Hiking Mary Jane Falls Trail in Las Vegas Nevada | Snow at Mount Charleston
???? SUBSCRIBE -
In this video I take you along on my hike through Mary Jane Falls Trail located at Mount Charleston. This hike and beautiful trail is found just under 1-hour outside of Las Vegas Nevada. I visited this trail in April of 2019 and there was still plenty of snow on the ground although it was beginning to melt.
If you are looking for things to do in Las Vegas that are off the strip, then look no further than Mt Charleston especially if you are visiting in the Winter/Spring. Overall this is an excellent hike and I would highly recommend doing it!
My tips for hiking this trail would be:
- Wear Snow Boots if going during times with snow on the ground
- Stay the trail as much as you can to avoid back-tracking
- Bring plenty of water and snacks

Mary Jane Falls Hike Mt Charleston Nevada
A one hour drive from Las Vegas is Mount Charleston. Temperature drops roughly about 20 degrees and it's a great place to hike in the summer and fall. The 2.5 mile Mary Jane Falls Trail is one of the most popular hikes at Charleston. The views all around are spectacular. The Falls itself are nothing to brag about but the cave a little bit past the falls is awesome! Great place to chill and take in the beautiful views. If you ever come out to Las Vegas and you want to get a different change of scenery, I highly recommend coming here and doing this hike. For directions and Hiking info
Mount Charleston Hiking Mary Jane Falls Las Vegas
Highlights:
Steep switchbacks & rock steps to year-round cascading falls, escape from desert
Near: Las Vegas, NV
Scenery:
Distance: 3 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 1200 ft
Hike Time: 2 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Condition: Well maintained trail
Hike Type: Out and Back
Short but very strenuous hike utilizing switchbacks and stone steps (rip-rap) on a very well marked and heavily used trail. Keep your dogs leashed and under control since a lot of hikers seem to bring their dogs on this one. With a very steep trail, loose rock, and netting in place for erosion control, you definitely don't want to cut across this trail. Older children can make this hike, but be sure they are used to climbing and high altitude. There is a nice size cave along the N cliff, to the left of the falls on the left (see photo); with an easy to follow path leading to the mouth of the cave. From the base of the falls you can see Big Falls to the WSW, and Charleston Peak in the background (snow covered until mid/late Spring). This is a pretty trail with ponderosa pines, white fir, aspen, and mountain mahogany. Look for deer and fox in the aspens at sunrise and sunset, near the beginning /end of trail. Hike early to avoid the crowds at Mary Jane Falls. FOLLOW MOUNTAIN DO

CARRIED OFF THE MOUNTAIN!! Mary Jane Falls on Mt. Charleston
Ren, Kandi and I headed up to Mary Jane Falls, on Mt. Charleston to cool off on another very hot day on Lake Mead. Mt Charleston is just north of Las Vegas and is an amazing, outdoor wonderland. It's amazing that this is all less than an hour from the Las Vegas strip.
We hike up to Mary Jane Falls and enjoy the 70 something weather. The falls are split in two and the water is very cold since it is snowmelt.
On the way down, a fellow just in front of me on the trail slipped and badly scraped his arm. At first, I thought he may have broken his arm, but it turned out OK. However, the same can't be said for two ladies below us on the trail. They fell and had to be carried off the mountain by rescue crews. The first gal was already gone when I got down to them, but the second was just being tended to and put on a mountain stretcher with one big wheel.
After getting back down to the parking lot, someone said that one gal slipped and fell down into the other taking them both for a tumble. The side of the mountain was very steep and going off trail not only damages the hill by causing erosion, but it's also dangerous.

Hiking Mt Charleston Mary Jane Falls
After moving from Seattle to Las Vegas my heart still can't accept our Mt. Charleston as a good stand in for any hike I did in WA. Yes, I've been here since 2003, and I am determined to find a hike to love. So far our favorite is the Red Rock Lost Trail/Childrens Hike to the falls with a nice pool of water. My loved Wallace Falls hike may be asking for too much for NV but I'm going to give it a try! My daughters are used to hiking in UT so we're all working with what we have. If you have any hikes we should try, please tell me in the comments!
I doubt Mary Jane will be on the list of cool hikes for me. It was basic to start off with. I do have to say though, there was next to zero litter on the trail. So refreshing! We only passed a few hikers who thought it would be a great idea to drown out the sounds of nature with loud music. I liked the songs, just the wrong setting guys. Keep it classy, it's not hard to respect other peoples experience. It's not all about you :)
The switch backs up the mountain were super easy. My 8 year old ran most of the way up, she stopped for people. Tons of dogs on this trail, I think that was the best part!
If your heading out for a hike, please review trail etiquette via REI:
It seems that many hikers—even experienced ones—may not know or always remember this, but hikers going uphill have the right of way.
This is because in general hikers heading up an incline have a smaller field of vision and may also be in that “hiking rhythm” zone and not in the mood to break their pace. Often an uphill hiker may let others come downhill while they take a breather, but remember that’s the uphill hiker’s call.
If you’re about to pass another hiker from behind, a simple “hello” is often the best way to announce your presence. Remember, many of us can zone out on those long, steep inclines! When passing, always stay on the trail to reduce erosion.
Trail etiquette is even more important when you’re hiking in a group. Always hike single-file, never taking up more than half the trail space, and stay on the trail itself. Over time, those off-trail boot prints can badly erode switchbacks and destroy drainage diversions. When a group meets a single hiker, it’s generally preferable for the single hiker to yield and step safely to the side.
Mary Jane Falls Hike - July 8, 2012
Hiking near Mt. Charleston, 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV.
Hiking Maryjane Falls
My brother, his girlfriend and I took a hike up to Maryjane Falls at Mount Charleston in Las Vegas, NV. It's a pretty steep hike but totally worth it at the end. It was raining so the water was really pouring down the falls.
Mary jane Falls
Memorial Day visit to Mary Jane Falls in the Mount Charleston area. This trail is fairly strenuous, climbing about 1,000 feet in only 2 miles from the trailhead to the base of Mary Jane Falls. The canyon is deep, forested, and surrounded by beautiful gray limestone cliffs. The falls are seasonal; the best flows occur during the spring when the snow is melting.
Mount Charleston Hotel 2017
The lobby area of the Mt Charleston Resort north of Las Vegas on the 95 freeway. The hotel is very comfy and simple, it's relaxing during slow season and the restaurant is not bad.
Mary Jane Falls, Mt. Charleston
The hike to Mary Jane Falls is not easy, but well worth it. Stunning views and the peaceful sounds of the waterfall.
