Spanning a little over 2 miles through the heart of Grand Cayman's east end, the Mastic Trail is a great hiking trail.
Ben and I hiked from the south end off Frank Sound Rd, starting the hike off with a little picnic.
This was our second time doing the trail. We once again forgot to bring enough water, but there was a beautiful breeze to get us through.

Yellow mastic tree thrives
The trek to see one of Grand Cayman’s most notable trees will take you over a harsh and unforgiving forest floor strewn with hardened rock and gnarled tree roots. Here, the plants have no soil to give them nutrients, and the trees have endured repeated battering by storms over the centuries.
The Mastic Trail, named for the native yellow mastic tree, provides a glimpse to a part of Cayman that has existed in its present form for millions of years. And in the middle of the trail, there’s a majestic specimen of yellow mastic that has likely been standing since the days of Christopher Columbus.
The path to the yellow mastic begins at the northern trailhead, and the walk commences in a bit of field that was previously used as a cow pasture. But the deeper you get on the trail and the further you get from the main road, you progress into older forests and walk into a more alien environment.
For the first residents of Cayman, the Mastic Trail would look much as it did today. There are some non-native trees planted by people in the early stages of the trail, but the latter stages are pretty much unaltered, said Stuart Mailer, the environmental programs manager for the National Trust.
“They might have been interested in doing a bit of logging, but it was such a distance to carry out any trees that they’d cut. So it was pretty much left alone,” said Mr. Mailer of the old growth forest. “It’s in about the same state it would’ve been when Christopher Columbus arrived at the island.”
The National Trust has been trying to acquire much of the Mastic Trail land for preservation, and to current date, it’s been able to purchase about 840 acres out of 1200 in its intended target area. The trail is barely wide enough for one person to walk in most areas, and it’s framed by lush vegetation. Read the full story at caymancompass.com.

The Cayman Islands are an autonomous British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean Sea. The 264-square-kilometre territory comprises the three islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, which are located to the south of Cuba and northeast of Honduras, between Jamaica and Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. As of spring 2018, the population of the Cayman Islands was estimated to be 64,420 making it the second-most populated British overseas territory after Bermuda. The capital city is George Town, situated on Grand Cayman, by far the most populous of the three islands.
Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and the location of the territory's capital, George Town. In relation to the other two Cayman Islands, it is approximately 75 miles (121 km) southwest of Little Cayman and 90 miles (145 km) southwest of Cayman Brac.
Grand Cayman Island has a number of natural attractions: the blow holes in the East End district, the Mastic Trail that runs north to south through the center of the island, Hell in the West Bay, and the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park.
Watersports such as scuba diving and snorkeling are popular activities on Grand Cayman as the island is known for its coral reefs and underwater sea walls along with a number of shipwrecks.
Because of its clubs, resorts, and hotels, Seven Mile Beach has the largest concentration of visitors and tourists on the island.
There are just under 600 banks and trust companies in the Grand Cayman, including 43 of the 50 largest banks in the world.[8] Because of this large financial presence on the island, banking, investments, and insurance drive the economy in Grand Cayman.[
