The colors were assigned on August 26, 1965 in conjunction with design standards developed by Cambridge Seven Associates, and have served as the primary identifier for the lines since the 1964 reorganization of the MTA into the MBTA. The Orange Line is so named because it used to run along Orange Street (now lower Washington Street), as the former Orange Street also was the street that joined the city to the mainland through Boston Neck in colonial times; the Green Line because it runs adjacent to parts of the Emerald Necklace park system; the Blue Line because it runs under Boston Harbor; and the Red Line because its northernmost station used to be at Harvard University, whose school color is crimson.
The four transit lines all use standard rail gauge, but are otherwise incompatible; trains of one line would have to be modified to run on another. Orange and Blue Line trains are similar enough that modification of some Blue Line trains for operation on the Orange Line was considered, although ultimately rejected for cost reasons. Also, some of the new Blue Line cars from Siemens Transportation were tested on the Orange Line after hours, before acceptance for revenue service on the Blue Line. There are no direct track connections between lines, except between the Red Line and Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line, but all except the Blue Line have little-used connections to the national rail network, which have been used for deliveries of railcars and supplies. ~Wikipedia

The Green Line is a streetcar system run by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the Boston, Massachusetts area of the United States. It is the oldest line of Boston's subway, which is known locally as the 'T'. The Green Line runs underground downtown and on the surface in outlying areas. With a daily weekday ridership of 237,700, it is also the most heavily-used light rail line in the country. The line was given the green color because it goes primarily though an area called the Emerald Necklace of Boston. The four branches are the remnants of a once large system of streetcar lines, begun in 1856 with the Cambridge Horse Railroad. The Tremont Street Subway carries cars of all branches under downtown, and is the oldest subway tunnel in North America, opened in stages between September 1, 1897 and September 3, 1898 to take streetcars off surface streets.

Commonwealth Avenue (colloquially referred to as Comm Ave by locals) is a major street in the cities of Boston and Newton, Massachusetts. It begins at the western edge of the Boston Public Garden, and continues west through the neighborhoods of the Back Bay, Kenmore Square, Allston, Brighton and Chestnut Hill. It continues as part of Route 30 through Newton until it crosses the Charles River at the border of the town of Weston.
Often compared to Georges-Eugène Haussmann's Paris boulevards, Commonwealth Avenue in Back Bay is a parkway divided at center by a wide grassy mall. This greenway, called Commonwealth Avenue Mall, is punctuated with statuary and memorials, and forms the narrowest link in the Emerald Necklace. It connects the Public Garden to the Fens.

Red Line Subway in Boston
The Red Line is a rapid transit line operated by the MBTA running roughly north-south through Boston, Massachusetts into neighboring communities. From the northwest, the line begins in Cambridge, Massachusetts at Alewife station, near the intersection of Alewife Brook Parkway and Route 2. The line passes through downtown Boston, with transfers to the Green Line at Park Street station, the Orange Line at Downtown Crossing, and the Silver Line at South Station. South of downtown, the line splits at JFK/UMass station, where one branch provides service to Braintree station and the other to Ashmont station. A connection to the Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line extends the reach of the Ashmont branch to Mattapan station.

The Subway of Boston
The subway system has three rapid transit lines—the Red, Orange and Blue Lines, and two light rail lines—the Green Line and the Ashmont--Mattapan High Speed Line (designated as part of the Red Line). The system operates according to a spoke-hub distribution paradigm, with the lines running between central Boston and its environs. All four colored lines meet downtown at a square configuration, and the Orange and Green Lines (which run parallel) meet directly at two stations. The Red Line has two branches in the south—Ashmont and Braintree, named after their terminal stations. The portion from Harvard to Park Street Under represented the city's first rapid transit subway, 1912. The Green Line has four branches in the west—B (Boston College), C (Cleveland Circle), D (Riverside) and E (Heath Street). The Green Line's underground section between Park Street Station and Boylston Street at the Boston Common was the first subway line in the United States, in 1897. The A Branch formerly went to Watertown, filling in the north-to-south letter assignment pattern, and the E Branch formerly continued beyond Heath Street to Arborway. Boston-area public transit system tested during snowstorms
NEWTON, Mass. (AP) -- The hardy side of Boston might not extend to its aging public transit system.On Tuesday, the head of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority staunchly defended her decision to suspend rail service for more than 24 hours as crews struggled to clear tracks of snow and ice and hundreds of thousands of commuters scrambled to make alternative travel plans.The performance during recent storms of the MBTA known in Boston as the T has been criticized by Gov. Charlie Baker and raised questions about whether the aging system can be modernized enough to handle the Olympics should Boston succeed in its bid to host the 2024 Summer Games.Officials announced that subways, trolleys and commuter rail trains, idle since Monday night, would resume Wednesday at a reduced level. Passengers were warned to expect fewer cars and less frequent service on most lines of the nation's fifth-largest and oldest system. The first underground subways in the U.S. began in Boston in 1897.We are running an extremely aged system that is getting a pounding every single day, said Beverly Scott, MBTA general manager. She acknowledged that riders are frustrated as heck. They are mad as heck. She said she hasn't spoken directly to Baker since the onslaught of winter storms began more than two weeks ago.Scott said she could not guarantee the system would run smoothly if more snow falls as forecast later in the week, adding to the 7 feet already on the ground in some places.Transit stations around the region, normally jammed with commuters on a weekday, were eerily silent Tuesday.The sprawling Riverside MBTA station in suburban Newton was virtually empty except for a handful of plows and workers trying to clear away snow.A few people who hadn't heard the news of the shutdown were surprised to learn there were no trains, including 91-year-old Bernard Udin, who walked several blocks to the station and planned to take a trolley to Newton Highlands to run some errands and visit the library.I'll go back home I guess, Udin said. What else can I do?The subway station at Davis Square in Somerville was padlocked, and some businesses in the neighborhood were closed.The fact the trains aren't running means no one is heading to work, said Jeff Brussel, who was trying to find one of the few buses still operating that could get him to Boston. But I'm on a project with a deadline, and everyone is freaking out. So I'm going to do what I can.Scott said she made the call to shut down rail service in part after dozens of trains broke down Monday after losing contact with the electrified third rail, including one in which passengers were stranded for more than two hours. She said upgrading the system would require more investment in new equipment.Scott was appointed in 2012 after managing transit systems in Atlanta, Sacramento and Rhode Island and holding leadership positions in others including the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York.I have been around 40 years. We all know that the effects of global warming are getting worse. This will not only lead to environmental degradation, but also the declining nature of human health, as well as animals and plants. A big reason for global warming is greenhouse gas emissions. Take Boston for an example. In Boston, about three million people use cars as their main modes of transportation every day. The greenhouse gases the city produces have a negative impact on the local environment and the health of residents.
On the contrary, subways powered by electricity does not emit greenhouse gases, has a large carrying capacity, and will not suffer from traffic jams. This mode of transportation is being welcomed and sought after by more and more countries and regions.
Compared to the old subway in Boston, the city’s new subway vehicle developed by CRRC not only eases local traffic pressure, but also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The trains on the new orange and red line subway lines makes full use of more environmentally friendly raw materials and environmentally friendly designs to improve energy efficiency and maximize environmental benefits. We believe that with more of such new trains, we can promote green travel and drive the development of related new and clean energy industries. On the other hand, we also hope that this will protect the local flora and fauna.
Boston's new trains are not only a “green business card” for CRRC to the world, but we also hope to take this opportunity to make greater contributions to improving the global environment.

While I was in Boston for PAX East 2013, I was able to check out the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Fleet along with some other stuff on the side.
What you'll see here is some Orange Line action with the 01200 series cars operating in and out of State Station. Here, you can transfer over to the Blue Line which runs between Bowdin and Wonderland Stations.
