his editor Connie’s paintings of the Midwest (23:58). The film concludes with a shot of Bennett and Connie at a bandstand performance at a park in Connie’s hometown.

Arrow Rock Missouri | RV Life
In this episode we are camping at Arrow Rock State Park! We visited the historic towns of Arrow Rock and Blackwater and Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site in Missouri. It was a jam packed and super fun weekend!
The campground is fantastic and we lucked out to get the only full hook up spot. The Visitor's Center has a great museum and is right along the path to the old western town of Arrow Rock. We even got to attend their Night at the Museum event which featured history come to life as actors played the parts of historical figures from the town's past as a primary trail head for the Sante Fe Trail.
We also got the pleasure of visiting another historic old western town, Blackwater, MO. We ended up being there a little too early for many of the shops, but history of the town was on display everywhere and was incredible to take in.
The next day, we were detoured by flooding and ended up visiting Bothwell Lodge near Sedalia, MO. Katie has been dying to seeing this place, with it's fantastic and unique architecture. We couldn't get any video of the interior, but check the blog and our Instagram feed for tons of pictures.
It was a fantastic trip, we all learned so much about the important part western Missouri played in supplying the Old West with important resources. They do a fall festival in October and we are going to try and get back there for that!

St. Louis Mother of two SHot and Killed in Missouri Park
Mark Twain The First Truly American Writer
Samuel Langhorne Clements was born in 1835 in Florida, Missouri. By the time of his death in 1910, he was known around the world as Mark Twain, “the first truly American writer” and the country’s greatest humorist. In his lifetime, he published over 30 books, both fiction and non-fiction, and wrote countless sketches, articles, essays, and letters. He traveled the world and as a lecturer appeared on five continents; biographer Ron Powers has dubbed him America’s “first rock star.”
Mark Twain is one of the few authors whose books were bestsellers in three centuries. Some of his works were also controversial when they were written, and they still are today. But even critics who have a problem with his language and manner do not deny that he is the quintessential American writer.
Mark Twain has become a part of American culture: schools in 16 states are named for him; there are parks, playgrounds, and libraries named for him; a national prize for humor bears his name, as do a number of awards for outstanding literature. “As a legend‚” one author has said, “Mark Twain is alive and well – and almost as well known as he ever was.”
To fully appreciate the writings of Mark Twain, it is important to look at and understand the life of Samuel Clemens – both his successes and his failures. Through interviews with renown Mark Twain impersonator John Pogson, vintage film and photos, this program gives students an opportunity to examine the life of the man who became - and still is - an American icon.
Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Cape Girardeau is a river town with some big stories to tell. A land touched by the likes of Mark Twain, Lewis and Clark, and Ulysses S. Grant. The history of Cape Girardeau flows through its people.
