The Dead Sea is one of the wonders of the world. It is the lowest point on earth and you can
float on its dense salty waters! Where are the best beaches and what do you need to be aware
of?
Ein Gedi is a national park that is home to two spring-fed streams with drinkable water that flow
all year round - Nahal David and Nahal Arugot. A visit to Ein Gedi combines history – there is an
ancient, 6,000-year-old temple, and a beautiful synagogue with a mosaic floor – and wildlife –
there are plants that originally come from Africa, and you get to see animals including the ibex
and the rock hyrax. Ein Gedi is perfect for those who love hiking. Most visitors go for two to
three hours, but there are also longer full-day treks.
Qumran is a small archeological site. I describe it as the most important unimpressive site in the
world. The site is hardly spectacular in itself, but in order to understand it you need to look at the
cliffs all around and know the history of the place. The Dead Sea scrolls were found in the caves
set in the cliffs around Qumran. This is one of the most important archeological finds in Israel
and the world.

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The ancient site of Masada is located in the Dead Sea region, remnants of a spectacular 2000-year old mountaintop village, and the last stronghold of the Judean uprising against the Romans. Today, Masada National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the most popular tourist sites in Israel. Hiking to the top of Masada mountain at sunrise is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have in Israel, and in the Dead Sea region.
The climb to the top of Masada is approximately 350 meters, or 700 steps, and is recommended for those who are in reasonable state of physical fitness. There is also a cable car ride to the top for people who prefer not to climb. Whichever way you get there, enjoy touring the archeological sites at the top of Masada, which include amazingly well preserved remnants of the ancient Jewish-Roman village. Masada is not only important because it's an ancient fortress occupying a breathtaking, strategic location high on a flat plateau above the Dead Sea but because of its symbolic importance as a symbol of determination and heroism which continues to this day with many Israeli soldiers sworn in here.
Masada is one of the greatest archaeological sites in Israel and, perhaps, across the world.
In the year 72, the Romans besieged Masada and succeeded in reaching the steep fortress after constructing a huge earthen ramp on its western side. In the year 73, the 960 Jewish zealots living at the top of Masada chose to commit suicide rather than to fall into the hands of the Romans alive. Their deeds left behind a saga of courage, heroism, and martyrdom.

Visting Ancient Masada Fortress & Floating in the Dead Sea - Israel
Masada is a rugged natural fortress, of majestic beauty, in the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. It is a symbol of the ancient kingdom of Israel, its violent destruction and the last stand of Jewish patriots in the face of the Roman army, in 73 A.D. It was built as a palace complex, in the classic style of the early Roman Empire, by Herod the Great, King of Judea, (reigned 37 – 4 B.C.). The camps, fortifications and attack ramp that encircle the monument constitute the most complete Roman siege works surviving to the present day. After Judea became a province of the Roman Empire, it was the refuge of the last survivors of the Jewish revolt, who chose death rather than slavery when the Roman besiegers broke through their defenses. As such it has an emblematic value for the Jewish people. It is also an archaeological site of great significance. The remains of Herod's palaces are outstanding and very intact examples of this type of architecture, whilst the untouched siege works are the finest and most complete anywhere in the Roman world. The Masada complex, built by Herod the Great, King of Judea, who reigned between 37 BCE and 4 CE, and particularly the hanging palace with its three terraces, is an outstanding example of opulent architectural design, elaborately engineered and constructed in extreme conditions. The palace on the northern face of the dramatic mountain site consists of an exceptional group of classical Roman Imperial buildings. The water system was particularly sophisticated, collecting run-off water from a single day's rain to sustain life for a thousand people over a period of two to three years. This achievement allowed the transformation of a barren, isolated, arid hilltop into a lavish royal retreat. When this natural defensive site, further strengthened by massive walls, was occupied by survivors of the Jewish Revolt against Roman rule, it was successfully besieged by a massive Roman army. The military camps, siege works and an attack ramp that encircle the site, and a network of legionary fortresses of quadrilateral plan, are the most complete anywhere in the Roman world. Masada is a poignant symbol of the continuing human struggle between oppression and liberty.
The Dead Sea (Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח, Yam ha-Melah, Sea of Salt, also Hebrew: יָם הַמָּוֶת, Yam ha-Mavet, The Sea of Death, and Arabic: البحر الميت About this sound Al-Bahr al-Mayyit (help·info)), also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 429 metres (1,407 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean, and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 50 kilometers (31 mi) long and 15 kilometers (9 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River.
The Dead Sea water has a density of 1.24 kg/liter, which makes swimming similar to floating.
Biblical period-
Dwelling in caves near the Dead Sea is recorded in the Hebrew Bible as having taken place before the Israelites came to Canaan, and extensively at the time of King David.
Just northwest of the Dead Sea is Jericho. Somewhere, perhaps on the southeastern shore, would be the cities mentioned in the Book of Genesis which were said to have been destroyed in the time of Abraham: Sodom and Gomorra (Genesis 18) and the three other Cities of the Plain, Admah, Zeboim and Zoar (Deuteronomy 29:23). Zoar escaped destruction when Abraham's nephew Lot escaped to Zoar from Sodom (Genesis 19:21-22). Before the destruction, the Dead Sea was a valley full of natural tar pits, which was called the vale of Siddim. King David was said to have hidden from Saul at Ein Gedi nearby.
In Ezekiel 47:8-9 there is a specific prophecy that the sea will .. be healed and made fresh, becoming a normal lake capable of supporting marine life. A similar prophecy is stated in Zechariah 14:8, which says that Living waters will go out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea (likely the Dead Sea) and half to the western sea (the Mediterranean)...

If you are looking for a day tour from Jerusalem to Masada, the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi, then this video is for you.
There are many companies that offer this tour. I like to recommend the Abraham tours because of a couple of reasons:
* The tour starts here at the Abraham Hostel, and from here they pick up people from Jaffa Gate if it is needed, and they just go.
* Their tour is cheaper. It's about thirty dollars cheaper than most tours. One reason for it is that it is with no guide, it is a self-guided tour. You can download the app here -

* The third reason, the most important reason, is that the drivers are great. Many of them are guides themselves so they do explain a little bit about the sites; they know good English. And the most important thing: they care and, believe me, this is the most important thing.
The ride to Masada takes about an hour and a half and it is an amazing ride. Once you leave the city the desert starts pretty much immediately and you descend from Jerusalem, which is 800m high, to the area of the Dead Sea, which is the lowest place on Earth, 400m below sea level.
The first site is Masada. The entrance costs 29 shekels or 70 if you use the cable car both ways. Either way you need to bring a hat and a bottle of water as it can be really hot.
From Masada it's about fifteen minutes' drive to Ein Gedi national park.
From Ein Gedi it's about half an hour ride then we get to the beach of the Dead Sea.
This tour has two versions:
The regular one, and the sunrise tour that starts either in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, between 2 to 4am, depending on the season, and then you get to Masada very early, climb the Snake Path, and get to see the sunrise from the top of Masada. 4pm we are back in Jerusalem, back to the Abraham Hostel.
