Maya Devi Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple situated at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini, Nepal. It is the main temple at Lumbini, a site traditionally considered the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The temple stands adjacent to a sacred pool (known as Puskarni) and a sacred garden. The archaeological remains at the site were previously dated to the third-century BCE brick buildings constructed by Ashoka the Great.A sixth-century BCE timber shrine was discovered in 2013.

Lumbinī is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi district of Nepal.It is the place where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Gautam Buddha. Lumbini has a number of temples, including the Mayadevi temple, and others. Also located here is the Puskarini or Holy Pond where the Buddha's mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he, too, had his first bath, as well as the remains of Kapilavastu palace.

Lumbini is the birthplace of Sidhartha Gautam Budha which is about 306 km west of Kathmandu. Budha was born n 563 BC. King Asoka installed a pillar in Lumbini as sign of Budha's birthplace.
At present Lumibini is covered with different monasteries, stupas, peace pagoda, meditation center build by various governments and institutes. Mayadevi temple Lumbini, the exact birthplace of Buddha
Mayadevi temple in Lumbini houses the marker stone kept right after the birth of Buddha. Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha lies 320 km southwest of Kathmandu, Nepal. Lumbini was a garden between two ancient kingdoms of Kwaliyar (Devdaha) and Kapilavastu. This is where Buddha was born in 623 BC. As mentioned in the scriptures, there was Puskarini pond where Buddha and his mother Mayadevi took bath after the birth. The exact place of birth was marked by a stone which was enshrined and formed as a monastery in the later ages. Most significantly Emperor Ashoka visited the site in 249 BC and erected a column with inscription.
Many things were covered in dust with time and revival of Lumbini started only from 1896 after the Ashoka pillar was rediscovered. Meticulous excavation then after unearthed remains of the Buddhist monasteries and stupas from the 3rd century BC to the 15th century AD, Puskarini pond and the marker stone. Recently (Dec 2014) a timber shrine dating back to 6th century has been discovered under the present Mayadevi temple.
Lumbini has been declared as UNESCO Heritage site since 1997. At present Lumbini is developed as an important pilgrimage and archeological site. The area of 2 X 6 km has been divided into three sections; the Sacred Garden, Monastic zone and tourist village.
The sacred garden has got archeological remains with marker stone enshrined in Mayadevi temple, restored sacred Puskarini pond and Bodhi tree. Monastic zone has got monasteries of Theravada and Mahayana sects and the tourist village is being developed for hotels, restaurants and tourist information centers.

Lumbini celebrates Maya Devi - the queen of Sakya clan who gave birth to Siddhartha Gautam whom we better know as Buddha. It was in a garden here at Lumbini - located somewhere between Kapilavastu and Devdaha i.e. her husband's home and her parent's home that Buddha was born.
The visual of Maya Devi standing holding a branch of a tree and Buddha taking his first 7 steps soon after he is born is all over Lumbini. It is there in the ancient Maya Devi Temple and it is replicated in each of the new temples built to celebrate that great moment in history.
However, the devotion is what you see when you see these devotees chanting and praying. When you see them lighting thousands of lamps around the sacred pond where Maya Devi took bath, you wonder what they feel to stand at the same spot where Buddha was born.
It was an exhilarating experience to sit there and hear the music of chants and see the devotees from different countries maintain their groups and yet somehow merge in the common devotion for Buddha.
