Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. King's birthday is January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located in West Potomac Park next to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States. It covers four acres and includes the Stone of Hope, a granite statue of Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King carved by sculptor Lei Yixin. The inspiration for the memorial design is a line from King's I Have A Dream speech: Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. The memorial opened to the public on August 22, 2011, after more than two decades of planning, fund-raising, and construction.
This national memorial is the 395th unit in the United States National Park Service. The monumental memorial is located at the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin near the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, on a sightline linking the Lincoln Memorial to the northwest and the Jefferson Memorial to the southeast. The official address of the monument, 1964 Independence Avenue, S.W., commemorates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
A ceremony dedicating the memorial was scheduled for Sunday, August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of the I Have a Dream speech that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 but was postponed until October 16 (the 16th anniversary of the 1995 Million Man March on the National Mall) due to Hurricane Irene.
Although this is not the first memorial to an African American in Washington, D.C., King is the first African American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall and only the fourth non-President to be memorialized in such a way. The King Memorial is administered by the National Park Service (NPS).

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 -- April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.
He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. King is often presented as a heroic leader in the history of modern American liberalism.

This video shows the Martin Luther King Memorial on a warm autumn night. This is a majestic memorial to man who changed the United States. The monument is near the Lincoln Memorial, the Roosevelt Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and across from the Jefferson Memorial. It overlooks the Tidal Basin of the Potomac.

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington or D.C., is the capital of the United States. Founded after the American Revolution as the seat of government of the newly independent country, Washington was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States and a Founding Father. Washington is an important world political capital. The city, located on the Potomac River bordering Maryland and Virginia, is one of the most visited cities in the world.
The USA's capital teems with iconic monuments, vast museums and the corridors of power where politicos roam. The National Air & Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History & Culture, Reynolds Center for American Art & Portraiture – all here, all free.
The National Mall is a large, open park in downtown Washington between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol. The Washington Monument and the Jefferson Pier are near the center of the mall, south of the White House. Also on the mall are the National World War II Memorial at the east end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Directly south of the mall, the Tidal Basin features rows of Japanese cherry blossom trees that originated as gifts from the nation of Japan. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, George Mason Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and the District of Columbia War Memorial are around the Tidal Basin.

The memorial is a result of an early effort of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated to erect a monument to King. King was a member of the fraternity, initiated into the organization via Sigma Chapter on June 22, 1952, while he was attending Boston University. King remained involved with the fraternity after the completion of his studies, including delivering the keynote speech at the fraternity's 50th anniversary banquet in 1956. In 1968, after King's assassination, Alpha Phi Alpha proposed erecting a permanent memorial to King in Washington, D.C. The fraternity's efforts gained momentum in 1986, after King's birthday was designated a national holiday.
In 1996, the United States Congress authorized the Secretary of the Interior to permit Alpha Phi Alpha to establish a memorial on Department of Interior lands in the District of Columbia, giving the fraternity until November 2003 to raise $100 million and break ground. In 1998, Congress authorized the fraternity to establish a foundation—the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation—to manage the memorial's fundraising and design, and approved the building of the memorial on the National Mall. In 1999, the United States Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) and the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) approved the site location for the memorial.
The memorial's design, by ROMA Design Group, a San Francisco-based architecture firm, was selected out of 900 candidates from 52 countries. On December 4, 2000, a marble and bronze plaque was laid by Alpha Phi Alpha to dedicate the site where the memorial will be built. Soon thereafter, a full-time fundraising team began the fundraising and promotional campaign for the memorial. A ceremonial groundbreaking for the memorial was held on November 13, 2006, in West Potomac Park.

MLK day marked at memorial in US capital
(15 Jan 2018) In Washington, DC, tourists and residents honored Martin Luther King Jr. by visiting his memorial Monday.
He needs to be celebrated, every day, not just his birthday, said DC resident
Billy Johnson.
Others took the opportunity to read King's words and to admire his statue.
It proves that you don't have to be physical in order to to have power and to make a change to make a difference, said Maryland resident Brandon Kesselly.
But Kessselly also noted that President's Trump's disparaging remark about African nations and recent actions didn't square with King's message.
It's hard not to realize in some way shape or form that the president and by extension the current administration seemed to be spitting on upon the legacy of Dr. King and the civil rights movement, with a lot of their policy rollbacks.

On Monday, January 19, 2015, Empower DC and the Freinds of McMillan Park marched alongside each other in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, in the spirit of non-violent dissent to the oppression of our voices, municipal participation, and ultimately our lives. The Deputy Mayor's Office of Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) is threatening to sell these 40 acres of public land (Barry Farm and McMillan Park) to corporate developers which will lead directly to displacement and the destruction of deep cultural roots and amazing history of the District of Columbia. Our good ancestor inspires on our fight against despotic civic decision making and poor municipal planning.
