Kusama Yayoi, Matsumoto City Museum of Art, 2018
World famous Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, born in 1929 here in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, is now 89 years old. Masumoto is holding a special citywide exhibition from March 3 to July 22, 2018. Today, I’ll introduce how to walk around and enjoy her works scattered around Mastumoto city. They are all within walking distance.

Matsumoto Museum of Art - Quick Review
The Matsumoto Museum of Art has beautiful exhibits, great atmosphere, and is very easy to get to from downtown Matsumoto. Since many of the permanent exhibits are for people from or associated with Matsumoto, it’s a great place to get a feel for the city’s character. This museum might only take a couple of hours to go through, but I recommend making a little extra time to relax in the museum’s plaza. It’s also only a 10 minute walk to Agatanomori Park from the museum, so it’s a great idea to visit them back-to-back.
Highlights:
- Yayoi Kusama’s interior and exterior exhibits alone are worth the trip.
- I found Tamura Kazuo’s multi-frame landscapes captivating.
- There’s an area in Kamijo Shinzan’s exhibit where you can make your own calligraphy prints.

The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late sixteenth century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.

Japan trip 2013 - Day11 - Matsumoto
Today was a good day to catch a breath and take it easy in the laid back city of Matsumoto. I just walked around the city for a bit, visited the castle Matsumoto-jo, also called Karasu-jo (the colors resemble a crow). The tour by the volunteers there was really nice, they even did it in english! After that I went to the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. Some very cool expositions there (including Yayoi Kusama) and lot's of local art. Tomorrow I'm off to Takayama!

The Japan Ukiyoe Museum (Nihon Ukiyoe Hakubutsukan) exhibits ukiyoe (woodblock prints) from the vast collection of the Sakai family. One of Matsumoto's wealthiest merchants of his time, Sakai Yoshiaki started collecting ukiyoe and other pieces of art dating back to roughly 300 years ago. His descendants have been enlarging the collection to over 100,000 pieces, making it one of the world's largest private art collections.
In contrast with the size of the collection and the museum building, the number of works exhibited in the Japan Ukiyoe Museum is rather small. One reason is because of the fact that the building was originally built only for storage rather than exhibition purposes. Only brief information in English is provided for the exhibits.

The Japan Ukiyoe Museum is located about three kilometers outside of Matsumoto's city center, close to Matsumoto Interchange of the Nagano Expressway.
The museum can be reached in a 10 minute taxi ride from Matsumoto Station (about 1500 yen from the station's Alps Exit) or in a 15-20 minute walk from Oniwa Station on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line (5 minutes, 170 yen from Matsumoto Station).

Natürlich ist Matsumoto berühmt für seine Burg, aber es gibt noch ein Paar andere Dinge zu erleben. Wer etwas mehr Zeit mitgebracht hat, kann im Matsumoto Art Museum Werke Japanischer Künstler bewundern. Eine der berühmtesten Töchter der Stadt ist sicherlich Yayoi Kusama, deren Arbeiten sich besonders durch die konsequente Darstellung von Polka Dots auszeichnen. Da sie in Matsumoto geboren wurde, hat sie die Gestaltung der Außenfassade des Museums übernommen und gleich wieder ihr Markenzeichen zum Einsatz gebracht.
