Dinosaurs of the Lost Continent | Dr. Scott Sampson
Paleontologist Dr. Scott Sampson's public lecture about the ancient lost continent of Laramidia and the remarkable dinosaurs that lived there.
For more than a century, paleontologists have been collecting abundant, often spectacular dinosaur fossils from the Western Interior of North America, with the bulk of these remains found in rocks dating to the final stages of the Cretaceous Period. Only recently have we learned that most of these dinosaurs—among them horned, duck-billed, dome-headed, and armored plant-eaters, as well as giant tyrannosaur meat-eaters and smaller “raptor-like” predators—existed on a “lost continent,” today referred to as “Laramidia.
About 96 million years ago, exceptionally high sea levels flooded central North America, resulting in a north-south oriented seaway extending from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. This shallow sea isolated life-forms on the eastern and western landmasses for most the next 26 million years.
We know little of what happened on the eastern landmass, but its western counterpart, Laramidia, witnessed a tremendous florescence of dinosaurs and other Cretaceous life-forms. Surprisingly, despite the small size of Laramidia (less than one-quarter the size of present day North America) and giant sizes of many of the dinosaurs, different species co-existed in the northern and southern regions, at least during certain intervals. How were so many giant animals able to co-exist on such a diminutive landmass? Why were most of these dinosaurs adorned with bizarre bony features such as horns, crests, domes, or spikes? What lessons do these ancient fossils have for humans living on a warming planet?
U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, United States, North America
The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaiʻi is housed inside Battery Randolph, a former coastal artillery battery, located at Fort DeRussy Military Reservation. The museum's collection contains some World War II armor pieces, an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, and small arms indoors, as well as the battery itself. The battery's main guns were scrapped prior to the inception of the museum. Museum exhibits cover the military history of pre-Imperial Hawaii and the post-annexation history of US Army warfare in the Pacific hemisphere including World War II, Vietnam, and Korea. The museum also includes a Gallery of Heroes honoring recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross.
The museum shares space with the public information office of the US Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Division, which exhibits information about key Army Corps projects in Hawaii and the Pacific region. Admission is free, and the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday. It is located on Kalia Road, coordinates 21°16′44″N 157°50′1″W adjacent to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Parking in the adjacent Hale Koa Hotel is discounted but intended for DoD/military ID holders; non-DoD civilians may park in the Hawaiian Village.

493-The Tragedy at Oak Creek, A Special Place Remembered
This is a story of returning to the Oak Creek, California area 10 years after a natural tragedy occurred there. This place will always be a special for me and takes me back to my younger years in the Eastern Sierra.
This area had been burned in an intense, lightning sparked range fire in July 2007 destroying the Ashworth Ranch.
On July 12, 2008 tropical moisture moved through here causing thunderstorms and pockets of intense rain.
In the late afternoon, a cell of intense rain was centered in the eastern sierra Baxter Pass area, just west of this location.
Around 5 pm, water, sediment, and debris began moving down tributaries in the Oak Creek drainage area, eventually concentrating in the north and south forks of Oak Creek.
At about 5:30 pm a hyper-concentrated flow destroyed a motorhome parked here at the Oak Creek campground on the north fork of Oak Creek, and its sole occupant jumped into the flow but he managed to survive.
By then, the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery had been severely damaged along with several Fish and Game employee residences.

Beyond Mastodons & Mammoths: Scientific Understanding from the Snowmass Ice Age Discovery
Stephanie Lukowski, Paleontologist, Snowmass Ice Age Discovery Center
What was Snowmass like during the last interglacial period? As a result of the geologic and fossil data collected during the Snowmastodon excavation at the Ziegler Reservoir in 2010-11, scientists were able to reconstruct the ecosystem during the Sangamon interglacial period. Stephanie Lukowski of Snowmass Ice Age Discovery will take an in depth look at the geologic history of the Ziegler Reservoir and the fossil plants and animals featured in the paleoenvironmental reconstruction to explain how the past ecosystem changed in response to the climate of that time.
Speaker Bio: Stephanie Lukowski grew up in the Chicago area, where as a high school student, she volunteered at the Field Museum of Natural History. She received her Bachelor’s degree in geology from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Subsequently, she obtained her Master’s degree in vertebrate paleontology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Her graduate research focused on Paleocene-age mammals from the Crazy Mountains Basin in Montana. She has worked extensively in the field, with sites ranging throughout the western United States and Panama as a part of the Panama Canal Project with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the University of Florida. Stephanie is excited to be a part of the Ice Age Discovery Center, and welcomes any questions regarding the discovery in Snowmass, paleontology and geology.

Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway and Morpho Madness
The dinosaurs are here! Take a prehistoric road trip through the Florida Museum of Natural History's newest temporary exhibit, Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway with Artist Ray Troll and Paleontologist Kirk Johnson, through Sept. 3, 2012.
The exhibit features 30 fossils, including complete skeleton casts of the three-horned Triceratops dinosaur, and Albertosaurus, a carnivore that lived about 70 million years ago. The fossils complement 19 color prints and five large-scale murals by Troll, created for the book Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway, by Troll and Johnson. Visitors also can observe Florida Museum scientists in a functioning paleontology lab preparing fossils collected during research projects from around the world.

An Exotic Visit to the Butterfly Pavilion, Denver
Visit to see more
The Butterfly Pavilion is home to thousands of living animals called invertebrates. These animals share a common characteristic - they have no backbone! 97% of all animals species on the planet are invertebrates, and our collection represents nearly every habitat on earth. We are an invertebrate zoo featuring mostly arthropods. Arthropods have three distinctive characteristics - they have an exoskeleton, segmented bodies, and jointed attachments called appendages.
During your visit you'll meet many different types of invertebrates. From the tropical butterflies in our rainforest to sea stars at the Water's Edge, these animals will amaze you with their variety and impact on our planet.
...and a few vertebrates
Throughout the facility you'll encounter a handful of vertebrates. Turtles, tortoises, frogs, birds and fish inhabit our Tropical Conservatory. At the Water's Edge you'll find an assortment of tropical fish.
Of course, people are also vertebrates, and we have plenty of them on staff to answer your questions about our animals.
Found an unknown insect in your house or outdoors, and would like to know what it is? Email us a photo at zookeepers@butterflies.org, and we might be able to help identify it!
DC Trip - Butterfly Pavilion
May 25, 2011 - May 29, 2011
Washington, D.C.
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the Butterfly Pavilion.
Being in college does have its perks. Because of my involvement in my research lab and doing psychology research, I was able to present my poster in DC! I did a little sight-seeing while I was there for the APS convention.
This was by-far one of my favorite places to to tour! So, get this - you pay about $6 to walk into a chamber housing a large flower garden. In this chamber, butterflies are zipping about, flying around the garden (and anyone who chooses to pay $6 to enter the chamber). A fantastic experience!

Marijuana facility planned for warehouse -- next to rehab clinic
For 70 years, Gracepoint has helped those struggling with mental illness and substance abuse get their lives back.
The organization offers dozens of services, including housing for those in recovery. However, a few months ago, a notice was posted on the fence of the empty warehouse next door. The sign revealed their new neighbor would be a facility where medical marijuana is held and processed.
