Block Island Fast Ferry - Journey From Newport, RI To Block Island
I grew up hearing the annoying radio advertisement, sail away on the Block Island Ferry, come with me to Block Island.
Finally, years later, I had the chance to do it. Luckily, by the time my journey came around, I had the option to depart from Newport, RI in addition to Point Judith.
The Fast Ferry from Newport was exceptional. The tickets were a bit pricey, with an additional fee for bikes, but the quick ride and convenient location made it all worthwhile.
Cruising out of Newport Harbor is amazing. The harbor is mostly filled with leisure boats of all sizes. Bright white yachts with crewmembers scrubbing the decks compete for attention with vintage sailboats and fishing boats.
Newport's great estates are on full display as the Block Island Fast Ferry makes its way past Brenton Point Lighthouse and into Narragansett Bay.
The engines begin to roar as soon as the ferry reaches the open seas. Despite the ferry's relative small size, it's undisturbed by the wake of other vessels.
As the wind picked up, we went inside the cabin and enjoyed a cup of tea. Before we knew it, the coast of Block Island was in sight.
The ferry docks in the commercial area of Block Island, a stone's throw away from the hotels, restaurants, and shops. The Block Island Ferry is a great service, and I'm glad that it's now available from Newport!

Seastreak's NYC 4th of July Fireworks Cruise, 7.4.19
On Thursday, July 4th 2019, I went on a Seastreak boat cruise to see the New York City fireworks for the Fourth of July, along with my parents, my sister, my Aunt Becky, Aunt Inday, Uncle Andy, cousin Matt, and my mom's friend, Aletta.
The boat departed from the Highlands, NJ around 6:30 pm and made its way north out of Sandy Hook Bay, passing underneath the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and eventually settled in the Upper New York Bay, somewhere in between Manhattan and Jersey City.
The fireworks finally began around 9:30 pm and last for nearly half an hour. It was a fantastic display of various explosions and color. Once it was over, our boat headed quickly back to the Highlands and we arrived sometime around 11 pm.
Here's a collection of all the video footage I captured from the boat ride. Enjoy!

Rhode Island is the smallest in area, the eighth least populous, but the second most densely populated of the 50 US states behind New Jersey. Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east, and it shares a water boundary with New York's Long Island to the southwest. It also has the longest official name of all the states.
Rhode Island was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from British rule, declaring itself independent on May 4, 1776, two months before any other colony. The State was also the last of the thirteen original colonies to ratify the United States Constitution.

The state is named after the Massachusett tribe, which once inhabited the east side of the area, and is one of the original thirteen states. The capital of Massachusetts is Boston, which is also the most populous city in New England. Over 80% of Massachusetts's population lives in the Greater Boston metropolitan area, a region influential upon American history, academia, and industry. Originally dependent on agriculture, fishing and trade, Massachusetts was transformed into a manufacturing center during the Industrial Revolution. During the 20th century, Massachusetts's economy shifted from manufacturing to services. Modern Massachusetts is a global leader in biotechnology, engineering, higher education, finance, and maritime trade.Plymouth was the site of the first colony in New England, founded in 1620 by the Pilgrims, passengers of the Mayflower. In 1692, the town of Salem and surrounding areas experienced one of America's most infamous cases of mass hysteria, the Salem witch trials. In 1777, General Henry Knox founded the Springfield Armory, which during the Industrial Revolution catalyzed numerous important technological advances, including interchangeable parts. In 1786, Shays' Rebellion, a populist revolt led by disaffected American Revolutionary War veterans, influenced the United States Constitutional Convention. In the 18th century, the Protestant First Great Awakening, which swept the Atlantic World, originated from the pulpit of Northampton preacher Jonathan Edwards. In the late 18th century, Boston became known as the Cradle of Liberty for the agitation there that led to the American Revolution.
The entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts has played a powerful commercial and cultural role in the history of the United States. Before the American Civil War, Massachusetts was a center for the abolitionist, temperance, and transcendentalist movements. In the late 19th century, the sports of basketball and volleyball were invented in the western Massachusetts cities of Springfield and Holyoke, respectively. In 2004, Massachusetts became the first U.S. state to legally recognize same-sex marriage as a result of the decision in Goodridge v. Evening Talk with Christy Clark-Pujara
Thursday, February 16, 2017
John Carter Brown Library, Brown University
Providence, RI
Christy Clark-Pujara
Assistant Professor of History
Afro-American Studies Department
University of Wisconsin-Madison
As part of the Rhode Island Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project, Dr. Christy Clark-Pujara discusses her recently published book, Dark Work: The Business of Slavery in Rhode Island (NYU Press, 2016). Dark Work examines how the business of slavery — economic activity that was directly related to the maintenance of slaveholding in the Americas, specifically the buying and selling of people, food, and goods — shaped the experience of slavery, the process of emancipation, and the realities of black freedom in Rhode Island from the colonial period through the American Civil War. This talk was organized by the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice and the John Carter Brown Library, with introductory remarks provided by JCB Director and Librarian Neil Safier and Visiting Assistant Professor Matthew Reilly of the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and the CSSJ.
