Travel alongside Richie Hawtin as he explores Japan discovering the different unique approaches to brewing the perfect sake and infusing himself in the heart of Japanese culture in an effort to bring an authentic taste of Japan beyond its borders, and beyond the walls of ENTER.Ibiza.
THE STORY
RICHIE HAWTIN announces plans to launch his boutique Japanese Sake collection ENTER.Sake in Europe and the USA, beginning with an exclusive launch at New York’s celebrated restaurant TAO Downtown.
Hawtin first launched ENTER.Sake in 2012 at ENTER. in Ibiza. What started as a wish to share his passion for Sake and Japanese culture with friends after twenty years of travelling, working, and tasting sake in Japan, led to the launch of Ibiza’s first true sake bar experience, the creation of Hawtin’s own boutique ENTER.Sake collection and one of the most-anticipated pre-parties on the island.
This summer ENTER.Sake makes its US debut, with an exclusive launch at New York restaurant TAO Downtown, the first time ever that Hawtin’s Sake and Shochu brand, created with the Matsumoto Sake Brewery in Kyoto, will be available outside of Ibiza.
ENTER.Sake arrives at TAO Downtown with two variants:
ENTER.Black by Richie Hawtin for TAO Downtown
Matsumoto (Shihari Junmai) Kyoto. Balanced, lifted and zippy, medium dry.
ENTER.Gold by Richie Hawtin for TAO Downtown
Matsumoto (Junmai Daiginjo) Kyoto. Edgy, refined, complex.
These ENTER.Sake options have been personally selected by Hawtin for TAO Downtown, following his extensive trips to breweries throughout Japan. They mark the first in a whole line of sake and shochu that ENTER.Sake plans to release in USA and Europe, with the hope of introducing people around the world to the taste, culture and history of Japanese Sake.
Hawtin, himself a trained Sake professional, will host an exclusive invite-only evening at the restaurant on Friday 26 September, to celebrate the launch of ENTER.Sake at TAO Downtown.
“This is a proud moment for me as our ENTER.Sake project evolves with our first project outside of Ibiza with the introduction of the ENTER.Matsumoto Sake selection at the new TAO Downtown restaurant in New York. Sake has been an integral part of the success of the ENTER.Ibiza events and with Jason Strauss’s & Naoh Tepperberg's similar love of Japanese Food, Sake & Electronic music, this partnership makes perfect sense. The new TAO restaurant is the right place for ENTER.Sake first steps into North America market and helps continue our combined commitment to bring the best quality Japanese Sake to a wider audience. With ENTER.Matsumoto we bring the the heritage of the Matsumoto brewery and culture of Kyoto one step closer to the rest of the world. A delicious and exciting new chapter to the developing ENTER.Sake story.” -Richie Hawtin

ENTER.Sake Tour October 2014
In October 2014 we went back to Japan for our second annual ENTER.Sake Shiboritate tour visiting old friends and searching for new tastes for our 2015 ENTER.Sake collection for ENTER. Over a week we met with MATSUMOTO, SOOKUU, ARAMASA & HOURAISEN 関谷醸造株式会社社 Breweries, visited our friends at JAM HOSTEL Kyoto Gion and SAKE TO SAKANA in Tokyo and made a very important ceremony in Kyoto where I was privileged to receive an award from the SAKE SAMURAI Association 酒サムライサポーターズクラブ. We also held a special ENTER.Sake tasting with a selection of breweries in Tokyo organized by our friends at ESQUE (@YukiFukui).

A Visit to Takayama Old Town & Attractions Japan
On our visit to Takayama City in Japan, we visited various tourist attractions.
The most popular of course is the beautiful Takayama Old Town where you can find various Sake breweries around. We also visited the government building and shrines.
Takayama is pretty touristy but is a great place to explore! Make sure you try out the Takayama Hida Beef, but there is also plenty of other delicious Takayama food to try!
Japan Trip (2017) - Chapter 9: Takayama (Morning markets & sake breweries!)
Takayama is a town located in the Gifu prefecture. It is known for its yearly Takayama Matsuri Festival, where festival floats are displayed in the streets of the city. It occurs twice a year, once during spring and the other time in autumn. Spoiler warning: I'm not going to see it! Turns out it happens on the 10th. I've arrived a bit too early to Takayama!
With that said, there is still a lot to see in the city! Once again, I arrived very late in the city. I settle in a guest house, and this one is reminiscent of what we call a capsule hotel. You get a cabin with a futon in it and that's it! Also, damn that guy snoring!!!!!
Anyways, after that, the best thing to do is just walk around at night and go eat! The ramen that I ate there was very good. Every region has different noodles, and these ones, Takayama noodles, were more wavy and less thick. It makes you taste the broth more in my opinion.
During the morning, there are two morning markets at two different locations where locals sell food and other kinds of stuff. I went to both of them to see how they look! The first one is close to Takayama Jinya and the second one is in Miyagama. They both happen from 7 to 12 am.
While I'm going to miss the festival, at least I got to see another special market that only occurs once a year: the Antique Market! You can find a lot of old stuff there!
After that, I went to see ruins of two castles: Ayasaki's and Takayama's. It's nothing extraordinary though: there's only a few rocks left! They are now parks more than anything. You get different views of the city from the top of both parks!
Other than the markets and parks, you can also find the Old Town. This region of the city has a lot of sake breweries! I definitely tried some of it! It tastes sweet compared to the ones we have over here! It was a great experience!
Once again, I saw plenty of shrines and temples in Takayama, more than any other city actually. Many worship a multitude of gods. For those who didn't know, shrines are Shinto, and temples are Buddhist.
Remember that festival I was talking about? It didn't stop me from going to the museum to learn more about it (and wish I could actually be there when it happens!)!
My last stop was in Hida Folk Town. It isn't necessarily in Takayama, but it was so close by foot that I had to go! It's basically an old village that you can visit and you can learn more about the history of the people that lived in Hida during the 17th century.
That's it for Takayama! It was a small & beautiful city. Walking around is easy and you can get to most of places I went to quite easily from the station.
Enjoy the video log! I felt a bit emotional making this one (no joke!).

JAPAN TRAVEL: OBUSE! Day 16
A calm and quiet day in the little village of Obuse south of Nagano: famous for sake and chestnuts. Not many foreigners here, which always pleases us. We sample locals wines, liquors and sakes, have an intriguing lunch in a shack, head out to some temples, grab some chestnut ice cream and then attack the sake again.
We consumed:
Wines, liquors at Alex's Country Store and St Cousair Winery
Sake at Masuichi-Ichimura Brewery
Ramen at Nagano Donabe Takesan
Chestnut ice cream at Obuse-an
A charming little place and well worth a visit if you're in the Nagano area or in Kanazawa.

Japan Trip (2017) - Chapter 8: Matsumoto (Japanese castle, Frog street & Aeon Mall!)
Alright, new city, new video format! This time, I've decided to not add any subtitles and let the video do the talking! For details, read below:
The place I've wanted to visit the most, Matsumoto! According to the locals, the city is getting more and more popular amongst tourists these days! Located in the Nagano prefecture, it is a bit more urban compared to Hakone, even though it is very remote from Tokyo and the other big cities. It's called a City Town in the local's terms!
I've arrived pretty late to the city, so the first thing I did was put my stuff at Jankie's place and walk around downtown. There is a street very similar to Shinjuku's streets, and this is also where you find the best izakayas (bars) around here! I went to the famous Golden Bar. They had an interesting menu to say the least!
The landmark of the area is Matsumoto Castle, and it really is beautiful! You can also visit it completely from the inside. Going up the stairs is really dangerous let me tell ya! There is also a museum right next to the castle. It tells the history of Matsumoto as a castle town and even more.
There is one particular street called the Frog Street, because of its meaning to Matsumoto. On this street, you can also find the biggest shrine of the city, Yohashira Shrine. The street is divided by the beautiful Ta River.
For diner, I went to visit the newly opened pride of Matsunoto, the state of the art Aeon Mall! It may seem stupid to go there, but when you get a Aeon Mall in your city that's when you know you've made it!! You also get a nice view of Matsumoto city from the outdoor top floor parking.
Finally, I go visit the oldest school in Japan, Kaichi School. It is another important landmark of the area. The new Kaichi elementary school of the citu is right next to it now!
Matsumoto was beautiful, but next time I will visit the snow alps just outside the city. Apparently, it is another area worth visiting. I can't wait to come back one day!
Enjoy the video!

Nine Days in Japan
I traveled to Japan in October 2016.
magicwayne.com
facebook.com/aboutmagic
youtube.com/aboutmagic
With the exception of the first day (Shibuya District and Edo-Tokyo Museum), I traveled with Trafalgar’s “Splendours of Japan” tour that provided an excellent experience.
Our guide, Yukako Yuka Hashizume, was among the best that I have toured with. She was friendly and always made the extra effort to make our trip the best it could be. She was very knowledgeable about Japanese culture, history, lifestyle, economics and more. She is among an elite group of outstanding travel guides.
I booked the trip through Desirae Fuentes of AAA Travel. The service was first rate and I can highly recommend both Desirae and AAA.
Note that there are numerous sites that are not shown in my video. The video was getting too long and for some sites, I didn't have adequate video or photos (some sites don't allow cameras). Also, I make no mention of the many included meals that are a big part of the experience.
The accommodations were all first rate. The only downside was that our stay in Takayama at the Takayama Green Hotel found many of us in smoking rooms which was unpleasant for non-smokers. The transportation was prompt and the drivers efficient and courteous.
Tours such as this offer the advantage that you don't have to worry about transportation – navigating a train system in a foreign country and language, and all of the accommodations and entrance fees are already paid. The locations are already chosen for you by experts to give you a broad experience. All you have to do is go along for the ride. Furthermore, a lot of meals are included.
On the downside, you often find yourself without enough time to fully explore a location. There's a justifiable need to stay on schedule. For example, at Kenrokuen Gardens, the Kanegawa Castle, with it's compelling moat and outer walls, beckoned us from across the street. If you're on you're own, you can simply cross the street and check out the destination. And sometimes, you encounter memorable experiences and locales. In our case, we could only wish and had to get on the bus.
Of note, there's a longer version of the trip that includes a ride on the Shinkansen “bullet” Train and Hiroshima. Based on my experience, I can easily recommend Trafalgar's Splendours of Japan to anyone who wants to experience Japan.
This trip includes visits to: Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Hakone, Takayama, Shirakawago Valley, Kanazawa, and Kyoto.

TAKAYAMA || EP 16 || Exploring the Streets of Takayama
Takayama is an ancient city where you can feel the warmth of wood and people located 3.5 hours by train from Nagoya station, a hub station of Central Japan.
This town commands a view of the mounts of Hida, known as the “Japan Alps”, and is called “little Kyoto in Hida” since it has many temples and shrines as well as wooden houses, craft shops and sake breweries.
We’ve found this little friendly shop that sells peanuts coated in Japanese famous flavours such as green tea, black sesame and red beans. It’s powdery and tasty on the outside and really crunchy on the inside.
Will you join me?
