A multimedia dance performance that connects memories of the past, present, and future
- Notes for the world premiere of HILUM -
HILUM :
1. Botany - the mark or scar on a seed produced by separation from its funicle or placenta.
the nucleus of a granule of starch.
2. Mycology - a mark or scar on a spore at the point of attachment to the spore-bearing structure.
3. Anatomy - the region at which the vessels, nerves, etc., enter or emerge from a part.
This production is a live performance to share a new memory in the present moment and to connect past and future memories about the land.
In the playground of the abandoned Kawakami junior high school, there suddenly appears a stark-white hexagonal pillar which is alien to the surroundings of Kawakami’s deep nature.
The object looks like the earth’s navel or a window to another dimension. Various images, some of them alien to the land while others awake memories of the land, are projected onto the object. There, six performers dance as if they are laying a trail of new memories and then, as if they are reeling in old memories.
Electronic sounds, buzzing airwaves, and sounds from a distant land meld with the ambient sounds on the stage until they become indistinguishable from each other. There emerges a soundscape that has never been heard there before or since. The next moment, drums are beaten as if to drive the dancers.
Through the experience of this setting called performance, the audience will perceive the past, present, and future not as ‘upper case history’ but as a calm and incessant flow of time and will realize that he/she exists to constitute the memory of this time and this place.
Following the resident production and premiere in Kawakami, the piece will then be performed without any alteration, at special places in and out of Japan that are filled with history and memories as deep and still as those of the old Kawakami junior high school are.

The Guy From Pittsburgh. Episode # 651. Japanese think robot sexier than real woman !
A robot has been created that is so life-like it fooled one-in-two people into thinking it was a real human.
But not only has the lifelike device been mistaken for a real person - she's also been deemed 'sexy' by those who have seen her.
Named Actroid F, the 5ft 6in machine looks like a human being, blinks, responds to eye contact and recognises body language.
Robots are being built that look more and more convincing so researcher Dr David Silvera-Tawil wanted to find out if Geminoid F can be told apart from an actual person.
Footage of this particular robot was originally released online in 2010, but recently viewers have been taking to YouTube to express their opinions on the life-like device, with many saying they find the doll 'sexy'.
One viewer wrote: I wish they had these before I married my ex-wife.
Another added: Is it weird if I think she's cute?
But while some found the robot attractive, others were fearful and uncomfortable after being unable to tell whether the woman was real or not.he geminoid - so-called because it is an identical replica of humans and operates remotely - was developed by renowned robot designer Professor Yoshio Matsumoto at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tokyo.
Dr Silvera-Tawil, a Mexican-born roboticist, said he also wanted to discover if the rapidly emerging industry would benefit from manufacturing androids despite frightening people or if it's better to continue with less life-like machines.
The Mexican-born robotocist, of New South Wales University, said once the experiment was carried out people's reactions and responses to questionnaires showed when they came into contact with geminoids they felt anxious, nervous and even fearful.
In the first experiment Actroid F and a person were seated next to each other - both wearing the same outfit - and a participant had five seconds to identify which one of the two was a real human.
The next part involved two humans sitting side by side - and roughly half the participants said they could not confirm who the robot was, said Dr Silvera-Tawil.
The investigation is not over and he said the next step is to study if a human being can get used to interacting with android geminoids in the long-term by reducing the fear and anxiety they produce.

UNA 2013 - An Eco Friendly Bamboo Luminaire Collection
The project una 2013 is implemented by University of Moratuwa and Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) with the objective of identifying and uplifting unseen entrepreneur's in rural areas & emphasizing the importance of design involvement and marketing to enhance the living standards & maximize profit.
On top of the fascinating creativity and rich tradition behind the bamboo crafting in Sri Lanka, today it is haunted by the shadows of less interest, less profit and less enthusiasm. As it is understood, the situation is mainly a result of the draining of creativity. With the proper involvement of Design, Design strategy and Marketing, the bamboo production will be turned to a sensible function of deliberate outcome.
The project una 2013 plans to introduce the craftsmen of Kuruwita and Yatiyantota to a range of products that goes beyond the conventional and monotonous furniture designs, applying problem solving methods in creating bamboo goods. As a setback in omitting the repetitiveness in design, the craft of hand-loom will be adjoined to a variety of products intended. This will encourage on different approaches from the grass root level technology to reach new possibilities and opportunities of the material.
The project is revolving around the points of social and market. With the considerations to human behaviors, the designs will respond to their individual involvement in the culture and society. Through the latter response the products will be able to find better placements in the market leading to better profits. The project in the ultimate stage will develop in to an event in the commercial Colombo, setting better exposure for the skilled craftsmen to popularize their creations approaches.
By the project implementation it is hoped that the bamboo craft community of the country will gain a boost through design association and it will be a path through the social responsibility for the all parties involved.
