What could be better than backcountry skiing on a calm and beautiful day in the forests of Colorado?
Backcountry skiing, unlike Downhill or Alpine skiing at a resort, is very aerobic (healthy) and costs very little!

Windsor Lake Hike 2013 Leadville Colorado Grand West Village Resort
In this video, Grand West Village Resort Manager Dave Horning takes viewers on another exciting alpine adventure. This time it's a 1.6 mile hike to Windsor Lake in the San Isabel National Forest, Mount Massive Wilderness Area high above Leadville, Colorado! The trailhead is just 25 minutes from Grand West at the west end of Turquoise Lake. The hike up to Windsor Lake takes about one and a half hours at a moderate pace. But be advised: although short, this trail is very steep and much more difficult than the distance implies. Expect snowfields late in the season. So lace up your hiking boots and come along as Dave, along with his wife Jane, take you up to a beautiful alpine lake!
Nestled in a scenic granite basin on the eastern flank of the Continental Divide, Windsor Lake is a popular destination for fishermen and hikers looking for a nice half day hike in the Leadville area. From Leadville, follow signs to Turquoise Lake. To reach the trailhead, drive 3 miles on the Hagerman Pass Road (Forest Service Road 105) and park in the lot to the north of the road.
This adventure is just another great outdoor activity to enjoy when you stay with us at Grand West Village Resort. Located just outside of Leadville, nestled among lodge pole pines on a plateau overlooking the Arkansas River Valley and surrounded by Colorado's highest peaks, Grand West Village Resort offers a classic Rocky Mountain Vacation experience. 800-691-3999
Vicksburg Colorado Historical Town or Ghost Town
YEPWELP! Please take a trip with me into history. Vicksburg is a small piece of Colorado gold mining history. Gold prospecting in Colorado by a just a few miners happen to stumble upon an abundance of minerals including Colorado GOLD in Clear Creek Canyon. This was the first step in now what is the astonishing and historical town or ghost town of Vicksburg. Surrounded by the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains and Clear Creek it is a small breathtaking view of Colorado gold mining history. I was truly amazed by the amount of passion, dedication and craftsmanship it took to create the historical town of Vicksburg. At its peak it was the 2nd largest town and mining camp located in Clear Creek Canyon. I highly recommend you take a trip to personally feel the history and take a step back in time to experience what Vicksburg truly has to offer.
Thank you so much to the Clear Creek Historical Society of Chaffee County, the passionate miners and state of Colorado to provide us with the opportunity to view this amazing place!

Summitville Mine Disaster : The Making of a Superfund Site & The Preemption of Democracy
The Summitville Mine Disaster in the Colorado San Juan Mountains was the result of cyanide heap leach gold mining. It devastated downstream neighbors, killing off 17 miles of the Alamosa River. Dr. Colin Henderson led neighbors' efforts to ban cyanide mining, working through every feasible channel from state to local levels. After the mining company abandoned the mine and it became a superfund site, a neighbor remarked, They got the gold and we got the shaft.
Bonita Mines on Superfund List
It’s official: the Bonita Mining District north of Silverton is now listed on the Superfund program’s National Priority Clean-Up List. The district includes at least 48 mines in the area, including the Gold King Mine, where contractors working for the Environmental Protection Agency accidentally caused the release of three million gallons of wastewater into the Animas River.

Mineral Belt Trail Chad's Shelter Leadville Today
The Mineral Belt Trail (MBT) is a 11.6 mile non-motorized trail which loops around Leadville, Colorado and meanders through the historic mining district. In this video, the Mineral Belt Trail installs the fourth, and final, shelter in the southwest quadrant of the trail, between mile marker 10 and 11, thanks to some help from Lake County Public Works.
This last structure - Chad’s Shelter - has been named in honor of Chad Smith, son of Dick and Charlene Smith. He would have carried on the fifth generation of the Smith Lumber business, which started in Leadville in 1900. Sadly, Chad Smith passed away in 2013; Smith Lumber closed its doors a little more than a year later, in July 2014.

Up with Aron Ralston in Eagle's Nest
I'm high up in the Gore Range with America's most inspiring left-handed climber Aron Ralston. We have a fantastic view of dawn through the silvery underleaves of the dewy underbrush as we breathe in the crisp mountain air.
Eagle's Nest Wilderness area, where we are climbing now, is the topic of conversation as we round out 11,000' around 7 am. Much of this wilderness conservation area is front and center of the policy debates going on right now. The pristine area we are in now is protected but only 2% of Colorado's public lands are protected from private development.
What is being look at now is not just Colorado's wilderness gemstones, but its mid-elevation lands between 9-10,000' that are now being looked at by conservationists, recreationalists and drilling companies alike. Who gets rights to what? Which places are too special to be touched? Where do we draw the line?
Perhaps it is okay to have places to go ATV-riding and snowmobiling, but let's leave the wildlife to reign supreme in other pristine landscapes. Places where man is just a visitor, Ralston explains, leaving no mark, only footprints, even if that.
Right now that debate is heating up with oil and gas drilling exploding all over the state with over 10,000 new wells up in last 10 years. Aron has been very active in the wilderness protection project in Colorado, if you appreciate these lands yourself, please get involved!

2004 - Paris Mill
Once an important site for processing precious metals from mines in Park County’s Buckskin Gulch, the Paris Mill is now abandoned, despite the fact that the nearby Sweet Home Mine is currently producing rhodochrosite, a rose- colored gemstone and the official Colorado state mineral.
Subject of many an artist’s brush, the now languishing Paris Mill was constructed in 1894 at an elevation of 11,003 feet. The mill was connected to the mine with a 1,750 foot aerial tramway. The mill’s original steam engine drove a leather-belt drive shaft to power equipment throughout the mill; it was converted to a steam-electric operation after the turn of the century. In its prime, the Paris Mill was considered one of the richest strikes in the Alma District, producing gold, silver, and lead for decades. Time and unstable metal prices finally forced the closure of the mine and mill in 1951. The building is a Local Landmark of Park County and considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. One of the unique aspects of the mill is that is still retains much of its original machinery including three different stamps, which were used for crushing and grinding ore and are representative of several generations and methodologies.
At the instigation of CPI, representatives of the out-of-state owner came to Colorado in the summer of 2004 to talk with supporters about their vision for the site. The owner brought a sampling of the extensive archive connected to the Paris Mine and Mill and agreed to allow Park County to document the entire archive. Shortly after the meeting, the owner paid to have the mill sealed to protect the interior from the elements. An on-site security system was installed.
Park County completed local landmark designation for the site and recently purchased the Mill and surrounding 16 acres, with immediate plans to stabilize and document the building towards the long term goal of opening Paris Mill to the public. The county has performed over $300,000 in voluntary site cleanup and funded the preservation of a Historic Structure Assessment on the property. In the last few years the county has performed roof repairs, hosted two community work days, nominated the building to the National Register of Historic Places, and temporarily stabilized a number of structural issues. Public comment on the future use of the Paris Mill has been solicited and the overwhelming response has been to preserve the mill and open it for public tours.
The current rehabilitation project will begin in 2014 thanks to funds from the State Historical Fund, National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety. This first phase will focus on repairing structural and roof issues in the mill’s cyanidation and gold precipitation wings. The South Park National Heritage Area is funding the master plan.
