The Best Small Town Main Street in America
The best small town Main Street in America can be found in Illinois. The former rip-roaring lead-mining town of Galena once produced almost 85% of the nation’s lead, and was the busiest Mississippi River port between St. Louis and St. Paul, a bustle bigger than Chicago. Now, it charm lies in the preservation of its past, one which Galena proudly embraces.
Galena has been cited as having “The Best Small Town Main Street in America,” because it looks like a movie set idealization of Norman Rockwell’s home. Of course, the actual movie theater appeared in the movie Field of Dreams. By the middle of the 19th Century, Galena was one of the richest river towns in the Midwest. But when the lead ran out and the Galena River silted up, the town went into a century-long dive. The townsfolk became too poor to tear anything down. That, it turns out, was its salvation, and today the town appears pretty much as it did when Ulysses S. Grant worked in his father's store on the red-hued street.
Now, that preserved-in-aspic quality is the lodestone, the touro-dollar draw. The street is exuberant with boutiques, bars, reliquaries, art galleries, cafes, ghost tours, trolleys, locals sporting thick, black Ulysses S. Grant beards, and shops specializing in everything “craft.” The old brown brick buildings host handcrafted jewelry, homemade fudge, artisanal cheese, hand-sewn clothing, self-published books, in-house roasted coffee, immaculate confections, stove-popped gourmet popcorn, and, of course, craft beer.

Why invest in Columbus (Ohio) real estate market
One of the determining factors for Ohio’s economic growth in recent years is surely the centrality of its geographical position. The city of Columbus is one of the most important industrial and commercial centers of the US; the city offers easy access to markets, historically low taxes and business-friendly political leadership. The State of Ohio encourages active trade discussions, business development partnerships and investment from businesses based outside the United States. Its world-class transportation system includes eight interstate highways, five international airports, and some of the world's largest public and private airports dedicated solely to cargo shipment.
Real estate investments in Columbus are extremely profitable.

Illinois Adventure #1203 The history of the river town of Beardstown
Beardstown is one of Illinois' older towns, first settled in 1819. The City's founder, Thomas Beard, was from Ohio, and with his friend General Murray McConnel of Edwardsville, arrived at an Indian Mound Village in 1819, located just below Mascouten Bay. French explorers had named the site Beautiful Mound Village because the Indian camp was at the base of large Indian burial mounds. Beard erected a log cabin at the river's edge and began trading with the Indians.
Naperville, Illinois
Naperville is a suburb of Chicago, located in DuPage and Will counties in the State of Illinois. Naperville was voted the second-best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2006. It was rated 1st on the list of best cities for early retirement in 2013 by Kiplinger. In a 2010 study, Naperville was named the wealthiest city in the Midwest and eleventh in the nation with a population over 75,000. It was ranked among the nation's safest cities by USAToday. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 141,853, which was estimated to have increased to 144,864 by July 2013. It is the fifth-largest city in Illinois. Approximately 95,000 Napervillians live on the DuPage County side, while about 50,000 reside on the Will County side.
In July 1831, Joseph Naper arrived at the west bank of the DuPage River with his family and friends to found what would be known as Naper's Settlement.[8] Among those original settlers were Naper's wife Almeda Landon, his brother John with wife Betsy Goff, his sister Amy with husband John Murray, and his mother Sarah. Their arrival followed a nearly two-month voyage across three Great Lakes in the Naper brothers' schooner, the Telegraph. Also on that journey were several families who remained in the still raw settlement that would become Chicago, including that of Dexter Graves who is memorialized in Graceland Cemetery by the well-known Lorado Taft statue Eternal Silence (also known as the Dexter Graves Monument).
By 1832, over one hundred settlers had arrived at Naper's Settlement. Following the news of the Indian Creek massacre during the Black Hawk War, these settlers were temporarily displaced to Fort Dearborn for protection from an anticipated attack by the Sauk tribe. Fort Payne was built at Naper's Settlement, the settlers returned and the attack never materialized. The Pre-Emption House was constructed in 1834, as the Settlement became a stage-coach stop on the road from Chicago to Galena. Reconstructions of Fort Payne and the Pre-Emption House stand as part of Naper Settlement outdoor museum village, which was first established by the Naperville Heritage Society and the Naperville Park District in 1969 to preserve some of the community's oldest buildings.

Ulysses S. Grant Talk at Soulard Market
This is a video of Timothy Good of the National Parks Service speaking about Ulysses S. Grant, our 18th President and former Soulard Market vendor. The original talk was about 30 minutes. Since we couldn't show all thirty minutes, we are just showing you some short clips. It was an amazing talk and Soulard Market was lucky to have him speak. If you ever get the chance, you should try and visit White Haven National Historic Site in Affton, the home of Ulysses S. Grant.

COLUMBIA TN - James K. Polk Presidential Home & Museum | Truly Remarkable Life
I (Craig) took a little bit of a retreat to the country in the form of a road trip between June 23 - 28, 2017 and ended up exploring the Natchez Trace just south of Nashville, TN, I came across the home of the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk. Much to my surprise, it was quite an interesting stop with rare and well-preserved history. The town itself wasn't overwhelmingly beautiful, but it does boast a very Back to the Future -like town square.
I would also recommend driving around within a few blocks of the square to find the beautiful old homes. They are very picturesque.
I was able to stop for photos and antique browsing at the square, and had lunch at the Market Square Café. It was very good, but I'd recommend something other than their signature dish -- the Tennessee Hot Brown. It was interesting, but the menu was so great that I left wishing I'd have tried something that wasn't swimming in alfredo sauce. Okay, so I can say I tried it ONCE.
There is just enough to do in Columbia to make an afternoon of it along your way down the Natchez Trace.
Be sure to look up the Meriwether Lewis historic sight in nearby Hohenwald, TN.
I plan to make it back someday to hit many of the old south plantations and civil war sites that are scattered along the Natchez Trace. In the meanwhile, I thought this would make a fitting Independence Day video! Enjoy!

ILLINOIS LAND OF LINCOLN 1947 EDUCATIONAL FILM CHICAGO MIDWAY AIRPORT 64724
Illinois, Land of Lincoln is a short film produced by Viking Pictures Corporation that recaps the Illinois of Abraham Lincoln and provides an overview the state’s contemporary towns and cities, entertainment, and industries. It opens with a shot of the Capitol Building in Springfield, a statue of Lincoln (00:43), and Lincoln’s log cabin in New Salem (01:38). There are more shots of rural locations in Illinois where Lincoln visited as part of his legal career, as well as shots of the house that Lincoln and Mary Todd purchased (03:42) and of Lincoln’s tomb (05:25). A panoramic view shows rolling farmlands and wooded hills (06:31). The state is famous for its soy bean fields (07:06). A tractor drives through a cornfield (08:04) harvesting corn. People pick red delicious apples in an orchard in southern Illinois (08:30); elsewhere, people harvest grapes and other fruits. Cattle feed at a trough (09:58), and hogs feast on corn (10:10). Minerals are a large resource in Illinois (10:44). The film shows an oil well in a field (11:22), a coal power plant (11:38), and coal from a strip-mining operation being loaded onto trucks (12:04). The film shows residential and commercial buildings, illuminated city streets, and the memorial to the start of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (13:40). An aerial shot shows Chicago’s city skyline (13:45) and is followed by shots of famous streets and buildings in the city, including museums, parks, and the Brookfield and Lincoln Park zoos (15:05). The film then shows a steel factory (16:30), a cattle yard near a meat-packing plant (16:56), and farmers’ trucks gathering at a market (17:57). The state features a number of first-rate medical centers (18:30) and beautiful churches (19:18). Planes are loaded and unloaded with freight at Midway Airport (20:02). The film then shows footage of a Greyhound bus station (21:47), the Illinois Central Station (22:00), and trains running along train lines through cities and next to waterways. Freight is moved on and off of large ships on a Chicago waterway (22:55). Starved Rock State Park (23:50) is a popular place for recreation. People in Illinois also go boating on Lake Michigan (24:25), attend a baseball game (24:42), and enjoy the Apple Festival (25:20), which features a water fight between fire departments. The film takes viewers to the dams and lochs on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers (26:18). This is followed by footage of Peoria (26:43), Rockford, East St. Louis, Springfield, Decatur, Evanston, and Galena. In Champaign-Urbana, fans pack the football stadium and cheer on the University of Illinois football team (29:19). The Illinois State Fair in Springfield (29:57) is one of the three largest in the country. The film shows the racetrack and grandstands, a livestock competition, and the carnival rides lit up at night. The film concludes with a montage of shots of rural Illinois, farms, and other famous sites in the state shown throughout the film.
