TTQC: My Thrifty Vacation Gear| Plus Size Fashion| Essence Fest| New Edition| Daytona Beach
Hello y'all! Countdown to launch day has officially begun. Thanks so much to my FFSS's (faithful few subbies so far). You guys are the light, now let's spread it around ???? August 1st will be here before we know it!
Had such an awesome time at The Essence Music Festival in New Orleans and then getting my tan on with the family in Daytona Beach, FL. Of course she was thrifted and gifted from head to toe! Mike Bivins said Hey Baby to me *swoons* and I learned some cool history.
Some tips that helped me save coins on this trip:
1. Plan ahead and use a travel agent. Taking this option for our trip to Nawlins allowed us to make easy and affordable payments over time on our trip. And we were pampered by the absolute best agent. Check out Rolanda Chambers, owner/operator of Golden Voyage Travel.
2. Pack a lunch! Honey traveling with 5 full sized humans can get expensive if you are stopping to eat at fast food restaurants. Even the $1 menu adds up! Not to mention it's not the healthiest. For this 7 hr roadtrip I got 2 day old French bread loaves for .80¢ total made subs, filled a cooler with water bottles, had apples and chips for snack. We kept our cooler filled in Daytona instead of buying drinks and hitting up vending machines.
3. Put on your walking shoes! The money we saved on car rentals and transportation allowed us to splurge one night on a really good meal in The Big Easy. Our agent scouted a location that was about 1.5 miles in either direction from the two major venues for the #Essence Fest. We took our time and traveled every day by foot. Sure wish I had a fitbit!
4. Be flexible and fearless. For our family trip to Daytona we knew the dates we'd travel but we left hotel reservations until the day we started driving. Yup, hit up Hotwire.com as we made our way and got a great room at the Baymont Inn & Suites for a total of $110 for 3 nights and that included free wifi, and breakfast each morning.
5. Channel your inner historian. Every time we travel (last year we took a roadtrip to Chi town for The Taste of Chicago), we do our research about historical landmarks, homes, events, and heroes. Many times the historical societies welcome an opportunity to educate and most often for free! In Daytona we visited The Casements, The home and grave of Mary McLeod Bethune, and The Historic Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory all for FREE.
And now from THE THRIFTING QUEEN'S CLOSET:
Goodwill Of North GA, Peachtree Corners- One 5 One dark denim shorts, Yellow Rafaella dress. I paid $6.36 for it and it still had the $100 tag on it!
Salvation Army, Duluth- Pink tank worn under Jlo top
Park Avenue Thrift, Duluth- Dashiki, Old Navy light denim shorts, denim romper, Jlo pink sequined top
Uptown Cheapskates, John's Creek- Coral Crop, Kenneth Cole leather sandals
Kohl's- Yes she shops at retail stores, but only if the price is right! Got the flower and striped black INC. shorts for $3.24!
Gifted (aka...hand me downs...aka...You're not throwing that away are you!?) My swimsuit and the gorgeous orange flowered sundress were both FREE from friends and family that no longer wanted them. #Score
Thanks for watching my loves! Don't forget ✨LIKE. SHARE. SUBSCRIBE✨

Places to see in ( Daytona Beach - USA )
Daytona Beach is a city on Florida’s Atlantic coast. It’s known for Daytona International Speedway, which hosts February’s iconic Daytona 500 NASCAR race. The beach has hard-packed sand where driving is permitted in designated areas. Near the boardwalk’s rides and arcades, Daytona Beach Bandshell stages free summer concerts. Steps from the beach, Daytona Lagoon water park offers go-karts, laser tag and waterslides.
Daytona Beach, famous as the World Center of Racing and home of NASCAR, is part of the East Central Florida greater metropolitan area. Daytona Beach is the best known of the seven area communities. Although the wide 23-mile (37km) stretch of white sandy beach is still the biggest attraction here, with over 8 million visitors flocking to the area every year, the metro area is rapidly changing from event Mecca to family oriented resort destination. Historical sites like the Main Street Pier, the Oceanfront Boardwalk and the Clocktower in Oceanfront Park add to the appeal of this exciting city.
Daytona Beach hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, notably Speedweeks in early February when over 200,000 NASCAR fans come to attend the season-opening Daytona 500. Other events include the NASCAR Coke Zero Sugar 400 race in July, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in late October, and the 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race in January.
The city of Daytona Beach is split in two by the Halifax River lagoon, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and sits on the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered on the north by Holly Hill and Ormond Beach and on the south by Daytona Beach Shores, South Daytona and Port Orange.
The Museum of Arts and Sciences is the primary cultural facility for Daytona Beach and Volusia County. Other museums located in the city include the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Halifax Historical Museum. The Museum of Arts and Sciences is actually a collection of museums and galleries and includes the Klancke Environmental Complex, the Cuban Museum, Root Family Museum featuring one of the largest Coca-Cola collections in the world, the Dow American Gallery and the Bouchelle Center for Decorative Arts which together form what is probably one of the finest collections of furniture and decorative arts in the Southeast. There are also changing exhibitions and a children's science center opened in 2008. Since 1952, the non-profit Daytona Beach Symphony Society has sponsored performances by U.S. and international orchestras, opera and dance companies each season at the Peabody Auditorium.

SUMMARY
=======
Mary Jane McLeod Bethune (born Mary Jane McLeod; July 10, 1875 – May 18, 1955) was an American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian and civil rights activist best known for starting a private school for African-American students in Daytona Beach, Florida. She attracted donations of time and money, and developed the academic school as a college. It later continued to develop as Bethune-Cookman University. She also was appointed as a national adviser to president Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of what was known as his Black Cabinet. She was known as The First Lady of The Struggle because of her commitment to gain better lives for African Americans.Born in Mayesville, South Carolina, to parents who had been slaves, she started working in fields with her family at age five. She took an early interest in becoming educated; with the help of benefactors, Bethune attended college hoping to become a missionary in Africa. She started a school for African-American girls in Daytona Beach, Florida. It later merged with a private institute for African-American boys, and was known as the Bethune-Cookman School. Bethune maintained high standards and promoted the school with tourists and donors, to demonstrate what educated African Americans could do. She was president of the college from 1923 to 1942, and 1946 to 1947. She was one of the few women in the world to serve as a college president at that time.
Bethune was also active in women's clubs, which were strong civic organizations supporting welfare and other needs, and became a national leader. After working on the presidential campaign for Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, she was invited as a member of his Black Cabinet. She advised him on concerns of black people and helped share Roosevelt's message and achievements with blacks, who had historically been Republican voters since the Civil War. At the time, blacks had been largely disenfranchised in the South since the turn of the century, so she was speaking to black voters across the North. Upon her death, columnist Louis E. Martin said, She gave out faith and hope as if they were pills and she some sort of doctor.Honors include designation of her home in Daytona Beach as a National Historic Landmark, her house in Washington, D.C. as a National Historic Site, and the installation of a memorial sculpture of her in Lincoln Park in Washington, D.C. The Legislature of Florida designated her in 2018 as the subject of one of Florida's two statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection.

Congressional Candidate Richard Thripp's Speech at the Mary McLeod Bethune Gala, January 17, 2020
Here is my candidate introduction speech at the 2nd annual Mary McLeod Bethune gala at The Center at Deltona on January 17, 2020, at which Congresswoman Val Demings (D, FL-10) and Representative Anna V. Eskamani (D, FL HD 47) also spoke! I am running as a Democrat for Florida's 6th district which includes Volusia and Flagler counties as well as parts of St. Johns and Lake counties (Daytona Beach, Deltona, Palm Coast, Bunnell, New Smryna Beach, Edgewater, etc.). See for more information.
Good evening everyone. My name is Richard Thripp, and I'm running for the Democratic nomination for United States House of Representatives in the 6th district [of Florida]. Hopefully we'll give Michael Waltz real competition. He had a great competitor last time and we know it's a difficult district, but remember that we've got to get young people involved in politics. We have to raise important issues. And, most importantly, the climate crisis. Our children and grandchildren will look back on us, and they'll say either that we made a change—it looks very late at this time, but there's still time to make a change—or that we let the world go down in flames.
I'm a teacher educator at the University of Central Florida, and I have just completed my Ph.D. in Education last month. I'm 28 years old, and my wife Kristy's in the audience, and we have a 10-month-old baby boy at home. He's got 4 teeth coming in all at once, so he's really unhappy right now. Anyway, you'll be seeing a lot—I don't know if you've seen me online, but people have—but I'm coming out to clubs, and I'm coming out to caucuses and events.
As you know, just yesterday or the day before, Virginia passed the Equal Rights Amendment. It's very historic. This amendment has been basically dormant since 1978. And tomorrow, we'll be marching in Flagler Beach for women's rights, and also, Ambassador Nancy Soderberg will be speaking there too. I know you've got the [Dr. Martin Luther King] breakfast here. We've got lots of stuff going on. But, I look forward to that, I look forward to campaigning, and to raising important issues for this district, for Florida, for the entire country, and for the planet.
Thanks to my wife Kristy for recording this video.
